Trichy: The conventional rakes of Ernakulam–Velankanni-Ernakulam Express (train number 16361/16362) will be converted into LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coaches from July 7 to improve safety and comfort of passengers, Southern Railway, Trichy division has said.
Subsequently, the train's coach composition will be - one AC 2-tier, three AC 3-tier, eight sleeper class, four general second class, one second class coach and one luggage-cum-brake van. The operation of train number 76819 Karaikal-Trichy DEMU has also been changed. Instead of Karaikal, it will start from Tiruvarur junction at 4.15pm between July 2 and July 7, due to scheduled maintenance work.

KOCHI: Railway passengers' associations have come out against the hike in the fares of long-distance trains, including AC coaches. While welcoming the Railways' decision to not increase the fares of ordinary services and season tickets, they pointed out that the fervour the Railways shows in increasing the fares should also reflect in bettering the facilities that make train journey seamless. Friends on Rails has registered its strong protests against the measures taken by the Railways to increase revenue by cutting down on the number of general compartments. 'These compartments have been restricted to one section in some trains. There has been a reduction in the number of de-reserved bogies since the introduction of LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coaches,' said a Friends on Rails representative. Women passengers have pointed out the insufficient number of ladies' compartments. 'From two compartments in some passenger and express trains, it has been reduced to one. And that too with the size of the coaches having gone down from full to half,' said Satidevi R, who works at a government office in Tripunithura. Friends on Rails also highlighted the tactic of delaying trains that arrive on time. 'They halt a train that is running on time to allow the passage of a train that is late by two or more hours. Then there is the trick of halting trains in the outer areas of stations. Such waiting time extend to more than 30 minutes,' said another passenger.

Chandigarh: In a major safety upgrade, the Indian Railways has announced that all the 17 trains originating from Chandigarh Railway Station will be equipped with Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, replacing the older and less safe ICF (Integral Coach Factory) models. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The transition will be completed in five phases, with the first three trains to be upgraded in July, and the remaining two by December, 2025. Currently, 12 of the 17 trains operating from Chandigarh already run with LHB coaches. The remaining five will be upgraded in a phased manner to enhance passenger safety and comfort. Officials said that the shift to LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coaches was prompted by safety concerns with ICF coaches, which are a type of passenger coach used by Indian Railways. The LHB coaches are known for their enhanced safety features, improved ride quality, and higher speed potential compared to older ICF coaches. They are designed with anti-climbing features, axle-mounted disc brakes, and an anti-telescopic structure to minimise damage in case of collisions. These coaches also provide a smoother and quieter ride with more comfortable seating. LHB coaches, manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, are based on German technology and are considered safer and more efficient than their ICF counterparts. "Passenger safety is a top priority, and replacing ICF coaches is a crucial step toward ensuring safer travel. These LHB coaches are also equipped with better suspension systems, improved braking, and modern interiors," a senior railway official said. Railway officials reiterated that the move is aimed at ensuring passenger safety, operational efficiency, and a modern travel experience for commuters from Chandigarh.
