Is Your Cough Lingering Too Long? When to Worry About Lung Cancer
This Lung Cancer Day, let's raise awareness and encourage timely action because every breath matters As Lung Cancer Day draws attention to one of the world's deadliest cancers, it's time we pay closer attention to one of its most overlooked symptoms, a persistent cough. While most coughs resolve within a few weeks, a lingering cough, especially one lasting more than eight weeks, could be an early warning sign of lung cancer. Dr. Chandragouda Dodagoudar, Director, Medical Oncology, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, shares all you need to know: Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer globally. Chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, or respiratory infections that don't go away or keep recurring may be highly related to underlying lung cancer. Today, Delhi's air quality is equivalent to smoking, even for non-smokers. Worryingly, there has been a rise in lung cancer cases among individuals who have never smoked, simply due to prolonged exposure to air pollution. Unexplained weight loss or fatigue: Cancer can disrupt your metabolism, leading to significant weight loss and low energy levels. Many people mistakenly attribute these symptoms to pollution, smoking, or aging. But when a cough doesn't go away, it's your body asking for attention. Early signs like a persistent cough can be crucial for early detection. Low-dose CT scans in high-risk individuals over 50 can significantly improve survival rates. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness, lung cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. This Lung Cancer Day, let's raise awareness and encourage timely action because every breath matters. Don't ignore a cough that lingers. Listen to your body. Early action can make all the difference and save lives. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 13:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
