Edinburgh fairground apologises and closes after waltzer flew off tracks at high speed
An Edinburgh fairground has closed down and issued an apology after a waltzer came off the tracks and crashed at high speed during a family day out.
On Saturday, May 10, dad-of-three Kevin McNulty and his partner Brooke were with his children, Kayla, 13, Leona, 12, and Codie, 7, at Galactic Carnival in Westside Plaza Wester Hailes, when the terrifying incident occurred.
Panic soon set in while the children were enjoying the waltzer ride, as while the cars spun around at pace, Kevin's kids' car came off the track. The children could be heard screaming in terror in the footage, with the clip ending as the car came to a stop and Kevin raced around to be with his children.
Organisers, Galactic Carnival, have now apologised to the family and announced that their event will be closed while an investigation takes place.
Galactic Carnival Edinburgh over the weekend. First aid attended immediately and was offered to those involved in the incident and no ambulance was required.
"Galactic Carnival sincerely apologises to the families who had to go through this experience, and will be working tirelessly to assist in the ongoing investigation.
"We are truly sorry for the distress caused by the incident at our event. Public safety at our events has always been, and continues to be, our top priority.
"All rides at our events undergo extensive safety testing in line with government guidelines, including daily safety checks, and are also inspected by an independent third party safety inspection body (ADIPS). This incident is now being investigated by third party inspection bodies and the Health and Safety Executive.
"We have decided to close the event to allow for investigation to take place. All tickets purchased for future dates will be refunded automatically through our ticketing agent Skiddle. Once again we are truly sorry for the distress this has caused."
Speaking to the Record, Kevin explained how he was in the car behind with Brooke when the incident happened. He said: "I just noticed the children's car spinning our way, but it didn't stop and just smashed off us and then went flying past.
"I didn't think and just jumped up and off the ride while it was still going at full pelt without even thinking. I ran around towards where the car had landed and thankfully they were alright and hadn't suffered any injuries.
"Even today I am still in complete shock. I feel sick just thinking about it and how bad it could all have gone. We are all just extremely lucky that the children weren't badly hurt."
Posting about the incident initially, Kevin said: 'Last night we were at these shows at Wester Hailes plaza...my three kids were on the waltzers and then the unthinkable happened.
"Going full pelt and not slowing down their car came completely off and then went flying into our car and then smashed about the place crashing into the side off the track.
"Thankfully there was a heavy large speaker that they collided with or they would have been through the whole thing and then the ending would have been a completely different story. I can't stop thinking about it.'
He continued: 'The shows continued to go, but not the waltzers. The place should have been shut down for a full inspection. It was like something you see in the movies and my kids are very, very lucky that they managed to get out of this still walking.'
He asked: 'Any shares or advice on who/how to speak with to take this further would be massively appreciated!'

Scandal confirmed as major Coronation Street legend cheats on husband
The Coronation Street air has been seething with unresolved sexual tension ever since Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) arrived in Weatherfield and set eyes on his sister-in-law Abi Webster (Sally Carman). And it looks like they're finally about to give in to their feelings in episodes airing soon. When Abi realised that the handsome man she'd been flirting with in Freshco's car park was actually Kevin (Michael Le Vell)'s brother, it obviously came as a shock. Over the months as they've got to know each other, the attraction between them hasn't died down, although Abi has insisted that it's a love that can never be, because of her loving Kevin and him having cancer. Recently Kevin has discovered two things. One is that his wife and his brother seem to either be having an affair or are on the verge of it. The other is that he doesn't have cancer any more as his treatment has been successful. However, he's pretending that he still does have cancer in the hope that this will make Abi think twice about leaving him – and so far that's working. It's a complex situation, and Carl is dealing with complexities of his own as he owes a lot of money and has been using Kev's garage as a venue for doing up stolen cars as a side-hustle to try and make some money. These situations all come together in an upcoming episode when Kevin overhears Carl talking to his accomplice Fiona about a flash car he's working on and how, if she steals it, they can split the profit. Kevin attempts to pursue Fiona as she drives off in the car and soon collapses, unwell. Glenda (Jodie Prenger) takes him to the hospital and soon Carl turns up. Kevin reveals that he knows that Carl has been up to something dodgy with Fiona. Carl turns the tables by telling his brother that he's been chatting to the medical staff and he knows that Kevin is now cancer-free. When Abi hears what Carl has been up to she has a go at him for the trouble he's caused. He resists the urge to tell her that Kevin is deceiving her about still having cancer. She does find out, however – from Tyrone (Alan Halsall). She's worrying about how to tell Jack (Kyran Bowes) that Kevin's cancer hasn't responded to treatment and Tyrone knows he can't let her do that and breaks it to her that Kevin has been lying about his health since receiving the all-clear. Battle of Orgreave miners warn police 'no more shredding' after public inquiry win
Miners from The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign have issued a stark warning to the police after it was finally announced a public inquiry would open more than four decades after the event Miners from The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign who have won their victory for a public inquiry are warning police 'no more shredding'. They were speaking at a press conference in Sheffield, about the 'historic' announcement that there would be an inquiry into the Battle of Orgreave. They told how they want 'full disclosure' to 'clear our names'. They said they want to see all the secret documents handed over including 'raw footage' of the police violence captured by TV companies. They pointed out the BBC reversed footage to make them look like the 'villains' - which they later apologised for. They said it was an 'absolute tragedy' they have had to wait so long in their fight for justice. Police could now be forced to give evidence about the day of terror at the Orgreave Coking Plant on the hot summer's day of June 18, 1984. The investigation announced by the Home Office is set to launch in the autumn will look at the events surrounding the clashes which caused 120 injuries. In total, 95 picketers were arrested and initially charged with riot and violent disorder, but all charges were later dropped after evidence was discredited. But campaigners for the OTJC say they fear there will now be more 'shredders overheating all over the country'. They were referring to the 'disgraceful' news that Northumbria Police had recently admitted to disposing of documents relating to the miners' strike in April 2024. Kevin Horne, 75, who was arrested at Orgreave for 'unlawful assembly' showed his file from police marked 'closed file 2071' with the details mainly redacted. 'We have this chance now of wiping the slate clean so that our children and grandchildren can respect the police again,' he said. 'I've already lost my boys, they don't like the police at all, they said they'd seen me come back from Orgreave black and blue. I don't remember that. I know I had to wait 14 months for my name to be cleared, all that time thinking I could be going to prison for life. So let's get on with this inquiry and stop the police shredding.' Kevin told how he was sitting on a wall when he was bundled into a police van, Later he didn't recognise the police statements which he said had been made up of 'total lies' saying he had attacked several officers. John Dunn, 73, from Derbyshire who suffered a serious head injury when he was hit over the head with a truncheon on the picket lines weeks before Orgreave, says he hopes this will 'open the door' to look at policing throughout the 'frightening' dispute. 'I was seriously injured, arrested and framed on the picket line weeks before Orgreave, since then I have been trying to clear my name. I have two criminal convictions to this day, I have a scar in the back of my head. I hope this Orgreave will open the door on what was happening every day throughout that strike, in our villages away from the cameras.' In a message to police, he told The Mirror: 'Get ready, it's our turn, you'd better make sure that everything is available to us. I am sure I have heard these shredders going all over the country this weekend. Watch out, we're on to you now.' Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign Secretary (OTJC), Kate Flannery, said: 'We are indebted to the striking miners for their dedication to that year-long struggle that changed our lives forever. Thank you to everyone who has campaigned with us over the last 13 years for an Orgreave Inquiry. It has been a long, hard and sometimes lonely journey, but we are determined, persistent people…' She said they hoped to get answers about the 'paramilitary violent policing' across mining villages and communities. Adding: "We know the Tory Government of the 1980s were directly involved in the strike while 'professing 'non-involvement'...This was state sponsored organisation against the miners and their livelihoods... 'Orgreave marked a turning point in the policing of public protest. The Right to Protest should be a fundamental human right. With no accountability of policing at Orgreave a message was sent to the police that they could employ violence with impunity. This set a culture that enabled the police cover up in 1989 at Hillsborough…'
