TCS' new deployment policy: Minimum billing days set, bench period slashed to 35 days — how will it impact employees?

Mint17-06-2025

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT company, has launched a new associate deployment policy. The policy comes with an updated mandate that employees work for a minimum of 225 business days in the last one-year period with a reduced bench period, reported the Times of India on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.
'At any given point in time, associates must be allocated for a minimum period of 225 business days in the last 12 months,' the report said, citing official policy documents from TCS.
The report also mentioned that TCS' Global Head, Chandrasekaran Ramkumar, laid out the new policy, which became effective on 12 June 2025.
According to the report, TCS seeks to monitor and evaluate employee performance through the new deployment policy. The company is restricting the time that each individual employee gets to foster a proactive approach to people allocation.
Through this policy, the company also aims to ensure that both the organisational and the individual goals are met, as per the news report.
The documents reviewed by the news portal showed that if an employee fails to work for a minimum period of 225 business days in the last 12 months and has longer unallocated periods, or more than 35 business days a year, this will impact the individual's compensation, career growth, avenues of overseas deployment in future, and employment in TCS.
'Long periods of remaining unallocated shall adversely impact associate compensation, career growth, avenues of overseas deployment in future, and continuity of employment with the organisation,' reported the news portal, citing the company documents.
If an employee is 'unallocated' to a task, the company mandates that the individual participate in upskilling programmes through platforms such as iEvolve, Fresco Play, VLS, and LinkedIn.
These employees also have a 'primary responsibility' of engaging with their units to seek allocation and taking initiative to pursue opportunities provided by TCS.
'In the event an associate is unallocated, it is the primary responsibility of the associate to proactively engage with the Unit/Regional RMG for seeking allocation and take initiative towards pursuing suitable opportunities provided by the organisation,' as per the documents, cited in the report.
The IT major has also mandated the employees' physical presence in the office premises or work-from-office (WFO), which makes WFO exceptions and flexible work arrangements inapplicable.
'However, associates may request short-term flexible work options for personal emergencies in exceptional circumstances, subject to organisational policies and prior approval from the RMG,' the company was quoted as saying in the report.

Indian IT giants bet big on AI, rewire business DNAs for AI-driven future

Indian IT majors are aggressively repositioning themselves as AI-native firms, focusing on high-margin applications and integration over high-risk, capital-intensive foundational research. A deep dive into the FY25 annual reports from the industry behemoths --- TCS , Infosys , Wipro, and Tech Mahindra -- indicates that in the global AI race, India's tech titans are not competing to invent foundational AI, they are positioning themselves to become premier integrators of it. The shift from general digital transformation to a specific AI focus is captured in the very titles of their annual reports. TCS frames its strategy within "The Perpetually Adaptive Enterprise," driven by a stated "AI-First approach." Infosys takes an even more direct path with its theme, "AI Your Enterprise," while Wipro focuses on its role as an enabler in "Helping Clients Build AI-Powered Future-Ready Businesses." Tech Mahindra joins this chorus with "AI Delivered Right." The IT firms are laying a greater focus on investing in human capital and upskilling their workforce. TCS has reported that over 1 lakh of its employees have acquired "higher order skills in AI/ML and GenAI, while Infosys has said that over 2.70 lakh of its employees are now "AI-Aware". Similar trends are observed in Wipro and Tech Mahindra as well. "The advent of AI with all its possibilities and potential creates another arc of uncertainty. As enterprises look at applying AI to every aspect of the business, some long-standing challenges will become imperative and self-evident to firms," Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani said. The need to modernise legacy systems and create a data architecture so that all the firm's data is consumable by AI, in a holistic manner, can no longer be put off, he said and urged enterprises to have an AI foundry and an AI factory to fuel innovation as well as scale. "Let us think of AI as a gifted child prodigy born and brought up in a library. It has access to all the knowledge in the world. It absorbs everything -- information, fact, fiction, truth, untruth, every pattern of human behaviour. Used well, it can create extraordinary value, particularly for businesses like TechM," Mahindra Group Chairman Anand G Mahindra said. The global AI market is projected to skyrocket, reaching an estimated $1.3 trillion over the next decade, according to industry estimates. The IT firms are not building their own large language models (LLMs) to compete with OpenAI or Google. Instead, they are deepening partnerships with hyperscalers (Microsoft, Google, AWS) and chipmakers (Nvidia) to access the latest models and infrastructure. Firms are creating dedicated spaces for co-innovation, TCS is establishing AI Centres of Excellence and AI Labs, while Infosys is building its AI foundry, allowing clients to experiment with AI in a controlled environment. Their bet is that as AI becomes a utility, the most enduring value will be captured not by those who create it, but by those who can expertly wire it into every corner of the enterprise. India's largest IT services company TCS believes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) is not just another tech cycle but a "civilisational shift" which will positively benefit every industry. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, who also chairs the TCS board, said the $30 billion IT services company will create a "large pool" of AI agents to work alongside humans and deliver solutions in a "human AI" model in the future. Wipro announced realignment within its Global Business Lines (GBLs) to better align with the changing needs of clients and to capitalise on opportunities in AI, cloud computing, and digital transformation. "This evolution of our business lines will enable us to further sharpen our focus towards client needs with consulting-led and AI-powered solutions. This realignment will allow us to serve our clients better, enabling us to deliver tailored, high-impact transformation," Wipro CEO and MD Srini Pallia had said. PTI

Filing ITR? Decoding TDS and TCS – who pays, who collects and key differences taxpayers must know

Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source ( ) are two separate provisions under the Indian tax regime, both intended to facilitate early and efficient tax collection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Though applied during transactions, they differ in usage, liable parties, and the nature of the payments they cover. For both individuals and businesses, understanding how TDS and TCS function is crucial for accurate income tax filing and better financial management. By ensuring that taxes are collected right at the point of income or sale, these mechanisms reduce evasion risks and help distribute tax liability throughout the year. What is TDS? TDS refers to the tax deducted by a person or entity at the time of making certain specified payments—such as salary, rent, interest, professional fees, or on property transactions. The party making the payment, called the 'deductor', is legally responsible for withholding tax at the applicable rate and remitting it to the government, as explained by an ET report. The recipient, known as the 'deductee', receives the net amount after deduction and can later claim credit for the TDS while filing their tax return. Example: Suppose you pay monthly rent of ₹90,000, which is above the ₹50,000 threshold. You're required to deduct 10 per cent TDS—₹9,000—and pay the balance ₹81,000 to your landlord. The ₹9,000 must then be deposited with the tax authorities. What is TCS? TCS, on the other hand, is a tax collected by the seller from the buyer when selling certain goods or services. This provision falls under Section 206C of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Here, the responsibility lies with the seller to collect tax on transactions and submit it to the government. Items covered under TCS include minerals, forest produce, scrap, liquor, certain high-value vehicles, foreign remittances, and overseas travel packages. Example: If you purchase an international travel package worth ₹14 lakh, and the threshold is ₹10 lakh, the travel agency must collect 20 per cent TCS on the ₹4 lakh excess—amounting to ₹80,000—which the buyer pays along with the package cost. Key difference: The core distinction lies in who is responsible for compliance. In TDS, the payer deducts tax before making a payment. In TCS, the seller collects tax while receiving payment. Despite this difference, both systems aim to strengthen compliance and secure tax revenues in advance. Not deducting or collecting these taxes properly can lead to penalties and interest liabilities. Particulars TDS TCS What is it? Tax deducted at source of income. Tax collected during sale of goods or services. Who levies it? Person or organisation making the payment. Person selling goods or services. When is it levied? At the time of making payment. At the time of sale. Levied under Section Section 192 Section 206C Due date 7th of next month. Seven days from the last day of the month. (Based on ET report) Why should one know the difference? Understanding how TDS works helps individuals and professionals keep track of taxes already deducted on income streams like salaries or consultancy payments—amounts that can be claimed as credit during income tax filing. Likewise, awareness of TCS ensures that tax paid on high-value purchases or foreign transactions isn't missed when claiming tax credits. Being familiar with both also helps prevent mismatches in Form 26AS, reduces the likelihood of receiving tax department notices, and contributes to smoother, more accurate income tax return filing.
