Nagpur prepares for solemn muharram observances
2
Nagpur: The city is preparing for Muharram with Ashura, 10th day of the Islamic month, set to be observed on Sunday by Shia and Sunni Muslims.
The Dawoodi Bohra community solemnly observed Ashura, the 10th day of Moharram, on Saturday to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS), the beloved grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), who laid down his life in the historic battle of Karbala upholding values of justice, truth and righteousness, as per their calendar.
Each group commemorates the day with distinct rituals, reflecting their spiritual tradition and devotion.
For the Shia community, Ashura is a time of mourning, honouring the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala. Naushad Ali Haidry, president of Shia Jamaat Trust, outlined a series of religious activities starting Saturday night (Shab e Ashura), continuing through Sunday. The observances begin with a majlis (religious gathering) at Maulana Akbar Ali's residence, followed by another at Haidry's home and Amale Shabe Ashoor at Jama Masjid Haidry.
On Sunday, Namaaz-e-Ashoor, Ziyarat-e-Ashoor, and Salam will be offered, culminating in a majlis at Madrasa Hussainia Hall in Mominpura.
A significant julus (religious procession) featuring matam will commence from Haidry Masjid, passing through Mominpura, Hansapuri, Rajwada, and Shukrwari Talao, before reaching Karbala at Imambada. A notable talwar-zanjeer matam kunji (sword and chain ritual) with condolences is scheduled around 2:30pm in front of Hafeez Bakery in Mominpura.

The procession will return in the evening, concluding at Madrasa Hussainia Hall with majlis-e-sham-e-ghareeban and nayaaz.
In Kamptee, 20km off Nagpur, thousands of Shia Muslims observe the day with mataam (self-flagellation) and majlis with Muharram processions, including taziya, proceeding from Bada Hussainabad to Kanhan River, upholding long-standing traditions.
Sunni Muslims, meanwhile, will observe Ashura on the 9th and 10th of Muharram with fasting, prayers, and acts of charity, emphasising spiritual reflection.
The Dawoodi Bohra community, following their unique calendar, already observed Ashura with online sermons and home-based prayers. Nagpur's diverse observances reflect the city's rich cultural and religious harmony, with authorities ensuring safety and smooth conduct of the processions.
For Bohras, this year, the spiritually uplifting sermons of His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin were delivered in Chennai and relayed live across 24 cities and towns across Madhya Pradesh and South India. Thousands of Dawoodi Bohras gathered in mosques and community centres to participate in the sermons and majlis, reflecting on the timeless values embodied by Imam Husain. The commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing for truth and compassion, values that continue to inspire the Dawoodi Bohra community, said Qaid Joharbhai, joint secretary of Shantinagar Bohra Jamaat.

The petition, filed by Kailash Chandra Nayak of Nuadihi village under Danagadi tehsil, sought intervention against construction being carried out by the state govt on forest land in Danagadi and Sukinda blocks without mandatory approval under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. The petitioner, represented by advocates Sankar Prasad Pani and Ashutosh Padhy, claimed these constructions are being carried out without any forest clearance from the Centre. A representation was submitted to the authorities on March 30, but no action has been taken so far, the petition claimed. Brics rejects EU's unilateral carbon border tax proposal
Brics Summit NEW DELHI: The Brics nations have rejected the European Union's proposed carbon border tax, or the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), calling it "unilateral, punitive and discriminatory protectionist measures", and said the move, being made "under the pretext of environmental concerns", would undermine their capacities to invest in just energy transitions and development priorities. India has long been opposed to such measures and even flagged its concerns during the recent free trade agreement talks with the EU. The concerns of the group of 11 nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, over such trade barriers got reflected prominently in the 'Leaders' Framework Declaration on Climate Finance' adopted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday. The CBAM, to be implemented from next year, is a tool to impose border tax on carbon-intensive goods, such as iron & steel, aluminium and cement, that enter the 27 EU nations. Since it will impose a tariff burden on developing countries and impact their trade prospects, large exporters of such goods, including India and China, have consistently been opposing it. Condemning CBAM, the Brics nations declared that such measures are "not in line with international law", and said they oppose "unilateral protectionist measures which deliberately disrupt the global supply and production chains and distort competition". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo Besides flagging the EU's trade barrier, the Brics nations expressed "serious concern" over pre-2020 mitigation gaps for developed countries and urged them to urgently bridge the gaps between what they promised and what they have achieved in terms of greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The group asked the rich nations to increase their 2030 climate action targets and achieve net-zero emissions significantly ahead of 2050, preferably by 2030. Referring to the critical issue of finance that is going to dominate the climate talks (CO) in Belem, Brazil, later this year, the Brics nations called upon developed countries to meet their earlier goal of jointly mobilising $100 billion per year through 2025 to address the needs of developing countries, and achieve the finance goal of $300 billion per year by 2035. "We note that substantial gaps remain in fulfilling the financing needs identified by developing countries," the declaration said. The developed countries were also urged to increase their collective provision of climate finance for adaptation, doubling the amount from 2019 levels by 2025 at the least.

DMK functionaries gherao minister in party event, refuse to allow him
Pudukottai: Tension prevailed for a while in the DMK's booth level agents (BLA) meeting in Pudukottai on Tuesday as party functionaries and cadres gheraoed DMK's principal secretary K N Nehru and refused to let him in. They demanded changes in the party's urban district unit leadership. In a similar event at a different location, functionaries expressed their dissatisfaction over the district-level leaders constantly sidelining the backward class welfare minister Siva V Meyyanathan, an MLA representing the Alangudi constituency in the district. Sources said that the BLA meeting for the north and south districts of Pudukottai DMK was conducted in two different wedding halls in the town. The meeting for the north district was organised by the district secretary K K Chellapandian and for the south district by the secretary and minister for natural resources S Regupathy. When municipal administration minister Nehru entered the south district meeting venue, supporters of Meyyanathan expressed dissatisfaction over the south district's leadership for constantly ignoring the MLA's images in the party's banners. Later, during the meeting for the north district unit, a section of ward secretaries gheraoed Nehru, seeking the in-charge of the DMK urban district unit, Rajesh, to be removed. The functionaries who blocked Nehru from entering the venue said that they would not leave the party, as they have worked hard. Though the minister invited the functionaries for a talk, the protesters refused to allow the minister inside the hall and raised their dissent. Party sources said that Nehru informed the functionaries that their demands shall be taken to the notice of the CM and deputy CM for a solution during their upcoming visit to Trichy.
