Puri teen set on fire dies at AIIMS-Delhi, police rule out anybody's involvement in case

Bhubaneswar, Aug 2 (PTI) The 15-year-old girl who was allegedly set on fire by three unidentified miscreants in Odisha's Puri district a fortnight ago succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Delhi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Saturday.
She was allegedly intercepted and abducted by the three persons who poured an inflammable substance and set her ablaze, her mother stated in an FIR at Balanga police station.
She had sustained over 70 per cent burn injuries. She was rushed to Pipili community health centre on July 19. Later in the day, she was shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar and airlifted to AIIMS-Delhi the next day, where she underwent at least two surgeries and skin grafting.
Odisha Police, in the presence of a magistrate, had recorded her statement on Friday.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in the state capital in the wake of the girl's death.
Dukhisshyam Senapati, a villager who first saw the burning girl and doused the fire on her clothes, quoting the victim had said that three people had abducted her and set her on fire after pouring inflammable substance on her.
However, Odisha Police, after a 15-day-long investigation claimed that no other person was involved in the case.
'Deeply saddened by the passing of the Balanga incident victim. Despite the best efforts of doctors at AIIMS-Delhi, her life couldn't be saved. May her soul attain sadgati and God bless the family with immense strength in this difficult time,' Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati said in a X post.
Majhi in a post on X said: 'I am deeply shocked to hear the news of the death of the girl from Balanga area. Despite all the efforts of the government and the round-the-clock endeavours of specialist medical team at AIIMS Delhi, her life could not be saved. I pray for the eternal peace of the girl's soul and pray before God to grant strength to her family to bear this irreparable loss.' Odisha's Deputy Chief Ministers – KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida – also expressed condolences over the demise of the girl.
BJD president and leader of opposition Naveen Patnaik expressed his deep grief over the demise of the girl and conveyed his condolences to her family.
'Deeply saddened and anguished to know that the young girl set on fire in #Balanga area of #Puri District passed away while undergoing treatment in AIIMS. My condolences for the young girl and prayers are with the family members in the hour grief. May God give the family members strength to bear this irreparable loss,' Patnaik posted on X.
A delegation of BJD MPs led by its Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra said they were rushing to the AIIMS-Delhi.
BJD leader and former minister Sanjau Das Burma asked the state government to pay an ex gratia of Rs 2 crore to the victim's family and arrest of the three accused within seven days.
Talking to some Odia news channels in Delhi, the victim's father said the state government has done a lot for his daughter.
'I have lost my daughter. She has taken her life for mental agony. I appeal all not to politicise her death and pray for her eternal peace,' the father said to TV channels.
Odisha Police also expressed grief over the incident and claimed that the investigation into the girl burning incident has reached the last stage.
Police claimed that there was no other person involved in the incident and requested all not to make any sensational statement over the matter.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das also expressed his condolences and demanded the arrest of the three culprits involved in the burning of the girl within seven days. 'We will gherao the DGP office if the culprits are not held within seven days,' Das said.
Though 15 days have passed since the girl was set on fire, police have not been able to nab any of the culprits involved in the case, he said.
Das described August 2 as a 'Bad Saturday' as the girl was also set on fire on Saturday (July 19).
Meanwhile, sources said Puri police has deployed some personnel near the deceased girl's house and also at Balanga town.
Police have also tightened security in Bhubaneswar and sealed the roads in front of CM's residence.
The incident had sparked outrage as it came close on the heels of a 20-year-old college student resorting to self-immolation and succumbing to 95 per cent burn injuries in Balasore over a sexual harassment incident. PTI AAM RG AAM MNB

Bengaluru: Karnataka's ambitious e-governance drive, meant to fast-track services and curb corruption, is increasingly turning into a digital smokescreen for graft — especially in sub-registrar offices. Across the state, the phrase "server down" has morphed into a thinly veiled signal for citizens to grease palms to move even routine paperwork. What was pitched as a corruption-free system has, in many places, become a sophisticated tool to collect illegal payments. "E-governance in Karnataka was envisioned as a tool to ensure transparency and accountability in govt functioning, but its implementation has fallen short of expectations," said civic activist Vivek Menon. "While digital platforms were meant to reduce human intervention and curb corruption, loopholes in the system have instead given rise to new forms of graft." Menon said staff now manipulate digital records, delay online approvals, and exploit citizens unfamiliar with technology. "Further, being gatekeepers for approvals, officials cite delays and impose hurdles to extract money for clearances. The lack of robust auditing and cyber-vigilance has allowed a tech-savvy few to misuse the system for personal gain," Menon said. Fading boundaries: Encroachments, sewage choke Amber Cheruvu
Hyderabad: The fate of Amber Cheruvu hangs in the balance due to encroachments and sewage. It wasn't too long ago that a man bought a plot of land for Rs 6 crore, only to realise he'd acquired a piece of the Amber Cheruvu. However, while the paperwork may now reflect where the lake begins, the ground reality tells another story, one where the lakebed continues to vanish under a steady stream of debris and unchecked construction, as builders push boundaries, quite literally. The construction over the years has also led to a functional road between the water body, leading to its division into two lakes — Amber Cheruvu and Pragati Nagar Lake. "A sewage treatment plant (STP) project launched two years ago came to a halt after nearby colonies resisted pipeline work. As a result, raw sewage continues to gush into the water body, turning it into a toxic cesspool. You can barely stand near it," said Sandeep Raj, a resident of the area. The extent of the combined twin lake boundary is currently at 162 acres. In 2024, a report on the condition of 13 lakes across different locations of the city was submitted by the two-member committee of advocate commissioners to the high court. Amber Cheruvu was one of them. The report revealed extensive encroachments on the FTL and the buffer zone, along with various sewage inlets polluting the lakes. The committee, in its report, also shared details of the fencing around the lakes, walking tracks, CCTV cameras, and sewerage treatment. "There are five encroachments on the FTL and 105 in the buffer zone. Fencing is not completed even on the main roadside, Ring Bund, though completed, but the walking track is not laid. The lake is seen dumped with garbage and sewage water, and the lake has a pungent odour and foul smell," the report read. Fixing FTL is not the end; making sure that it is not encroached again is important," said Lubna Sarwath, an environmentalist. Adding to the danger is a narrow strip of road that separates the two lakes. With no barricades on either side, it remains exposed and unsafe, particularly during rains when the lakes swell and visibility drops. Locals worry it's only a matter of time before an accident occurs. Over the years, the twin lakes have caught the attention of officials more than once. But for the people living around them, not much has changed. "Residents say they are grappling with daily health and safety concerns, from clouds of mosquitoes to the overpowering smell that refuses to go away. The problem becomes serious during the monsoon as it floods our cellar. Mosquitoes swarm into the house by 6 pm, and we've even had snakes enter the compound," said Sharon D, a 25-year-old resident of the area. "We have fixed its FTL and even submitted all the information with the report last year, but we need to check if fresh encroachments have come up," said an official from HMDA.

Money laundering: ED seizes 17crore shares, MFs; 1 held
New Delhi: In the Axis Mutual Fund money laundering case, the Enforcement Directorate on Sunday said it has seized Rs 17.4 crore of shares and mutual funds and arrested its then fund manager Viresh Joshi. A special court has remanded Joshi to ED custody till Aug 8. The proceeds of crime identified by the agency so far are around Rs 200 crore, and likely to further go up substantially. "The proceeds of the fraud were laundered through multiple shell entities and bank accounts beneficially owned by the accused persons/entities and their family members, which is under investigation," ED said. The current searches at the Axis Mutual Fund — which is one of the country's largest MF with more than Rs 3 lakh crore of assets under management and having a 1.3 crore investors' folio count under its various schemes (as of March 2025) — has raised serious concerns on the funds' safety of lakhs of investors. ED said searches are part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal profits made by certain entities/persons by indulging in front-running trade activities in scrips traded by Axis Mutual Fund during 2018 to 2021. The probe has also revealed that "the accused had utilised a terminal in Dubai to punch the front running trade orders through mule trading accounts obtained from various brokers". In addition to accused Joshi, investigation has revealed that many other traders/brokers had also misused the advance inputs on Axis Mutual Fund trades and indulged in front running to generate illicit trade profits, which is nothing but proceeds of crime, ED said.
