Nissan Recalls 444K Models for Potential VC-Turbo Engine Failure

Car and Driver3 days ago
Nissan is recalling 443,899 models for VC-Turbo engines that could possibly fail.
The Nissan Altima, Rogue, and the Infiniti QX50/QX55 are models that have or had the complex variable-compression engine with bearings that could fail.
Dealers will inspect the engines, and in cases where it's necessary, they will replace the engine for free.
Nissan's novel variable-compression-ratio engine is at the center of a massive recall that involves nearly 444K models. The Nissan Rogue is the brand's most popular model in the United States, and as a result, it accounts for the majority of the recall population (348,554 total units). The Nissan Altima, as well as the Infiniti QX50 and QX55, are also among the models that are being recalled.
According to a recall report that Nissan submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on June 26, 2025, the issue involves bearing failures. The report specifically identifies the engines' main bearing and the A-, C-, and L-links, which may be defective and could cause engine damage or failure. As a result, Nissan is recalling 2021–2024 Rogues and 2019–2020 Altimas (5685 total units); 84,536 Infiniti QX50s (2019–2022) and 5124 QX55s (2022) are also part of the recall.

Nissan's VC-Turbo engine is the only one in production that can vary its compression ratio. It's designed to optimize either torque or fuel economy on the fly, and it took Nissan two decades and 300 patents to bring it to life. A turbocharged 2.0-liter version of the VC-Tfirst appeared on the 2019 Infiniti QX50 and then migrated to the Nissan Altima. The Rogue adopted a variable-compression 1.5-liter turbo three for the 2021 model year, and it remains the compact SUV's only engine.
Nissan states that the bearing failures occur gradually rather than instantly, so drivers will likely have clues that their engine is on the fritz. Along with vehicle warning lights and messages, Nissan says drivers may hear an unusual engine noise or feel the engine running rough. Ideally, people who own vehicles involved in the recall will bring them into their dealer to address the issue before sustaining any damage or failure.
Dealers will inspect oil pans for specific metal debris. If nothing is found in the three-pot VC-T, a technician will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle's ECU. Only the engine oil will need to be changed if no debris exists in the turbo four's oil pan. If there is debris where it's not supposed to be, Nissan says that it will replace either engine free of charge. A reimbursement plan will be available for owners whose warranty has expired. Dealers will be notified by July 15; owners will begin to be notified on Aug. 25, 2025.

Lumissil Microsystems Expands Automotive Lighting Portfolio with Family of High-Side Linear LED Drivers

Single and Triple Channel Drivers Enhance Thermal Optimization for High-Power Applications MILPITAS, Calif., July 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lumissil Microsystems announces the release of the IS32LT315x family, a new line of current-source linear LED drivers designed for automotive lighting applications, and Tail/Brake light combinations. The family consists of three devices: Single Channel IS32LT3151A/B/C/D/E and Triple Channel IS32LT3152A/B and IS32LT3153A/B/E. The IS32LT315x line of high-side linear drivers provides designers with enhanced thermal optimization and fault reporting capabilities. Differentiated by channel count, output current, and fault features to meet a range of application needs as mentioned in the table below. They are available in configurations with either a single 450mA channel or three 150mA channels, with output current configured by an external resistor. Drivers, such as the IS32LT3151A/C and IS32LT3153A/B/E include single LED short detection and support analog current adjustment for LED thermal management via an external NTC resistor or enable dual brightness levels using an external FET switch. The IS32LT3151B/D/E and IS32LT3152A/B drivers limit some features to prioritize compact packaging and cost-saving objectives. Based on a high-side output topology, these drivers allow LED output strings to share common ground, reducing wiring and simplifying harness design. For high power applications, optional thermal shunt/sharing resistors can be added to offload heat from the driver, reducing thermal stress when driving high-brightness LEDs. All devices include open/short fault detection at the LED string level and can be configured for 'one-fail-all-OFF' behavior upon fault detection. Fault conditions are reported through a shared open-drain FAULTB pin, providing system designers with the flexibility to define fault response based on application requirements. All drivers in the family are designed and qualified to AEC-Q100 standards for reliable operation in harsh automotive environments. Additionally, the IS32LT3151C/D, IS32LT3152B, and IS32LT3153B are designed in accordance with ISO 26262 ASIL-B safety requirements. 'The IS32LT315x family was designed to cover all the essentials thermal management, current adjustment, and safety compliance without forcing any compromises,' said Lyn Zastrow, VP of Marketing and Sales at Lumissil Microsystems. 'This product family enables smarter designs without tradeoffs.' All devices support a wide operating voltage range from 4.5V to 40V and are AEC-Q100 qualified for temperature grade 1 (-40°C to 125°C), with junction temperature ratings up to 150°C. The IS32LT3151B/D/E are available in compact SOP8-EP packages, while the other variants come in eTSSOP packages with 14-, 16-, or 20-pin options. Availability and pricing To enhance electrical and thermal characteristics, the IS32LT315x family is available with copper (Cu) wire bonding. Tesla shares fall as Musk's 'America Party' riles investors

LONDON (Reuters) -Tesla shares fell over 3% on Monday, under pressure from investor concerns about the focus of boss Elon Musk after he announced he would form a new U.S. political party, marking a new escalation in his feud with President Donald Trump. Tesla stock fell over 3% in Frankfurt, pointing to another decline once premarket trading gets underway following the three-day weekend for Independence Day. Veteran tech analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush said Musk was Tesla's "biggest asset" and his decision to dive deeper into politics would likely put the company's shares under pressure. "Tesla needs Musk as CEO and its biggest asset and not heading down the political route yet at the same time getting on Trump's bad side," Ives said in a note on Sunday. "It would also not shock us if the Tesla board gets involved at some point given the political nature of this endeavour depending on how far Musk takes it." Trump on Sunday called Musk's plans to form the "America Party" "ridiculous," launching new barbs at the tech billionaire and saying the Musk ally he once named to lead NASA would have presented a conflict of interest given Musk's business interests in space. Tesla's investors are experiencing 'exhaustion' from Musk's continued political focus, says Dan Ives

Tesla investors are frustrated with Elon Musk's political involvement, wrote analyst Dan Ives. Musk's new political party and feud with Trump worry investors about Tesla's future, Ives wrote. Tesla's stock has dropped 22% this year amid lower sales and Musk's political activities. Some Tesla investors just want the company's CEO to focus on making cars. A Tesla analyst and one of its biggest bulls, Dan Ives, wrote that many of the company's investors feel a "sense of exhaustion" about Elon Musk's insistence on spending time in politics. "Musk diving deeper into politics and now trying to take on the Beltway establishment is exactly the opposite direction that Tesla investors/shareholders want him to take during this crucial period for the Tesla story," Ives, a Wedbush analyst, wrote in a note published on Sunday. The note followed Musk's announcement that he is creating a new political party amid his feud with President Donald Trump over the "Big Beautiful Bill." "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," Musk wrote on X on Saturday. In his note, Ives said that Musk gave Tesla supporters a period of relief when he left the Trump Administration and the Department of Government Efficiency in May. It was good news for investors who worried that Tesla wasn't getting enough of the billionaire's attention. "That relief lasted a very short time and now has a taken a turn for the worst with this latest announcement," Ives wrote. The analyst added that Tesla's shares will likely be "under some pressure" on Monday as investors worry about Trump viewing Musk as more of a competitor than a friend. Tesla's stock is down 22% so far this year. "Musk/Tesla do not need to keep poking the bear as Trump can create more hurdles for Musk/Tesla/SpaceX over the coming years," Ives wrote. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In response to Musk's announcement, Trump said on his Truth Social platform on Sunday that Musk had gone "completely off the rails." "He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States," the president wrote, adding that Musk was angry because the spending bill eliminated incentives to buy electric cars. Musk's dabbling in politics in the past year has hit Tesla's performance. In the first half of this year, the EV maker faced protests, boycotts, and attacks over Musk's work with DOGE. More recently, the company's stock has suffered because of the ongoing feud between Musk and the president. Last week, the carmaker reported that it delivered about 384,000 EVs in the second quarter, a 13.5% decrease from the same period in 2024. Still, Tesla shareholders have long indicated that they don't think Musk can be replaced as CEO. In May, Tesla's stock rose 7% in the week after Musk said he was "back to spending 24/7 at work" and sleeping in the office. In June last year, shareholders approved Musk's controversial $55 billion pay package, which was largely seen as a referendum on his leadership. There was concern among investors that if the pay package had been thrown out, Musk might lose interest in the EV giant and divert attention to his other ventures.
