
Simple 14p supplement can help protect against stroke or heart attack triggering condition
The researchers found edible algae like spirulina—which is available at Boots and Holland and Barrett in supplement and powder forms—lower blood pressure.
The dietary supplement spirulina is a blue-green algae known for its nutritional value—as it is high in protein, iron, B vitamins and antioxidants like phycocyanin.
This blue pigment comes from the presence of phycocyanin, a natural protein which supports immune, cardiovascular, liver, and brain health.
Meanwhile, the green comes from chlorophyll, which also has antioxidant, detoxifying, anti‑inflammatory, and gut‑supporting effects.
The findings of the study, which reviewed 29 trials with 1538 participants, were recently published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
The majority of trials tended focused on edible algae as supplements, but others also looked at tablets, pills, drinks and powder.
Their analysis found consuming 3 grams a day of whole edible algae, especially Spirulina, for at least 12 weeks lowers blood pressure.
'This suggests that edible microalgae may serve as a natural approach to managing hypertension, complementing pharmacological treatments,' said the authors.
The silent killer, high blood pressure, also called hypertension, can lead to life threatening complications like strokes or heart attacks.
This is because it damages blood vessels, narrowing and stiffening them—which can result in ruptures and blockages, triggering the life-threatening events.
Symptoms of high blood pressure include headaches, blurred vision, nose bleeds and chest pain.
However, the British Heart Foundation has warned that most people don't realise they have high blood pressure, because the symptoms aren't obvious.
So, that's why they urge people to regularly get their blood pressure checked—which is offered for free at GPs, some workplaces and many pharmacies.
Classic ways to lower blood pressure include having a healthy according to the National Health Service (NHS) are, a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise.
But others include reducing salt, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake, and drinking less coffee.
It comes as Pret A Manger recently released their vibrant blue spirulina-laced iced latte this summer.
However, the coffee shop chain hasn't publicly disclosed how many grams of spirulina are in the drink.
The latest study also looked at other microalgae, but spirulina was the most effective, reducing SBP by 5.28mmHg and DBP by 3.56mmHG.

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is the pressure in arteries when the heart contracts and diastolic blood pressure (DPB) is the pressure when it rests between beats.
The researchers also compared microalgae like Spirulina with macroalgae like seaweeds like kelp.
They found microalgae drove the most benefits with macroalgae having now significant effect.
The scientists also found whole algae—the actual algae dried and eaten like spirulina powder—is more effective in lowering blood pressure.
This was compared to extracts or bioactive compounds pulled out of the algae such as phycocyanin, the blue pigment.
Their findings could suggest that your trendy Pret A Manger drink isn't as effective at lowering blood pressure as the spirulina whole algae supplements.
While a 2022 study suggested a safe dose for adults is between three and 10 grams daily, people should not exceed the dose on the product label.
Spirulina shouldn't be taken by those on blood thinners or have an autoimmune condition, bleeding disorder, allergies, or phenylketonuria (PKU)—a rare genetic disorder.
Meanwhile, there is limited data on spirulina and pregnancy, so it is difficult to say whether it is safe or unsafe while someone is expecting a baby.

Experts express concern for future of Health Survey for England
Public health experts have expressed concern for the future of a 'vital' health survey, after the government said it would no longer be run by NHS England. The Health Survey for England, launched in 1991, is an annual study that collects data from about 8,000 adults and 2,000 children across the country, through face-to-face interviews and questionnaires. It gathers data on a range of important health metrics such as height and weight, smoking and alcohol use, with public experts describing it as an 'arterial' source of data due it being nationally representative and high quality. At a briefing in July by the UK Data Service, the government said the 2025 edition would be the last one because 'NHS England will not be prioritising population health surveys in its long-term strategic work plan'. The government has said that the survey is not being stood down, but will no longer be run by NHS England. However, details regarding how the survey will be run have not yet been revealed as the government says it is currently exploring alternative ways of collecting the same information as the health survey. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own individual health surveys. Veena Raleigh, a senior fellow at the King's Fund, said the survey was an 'arterial source of information on the health of our population' that has been instrumental in shaping and monitoring health services and policy decisions across England, including blood pressure, smoking and obesity. She said: 'Without the Health Survey for England, we would not have invaluable data on current trends in population health and whether the NHS is reaching and treating people and communities who are most at risk of poor health. 'At The King's Fund the survey data has enabled us to assess trends and inequalities in the proportion of people who have multiple risk factors such as smoking, poor diet and excess alcohol use. The research would not have been possible without the Health Survey for England data.' Prof Kamila Hawthorne, the chair of the Royal College of GPs, said the survey would need to be 'replaced with something similar, generating the vital information that organisations across healthcare need to monitor changes in public health'. Gates Foundation commits $2.5 billion to 'ignored' women's health
LONDON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - The Gates Foundation will spend $2.5 billion by 2030 on women's health, it said on Monday, with founder Bill Gates saying the area, including conditions from preeclampsia to menopause, had been neglected for too long. The investment is among its first big commitments since Gates announced earlier this year that he would give away his $200bn fortune by 2045. It is around one-third more than the Foundation spent on women's and maternal health over the last five years. 'Women's health continues to be ignored, underfunded and sidelined. Too many women still die from preventable causes or live in poor health,' Gates said in a statement. 'That must change.' The work will look at deeply under-researched areas that affect hundreds of millions of women in both high- and low-income countries, from preeclampsia and gestational diabetes to heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, and menopause. Investment will focus on five key areas: obstetric care and maternal immunization; maternal health and nutrition; gynaecological and menstrual health; contraceptive innovation; and sexually transmitted infection. The aim is to kickstart research, develop products, and ensure equitable access to them worldwide. The Foundation's head of gender equality, Dr Anita Zaidi, said that the field had been held back in part because of bias and a lack of data on key issues, such as how drugs cross into the uterus. 'If you look at the literature, there may be only 10 women who've been studied, ever,' she told Reuters. 'We don't even have the answers to these basic questions.' Just one percent of the healthcare research and innovation spend went to female-specific conditions beyond cancer, a 2021 analysis by McKinsey & Co found. Zaidi acknowledged that the $2.5 billion was a 'drop in the bucket' compared with what was needed and called on others to step in, including the private sector, philanthropists and governments. Gates' ex-wife, philanthropist Melinda French Gates, has also invested in women's health since leaving the Foundation last year.
