South Korean electronics giant Samsung is closely monitoring the Trump administration's ongoing trade negotiations and is prepared to supply products to the US market from multiple manufacturing locations, including India, depending on the outcomes, a senior company official said on Wednesday.Admitting that "very high" uncertainty in America necessitated its state of preparedness for various scenarios, Samsung asserted that it has a well-strategised diversification plan in place and would respond with flexibility."The uncertainty in the US is currently very high, and because of that, we have been preparing against a number of different scenarios. We are ready to produce for the US from multiple factories, including India," Samsung COO MX division - Won-Joon Choi told reporters.The company, he said, has braced for different scenarios, and is prepared when it comes to diversification of factories for the product it will ship to the US."One of the things that we have prepared was to have diversification of our factories for the product we will ship to the US. Depending on the final decision by the Trump administration, we have already established a system in which we can shift from one to another to respond to the final decision more flexibly," Choi said.The company will shift manufacturing to its India-based production facility for shipment to the US market from its other global locations if the tariffs in India is lower, a move to bring stability in business and price, Choi said.The South Korean Chaebol -- which operates several factories around the globe in countries like China, Vietnam, and India, among others -- is ready for diversification of its production for its shipment to the US, its biggest market.However, this will depend on the final decision by the Trump administration under its new policy, which has country-specific tariffs, he pointed out.According to Choi, the situation in the US is quite tenable, and uncertainty is very high, and Samsung was preparing against such scenarios.In 2024, America Zone contributed 39 per cent of Samsung's sales, followed by Europe, Asia, Africa, China and South Korea, according to marketscreener data.Samsung has a large production facility in Vietnam, which is its main production base for smartphones.The Trump administration has announced a 20 per cent tariff on Vietnam exports to the US under the new trade deal announced on July 3.India, where Samsung has a large production facility for smartphones and other products, is seen as an alternative to Vietnam.The new Trump administration is reshaping the US trade policy and working on reciprocity. It is using tariffs to address trade imbalances and promote domestic production.Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said the higher rates are set to take effect on August 1, 2025.It has decided to impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from South Korea and Japan.Several countries, including India, are engaged in negotiations of trade pacts with the US government.Choi said Samsung had such scenario planning to make sure that "we can secure our business stability and price stability for the consumers as well".When asked whether the recent ban by China on the export of rare earth material will impact the global production of Samsung, Choi said: "For the near term, there have been no production disruptions so far".However, without mentioning the name of the country, he said Samsung has long been managing its global supply chain and is trying to diversify it."So, even for the rare earth metals, we have been trying to source from different companies, different countries, although I am not able to name names, but we have long been seeking diversification," he said.Samsung on Thursday here launched its latest Fold 7, Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE in its latest Galaxy Z series of premium foldable smartphones."In the smartphone market, especially in the premium market, we will continue to enhance the foldable form factor as it represents one of the most important form factors for us in the premium market, and we will continue to develop it," he pointed out.Over the use of Artificial Intelligence in phone systems, Choi said he believes that "we are very much nearing the tipping point".Samsung has partnered with Google and has integrated its Gemini AI into its devices.According to Choi, the basic feature of Galaxy AI would not be paid."Our policy is that for the basic AI features, they will remain free or remain at no additional cost. Now, having said that, about the premium AI experience that we are developing, both on our own and also in partnership with other companies, we are still in discussion about our policy about the premium AI experience," he said.Samsung is having Galaxy AI and Gemini on its smartphones. It gives users freedom to opt for any one of them. It is also open to add more such AI systems on its platform, Choi added."We are open to using any other competitive or most competitive agents. We are willing to integrate those into our Galaxy ecosystem," he said.

He also warned that any retaliatory tariff from Mexico would result in a proportional increase above the 30 per cent base rate. In a parallel letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump criticised the EU's tariff and non-tariff barriers, calling the trade relationship 'far from reciprocal'. He justified the 30 per cent rate as being 'far less than what is needed' to correct the trade imbalance with the EU. President Trump indicated that the new tariffs would not apply to goods produced within the US by Mexican and EU firms. He emphasised that his administration would streamline the approval process for such investments, promising quick, professional, and routine clearances—potentially within just a few weeks—to encourage domestic manufacturing. The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs is "inevitable", according to founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who said AI will become part of routine business processes sooner rather than later. He said AI will eventually perform most tasks currently done by humans, and stressed the need to build core products instead. Sharma also outlined a broader vision for the company — to move beyond its fintech roots and become an AI-first firm, according to an ET report. Although AI will automate several human functions, Sharma said it will also create fresh roles in the workforce. The remarks come at a time when Paytm's parent, One97 Communications, is undergoing job cuts. ET reported last month that the company had laid off an unspecified number of employees. The overall sales team headcount dropped by about 3,500 in the March 2024 quarter, taking the total to 36,521. This decline was largely linked to the Reserve Bank of India's restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank operations. In the March quarter, Paytm posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 540 crore, compared with Rs 550 crore in the year-ago period. In June, Paytm stood third in the UPI rankings with 1.27 billion transactions worth Rs 1.34 lakh crore — accounting for 6.9% of total volume and 5.6% of value. PhonePe remained in the lead with 8.55 billion transactions valued at Rs 11.99 lakh crore. As part of its AI initiatives, Sharma announced a new passbook feature that would use Paytm's data to generate a rap song summarising monthly expenses. Though no launch date has been shared, Sharma said it would be made available to users soon. Paytm had earlier partnered with US-based AI startup Perplexity to introduce AI-powered search capabilities in its app.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday intensified the tariff trade war even further by threatening to impose a 30 per cent tariff on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting on August 1. In an escalation of the trade war that has angered US allies and rattled investors, Trump announced the latest tariffs in separate letters to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on Truth Social. Both the EU and Mexico responded by calling the tariffs unfair and disruptive while pledging to continue to negotiate with the US for a broader trade deal before the August deadline. According to an AFP report, French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday condemned Trump's threat to impose 30 per cent tariffs on the European Union, calling on the bloc to "resolutely defend European interests". Expressing France's "very strong disapproval" of the announcement, Macron called on the bloc to "step up the preparation of credible countermeasures by mobilising all instruments at its disposal" if the two sides failed to reach agreement by August 1. "France fully supports the European Commission in the negotiation that will intensify to reach a mutually acceptable agreement by August 1, so that it reflects the respect that trade partners such as the European Union and the United States owe each other," he wrote on social media. The European Union "remains firm, united and ready to protect (its) interests". 'Tariffs are taxes. They fuel inflation, create uncertainty and hinder economic growth. We will continue to build strong trade partnerships worldwide,' European Council President Antonio Costa said. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the tariffs unjustified. "Economic openness and trade create prosperity. Unjustified tariffs destroy it. That is why we support and will support the Commission in its negotiations to reach an agreement with the US before August 1," he said. Germany's economy minister called for pragmaticism in European Union tariff negotiations with the United States. "The EU now must, in the time that remains, negotiate in a pragmatic manner a solution with the United States," Germany's economy minister Katherina Reiche said in a statement. "A pragmatic outcome to these negotiations must be reached quickly," she said. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU will take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required. "The EU has consistently prioritised a negotiated solution with the US, reflecting our commitment to dialogue, stability, and a constructive transatlantic partnership. 'We remain ready to continue working towards an agreement by August 1. At the same time, we will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required,' she said. Mexico slammed Trump's latest threat of 30 per cent tariffs on Saturday as an "unfair deal," according to a government statement. Mexico was informed of the new duties – which Trump said would come into effect by August 1 – during talks in the United States on Friday, an AFP report said. "We mentioned at the table that it was an unfair deal and that we did not agree," the Mexican economy and foreign ministries said in a joint statement. Mexico is already in negotiations seeking an alternative to tariffs that would protect businesses and jobs on both sides of the border, the ministries added, saying they hope to avoid the duties. Mexico is one of the countries most vulnerable to the Republican leader's tariffs, with 80 per cent of its exports destined for the United States, its largest trading partner, the report added.
