Clarity needed in tax policy: Yong

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party President Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee called on the Government to pause further tax changes, engage meaningfully with stakeholders and restore clarity, affordability and ease of collection in order to stabilise the economy and rebuild public confidence. He also urged the Inland Revenue Board to desist from enforcement on the new taxes until rates and procedures are clarified, taxpayers can afford them and collection is effective rather than punitive, as harsh enforcement risks destroying businesses and livelihoods.

'It is observed that the recently announced sales and service tax (SST) is imposed inconsistently even on the same category of products. 'For example, local and imported avocados are subject to different rates, creating confusion for both consumers and businesses,' he said. Meanwhile, tax enforcement actions are pressing forward despite the unclear guidelines and the current weak economic conditions. Yong said the first essential principle of any proper tax system is that rules must be clear enough for people and businesses to understand their obligations without confusion. 'A second foundational requirement is that tax rates be set at levels taxpayers can reasonably afford, especially in a fragile economy where many are already struggling. 'A third guiding tenet is that the Government's collection process must be simple and predictable, avoiding enforcement actions that punish those who genuinely wish to comply,' he added. Yong said the ongoing shifts in SST rules, e-invoicing deadlines, fuel subsidy adjustments and stamp duty regulations fail to meet these three core standards. Thai DPM Phumtham to be appointed caretaker PM in special Cabinet meeting Thursday (July 3)
BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai (pic) will be appointed caretaker Prime Minister during a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday (July 2), following an oath-taking ceremony earlier in the day, Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit confirmed. Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said on Wednesday (July 2) that Suriya, acting as Prime Minister, will lead the new ministers of the second Paetongtarn Cabinet for a royal audience at the Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall on Thursday morning, where they will be sworn in before His Majesty the King. After the ceremony, Suriya will convene a special Cabinet meeting at the Command Building at Government House at 2pm, the spokesman added. The new Cabinet was announced on Tuesday, the same day that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended from duty by the Constitutional Court following a petition by a group of senators. Phumtham will participate in the oath-taking ceremony as he was removed from his previous role as deputy prime minister and defence minister, and reappointed as deputy prime minister and interior minister in the new Cabinet. Jirayu stated that the special Cabinet meeting would discuss the distribution of responsibilities among deputy prime ministers and certain ministers. Meanwhile, Suriya confirmed on Wednesday morning that, after the oath-taking ceremony, he would sign an order as acting Prime Minister to appoint Phumtham as caretaker Prime Minister. A Government House source told Thansetthakij that during the special meeting, the Cabinet would invoke Article 41 of the Act on Rules for Public Administration of the State, BE 2534, to appoint Phumtham as caretaker Prime Minister. The source said that after Phumtham's appointment, he would invoke Article 11(2) of the Act to distribute responsibilities among the deputy prime ministers. He would assign them to oversee various agencies and ministries. The source also noted that during the meeting, the Cabinet would be updated on key national situations. The Cabinet would also be asked to approve an exemption from enforcing a previous Cabinet resolution on mangrove forest protection, to allow the construction of a highway in Chachoengsao. CM urges civil servants to maintain integrity during election year

Pic by CMD KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has urged public service personnel to uphold professionalism, neutrality and integrity in carrying out their duties during this election year. He said the role of civil servants is vital to ensure that administrative operations and public service delivery continue without disruption during the State Elections. Addressing the Chief Minister's Department post-Cabinet meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday, Hajiji said civil service efficiency during this period would reflect the government's commitment to democracy and administrative stability. He also called on Department Heads to carry out their responsibilities with stronger commitment, improved efficiency, and closer project monitoring to ensure the timely completion of approved initiatives. Delays, wastage, and damage to public trust must be avoided through proper governance and accountability, said Hajiji. He reminded civil servants to remain responsive, proactive, and to act with integrity, prioritising public interest over personal gain to meet the State Government's objectives. Negri to ban alcohol consumption in certain public areas, including parks and beaches
SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan has decided to ban the consumption of alcoholic beverages along public beaches in Port Dickson, says Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. The Mentri Besar said his administration has also decided to prohibit the consumption of alcoholic drinks in public fields, children's playgrounds and recreational parks. "The state executive council, at its meeting today, decided to ban such activities in these four public areas because of the high number of complaints from the people," he told reporters after chairing the meeting at Wisma Negri here on Wednesday (July 2). "Those who flout the regulations will be liable to a compound of up to RM2,000," he said, adding that all local councils have been told to enforce the ruling within their respective jurisdictions. Aminuddin said the ban was necessary as those who consumed alcoholic beverages often caused a nuisance, which caused others to stay away from these areas. He said some irresponsible individuals would also break the bottles and leave a mess. The authorities have also received reports of injuries caused by broken glass, he added. "There have also been reports of fights among those who consume alcohol in these places, and we want to put an end to this. "All Malaysians should be allowed free access to these places anytime without having to worry about their safety or wellbeing," he said, adding that some individuals feared going near these areas when they saw groups of people consuming alcohol. Aminuddin said that at present, the state's by-laws did not specify that drinking alcohol in public places was an offence. He said policemen or local council officers who respond to public complaints are only able to advise those who do so to leave the area. "This has caused certain public areas to be popular meeting points for those who consume alcoholic beverages," he added.
