SRM-A.P.'s student part of women's team that won gold in 4×400 metres relay at international tourney

Kunja Rajitha, a first-year B. Com. student at Paari School of Business, SRM University-A.P., Amaravati, is part of the Women's 4×400 metres relay team that made history by clinching a gold on Day 3 of the 26th Asian Athletics Championship being held in South Korea on April 30, Thursday.
The other three in her team included Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary and Subha Venkatesan. The quartet clocked the season-best time of 3:34.18s, edging past Vietnam and Sri Lanka in the finals, according to a report from the university. India won gold in the Women's 4x400m relay at the Asian Athletics Championships after 12 years.
The university's Sports Director, Anup Singh Suryavanshi, congratulated Rajitha on her achievement and said it is a testament to her hard work and resilience. Her performance on such an international platform inspires all student-athletes nationwide, he added.
SRM University Pro Vice-Chancellor Satish Kumar and Vice-Chancellor Manoj K Arora praised Rajitha and said her journey reminds one that students can rise to any challenge with the right support and determination. Her success adds to the growing legacy of the university as a hub for talent, they said.
Rajitha hails from an inaccessible tribal village near Kunavaram in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. Despite all odds, she continued her education while pursuing her dreams and became a national-level athlete, the release said.
Rajitha bagged gold in the 400-metre sprint event at the Khelo India Youth Games-2022, held in Haryana. She also secured second place in a similar event in the 2019 edition of Khelo India held in Assam. In 2018, Rajitha joined Tenvic Sports Academy in Nellore.
Later, she trained under coach Mike Russell at SAA Centre of Excellence in Guntur.

A total of 73 women participated in the Mysuru edition of 'Asmita Khelo India Women's Cycling City League 2025' held at Chamundi foothills in the city on Sunday. The participants competed across three categories: under-18 girls, amateur women, and elite women. Khelo India Women's City League, approved by the Cycling Federation of India, had been assigned to Mysuru District Amateur Cycling Association (MDACA) by the Karnataka State Cycling Association with the goal of promoting women's participation in competitive cycling, said a statement by MDACA here. The event, organised by MDACA, also received the support of the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Hosted by Silicon City International School, Lalithadripura, the event was flagged off by Khelo India basketball medallist Yashaswini M.K. Results In the under-18 girls category, Sethu Lakshmi M.B. won the first prize, while Aradhana Santosh and Maiza Backer N.C. took second and third places, respectively. In elite women category, Gleonna Dsouza came first, followed by Nagasiri H.N. and Karen Marshall respectively. In the amateur women's category, the first prize was bagged by Namratha Sreedhar. The second and third prizes were bagged by Vatsala K M and Lakshmidevi, respectively.

Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Mandapalli Ramprasad Reddy has assured TDP legislator Bonela Vijaya Chandra that the government would construct a state-of-the-art sports complex in Parvatipuram soon, as part of the Khelo India initiative. He said that the government plans to spend around ₹8 crore for the construction of the complex with the state-of-the-art facilities which will help young athletes from the remote and tribal areas of Parvatiuram-Manyam district train for national and international sports competitions. Mr. Vijaya Chandra, who met the Minister in Amaravati on Friday thanked him for accepting the proposal and initiating steps for the preparation of a detailed project report. He said that the complex would be a boon for sportspersons especially those who excelled and received medals in Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, archery and other sports. The facility will have modern infrastructure along with expert coaching enabling talented youth to pursue professional sports careers.

India's long jumper Murali Sreeshankar won the the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto 2025, a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze-level meet, with a best jump of 7.75m. Sreeshankar started with a jumo of 7.63m and recorded his best jump in the second round (7.75). He then registered 7.69m, followed by a foul attempt, 6.12m and rounded up with a jump of 7.58m. Poland's Piotr Tarkowski and Australia's Chris Mitrevski finished second and third, respectively. Sreeshankar was out of action for a long period of time after suffering a knee injury lasy year in April, which forced him to miss the Paris Olympics 2024. He had qualified for the Paris Olympics after recording an 8.37m jump on the way to winning silver at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships. Sreeshankar had a mixed season in 2023. He won silver at the Asian Championships and the Asian Games. He also competed at the Budapest World Athletics Championships and qualified for the Diamond League Finals in Eugene. Sreeshankar marked his return from a lengthy injury layoff in style by winning the long jump competition at the Indian Open Athletics 2025 meet in Pune on July 12. He logged his winning jump of 8.05m in his fourth attempt at the Savitribai Phule University Sports Complex. The 26-year-old began with 7.84m and improved further to 7.99m before he breached the 8m mark. The World Athletics Championships 2025 qualification mark stands at 8.27m. This was Murali Sreeshankar's first competitive outing since winning a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, the People's Republic of China, almost two years ago. After a winning return from the injury, Sreeshankar is aiming for a World Championships later this year in Tokyo and eyeing next year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
