Tensions rise in Uganda as opposition leader Bobi Wine accuses the government of abducting and torturing his chief bodyguard, Eddie Mutwe. The country's army chief—and President Museveni's son—Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly admitted to detaining Mutwe, sparking outrage with threats made on social media. Mutwe appeared in court limping and was charged with robbery. With general elections looming in 2026, rights groups warn of an intensifying crackdown on opposition voices. As security forces reportedly raid opposition offices, questions grow over the future of democracy in Uganda and whether President Museveni is paving the way for a dynastic succession.

NDA likely to commence consultations over its nominee for VP post after July 28

NEW DELHI: With the EC formally initiating the process of electing the next Vice President by appointing a Returning Officer, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to commence consultations for its nominee for the key constitutional post after July 28. This move comes amid indications that the Opposition will also field a candidate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to speak in both Houses of Parliament after July 28 on Operation Sindoor. In the electoral college, which comprises members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the ruling BJP-led NDA holds a clear majority with nearly 425 members out of a total of 782 MPs. This makes its nominee, clear and strong to win the polls to this second-highest constitutional post of Vice President after the President of India. There is growing speculation that the Modi government may once again take a bold step to send a strong message in line with its mantra of women's empowerment by fielding a woman candidate. If this possibility materialises, it would mark a significant representation of nari-shakti, with women occupying both the posts of President and Vice President. In the days to come, the prospect of a woman serving as Army Chief may no longer remain a distant assumption. 'Remember, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, at a function in Bihar, expressed hope that one day a woman may be seen as the Chief of the Army,' remarked a senior BJP leader. Although no official briefing has been made by the BJP regarding the selection of a candidate, sources have indicated that the Vice Presidential candidate will be chosen from within the party, with strong links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Given recent experiences, the BJP is unlikely to take the risk of selecting a candidate who could prove unpredictable, once in office. The party leadership is expected to begin serious discussions with NDA allies to reach a consensus on a suitable candidate after 29 July, following the Prime Minister's speech in Parliament. 'One thing is clear, no candidate who has defected to the BJP from other parties, especially Congress, would be considered for this post. The possibility is that our alliance may finally agree on any one of four serving governors who have been associated with the Sangh and are deeply attached with the party's ideology of keeping the Nation and its Constitution above everything,' remarked a very senior BJP leader on July 25 to TNIE. Among the prominent names currently being considered are Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Bihar Governor Md Arif Khan, and Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel.

Over 3.52 lakh perform Amarnath Yatra in 21 days

More than 3.52 lakh devotees performed the ongoing Amarnath Yatra so far as another batch of 2,896 pilgrims left Jammu for the Valley on Friday, officials said. Officials added that the number of Yatris performing the Shri Amarnath ji Yatra during the last 21 days since it started on July 3, has crossed the expected figure of 3.50 lakh. "Another batch of 2,896 Yatris left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu on Friday in two escorted convoys for the two base camps." "First escorted convoy of 42 vehicles carrying 790 Yatris left at 3:30 a.m. for Baltal base camp while the second convoy of 75 vehicles carrying 2,106 Yatris left at 4:18 a.m. for Pahalgam base camp," officials said. 'Chhari Mubarak' (Lord Shiva's Holy Mace) was taken to the historic Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar for customary Puja on Thursday by a group of Sadhus led by Mahant Deependra Giri. The Puja at Shankaracharya Temple is held each year on the occasion of 'Haryali-Amavasya' (Shravan Amavasya) as per the age-old customs. On Friday, the Chhari Mubarak will be taken to the 'Sharika Bhawani' Temple atop the Hari Parvat hillock in Srinagar for customary Puja. Chhari Mubarak will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from Dashnami Akhara temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra. Authorities have made extensive multi-tier security arrangements for this year's Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them based on faith in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam. Additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB and the local police. The Army has deployed more than 8,000 special commandos to secure the passage of the pilgrims this year. The Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan. Devotees approach the holy cave shrine situated 3,888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. Those using the Pahalgam route pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot. This trek takes a pilgrim four days to get to the cave shrine. Those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after having darshan. No helicopter services are available to Yatris this year due to security reasons. The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

July 25, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Historic Accord

The problem of Punjab, which has spawned some of the bloodiest events in the country's history in the last four years, has at long last been solved. PM Rajiv Gandhi and Akali Dal chief Harchand Singh Longowal signed an agreement that includes the transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab and some Hindi-speaking areas to Haryana, rehabilitation of those discharged from the Army and reference of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution to the Sarkaria Commission. Scenes of Joy Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's announcement regarding the Punjab accord was generally welcomed by the common man. Scenes of jubilation were witnessed outside the Indian Express office, where Sikhs were seen embracing Hindus with joy. There were reports from different parts of the Capital of people distributing sweets after the announcement. Leaders Hail Accord Leaders of several political parties, parliamentarians and eminent citizens hailed the accord. Punjab Governor Arjun Singh, who was present in the Speaker's gallery when the announcement was made, expressed his 'deepest pleasure'. More than 50 MPs from different parts of the country in a joint statement said the accord would put an end to the era of confrontation and uncertainty and usher in an era of peace, prosperity and progress. Sacking Staff The Supreme Court has held that a government servant can be dismissed, removed or demoted without an opportunity to explain his case under Article 311 (2) (b) of the Constitution if it was in public interest. The principle that a person should get an opportunity to be heard before action is taken against him ('natural justice') can be modified and in exceptional cases even excluded, a Constitution bench has ruled.
