Mihambo wins in first long jump take off zone trial

Yahoo09-02-2025
German great Malaika Mihambo won a first long jump competition with a take-off zone rather than the traditional board at an indoor meet on Sunday.
Twice world champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Mihambo won with 6.87 metres from Dutch athlete Pauline Hondema who recorded 6.68m.
The competition at the ISTAF Indoors meet in Dusseldorf saw a trial of a 40 centimetres take off zone and jumps measured with the help of cameras from the actual take off point.
The ruling body World Athletics hopes to make the discipline more exciting this way by minimizing the number of foul jumps compared to the traditional system with a 20cm board where jumps were measured from the end of the board.
Some athletes have voiced criticism, saying that being able to hit the board precisely is an important part of the discipline. But Mihambo welcomed the idea after the competition, just as she had also been open for it beforehand.
"I found it interesting but some improvement is needed. There were a few problems with the measurement," Mihambo told broadcasters ARD.
"But overall the idea is quite nice to have the full zone because a full foot doesn't fit on the (traditional) board. I found it quite exciting."
Mihambo had soared a world lead 7.07m at another German meet in Karlsruhe on Friday.

Update On Tottenham Hotspur In Their Pursuit Of This Bayern Munich Talent: Good Choice For Frank?

In a recent post on X, journalist Sebastien Vidal offered an update on Tottenham Hotspur and their pursuit of Bayern Munich talent Joao Palhinha. It has been claimed that Spurs are ready to launch a £45m bid to land the Portugal international in this summer transfer period. Palhinha's Decent Form In The Bundesliga The 30-year-old proved his worth at times for Bayern in the previous campaign, but was sidelined for a lot of games for them because of injury. Palhinha played in 25 matches for the Munich outfit last season in all competitions. Palhinha gave a good account of himself in the middle of the park as he made 20 tackles, 13 blocks and 4 interceptions in the Bundesliga. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from midfield, based on his pass completion rate of 92.4% in the German top flight (stats via Palhinha's current contract at the Munich club will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, Tottenham would have no choice but to meet Bayern's demands for their prized asset in this transfer period. (Photo by) Is Palhinha A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank? Palhinha is a tough-tackling midfielder who can make some timely interceptions for his team inside his half when he is playing well on the pitch. He usually clears his lines when required and is an accurate passer of the ball from midfield. Standing at 1.90m, the Portuguese sensation is a strong presence in the air. He is already quite familiar with the Premier League from his time at Fulham and won't take much time to adjust to life at Tottenham. Palhinha would inject more bite and steel into Spurs head coach Thomas Frank's midfield department. He is capable of earning a regular first-team spot at the North London club next season. At 30, Palhinha has still got plenty of football left in him to play at a high level. Therefore, Tottenham would do well to lure him back to English football this summer. Furthermore, Palhinha might even help Spurs challenge across all fronts in the coming seasons. With all things considered, it makes sense for Frank to try everything in his power to snap him up before the end of this transfer period.

Manchester United Are Weighing Up A Move For This Bundesliga Forward: Good Option For Amorim?

In a recent report, Manchester Evening News stated that Manchester United are weighing up a move for Red Bull Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko. It has been claimed that the Red Devils could move in for the Slovenian talent in this summer transfer window. Sesko's Impressive Form In German Football Sesko enjoyed a good run of form at the German club recently as he was responsible for putting in a handful of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. The Slovenia international scored 21 times and picked up six assists in 45 matches for RB Leipzig last season across all competitions. The 22-year-old was a real menace in the final third as he averaged 2.5 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He kept 43.9% of his attempts on target. However, Sesko needs to work on improving his link-up play up top based on his pass completion rate of 67.6% in the English top tier (stats via His current contract at the Red Bull Arena will expire in the summer of 2029. Thus, Man United would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting Sesko this off-season. Sesko excels at creating a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet. The Slovenian talent can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals up top. Standing at 1.95m, Sesko can use his strong frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his team but needs to work on improving his ball distribution in the opponent's half if he wants to succeed in the Premier League. At 22, the future looks quite promising for Sesko. Therefore, Amorim would be wise to get a deal done for him soon as he would be a great option for the Red Devils to consider in the long run.

Canada Names National Development Team Roster For Summer Series

For the second straight summer, Hockey Canada will lean on youth at the August 13-16 Summer Series against USA with their national development team roster. Canada named a 23-player roster for the three-game series against USA's Collegiate Select roster including 12 members of their national development team roster from last season that won silver at the 2024 Women's Euro Hockey Tour's Six Nations tournament. 'We are excited to return to the international stage with a strong group of athletes who bring both experience and fresh energy to our development team,' said national development team head coach Alison Domenico. 'It is an honour to be back behind the bench, and our staff is eager to continue guiding our talented athletes as they take the next steps in their growth within our program.' Among the returnees to their roster are captain Jocelyn Amos, Tova Henderson, Jordan Baxter, Avi Adam, Claire Murdoch, Hailey MacLeod, Ava Murphy, Ashley Messier, Emma Pais, Madeline Palumbo, Sarah Paul, Sara Swiderski, and Emma Venusio. Adding to their national team experience are a large group of U-18 national team players including Mackenze Alexander, Eloise Caron, Hannah Clark, Piper Grober, Makayla Watson, and Alyssa Regalado, who all played in the NCAA last season. Canada also named five players who will make their NCAA debuts this season including goaltender Rhyah Stewart, and forwards Maxine Cimeroni, Sienna D'Alessandro, Sara Manness, and Stryker Zablocki. Notably absent from their 2025 roster is standout Caitlin Kraemer. The omission likely means Kraemer is either recovering from injury, or will be part of Canada's senior national team centralizations. Eve Gascon was also not named to their roster again as she'll be with the senior national team. Alex Law was the only other player not returning, but she struggled last season with Boston University. From last year's national development team that played in the Women's Euro Hockey Tour, seven players were selected in the 2025 PWHL Draft, including first-round picks Nicole Gosling, Kendall Cooper, and Jenna Buglioni, and second-round picks Anne Cherkowski and Hannah Murphy. Other PWHL picks from Canada's national development team were Sarah Wozniewicz and Maya Labad.
