Former UMass star Cale Makar wins Norris Trophy as NHL's top defenseman
Makar finds himself in elite company as he joins Bobby Orr (eight times), Denis Potvin (three), Paul Coffey, Rod Langway and Erik Karlsson as the only players to take home two or more Norris Trophies before turning 27.

Makar, who won the Hobey Baker Award at UMass while leading the Minutemen to the Frozen Four in 2019, was surprised with the award by his family and friends. He was golfing with his buddies in a video posted on the NHL's social media account when they stopped midround. A big group was waiting in the yard for him and clapped as he received the trophy.

'My first thought was, honestly, that one of the boys that I was playing with won some golf trophy and it was a surprise thing,' Makar said in the video. 'It definitely was not on my radar.'
His mom added: 'Even though he doesn't like surprises, his reaction today was awesome.'
Makar's regular season included such milestone moments as scoring his 100th career NHL goal (Jan. 18 against Dallas) and becoming the third-fastest defenseman in history to reach 400 career points (Feb. 23 at St. Louis).

He began the season by matching a career high with a 13-game point streak. He was in a tie with Mark Stone for the scoring lead at the end of October. That was the first time a blueliner led or shared the league lead in points at the end of October since Orr was in a four-way tie on Nov. 1, 1974.
In addition, Makar helped Canada take home the title in the midseason
Makar had a goal and four assists in a first-round playoff loss to Dallas during a series that went seven games. His 1.08 points per game average in the postseason is the third-best among defensemen with at least 60 playoff games.
He also won the Norris in 2022, a season in which the Avalanche hoisted the Stanley Cup.

Things didn't end well between La'el Collins and the Dallas Cowboys last go 'round. After starting 71 of 74 games for the Cowboys between 2015-2021, the team soured on Collins. His commitment to health, fitness and the game fell into question as injuries mounted. Dallas eventually released Collins, and his career never truly recovered. He played 15 games in 2023 marking the last meaningful football he'd play to date. Once upon a time Collins was a valued member of a stellar Cowboys line. With injuries ravaging the Cowboys offensive line in training camp, Dallas is in the market for viable offensive lineman at multiple positions Collins was brought in for a workout to hopefully be just that. After reportedly working with famed offensive line guru Duke Manyweather over the offseason, Collins is said to be back in game shape. At 33, it might be now or never for Collins. It's been reported the workout went well and Collins is signing with the Cowboys. He has the ability to play inside and outside and could be a solid swing lineman for the Cowboys in the preseason and possibly beyond. Collins' friendship with Dak Prescott runs deep and putting a happy ending on the saga in Dallas is just what the doctor ordered for this drama-filled time of the year (see also: Trevon Diggs and Micah Parsons). Time will tell what Collins has left in the tank and what kind of role he'll play n 2025. But getting a shot at redemption is truly something to cheer for. Gary Bettman faces all-important question after Canadian Five's acquittal
The CBA, extended last month for four years, grants the NHL commissioner essentially unfettered power regarding off-ice discipline. If the NHLPA had issues with Article 18-A, the union should have addressed its concerns during the recent kumbaya negotiations, which apparently never touched larger systemic issues off the ice. Now, the union's words ring hollow in advance of Gary Bettman's decision whether to readmit the Canadian Five to the NHL after Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were found not guilty on July 24 by Judge Maria Carroccia following their trial in Ontario, after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman in her London hotel room in June 2018 following a Hockey Canada event. In this case, not guilty does not equate to innocent. That is my opinion, just as it was the judge's opinion that the woman — known as E.M., whose identity is shielded by a publication ban — was not credible in her testimony. I am not an attorney and I am not conversant with Canadian law, but from the moment the judge refused to admit Brett Howden's texts into evidence, the verdict seemed inevitable. "From how our form is, then of course [it's disappointing], but I think Charles did a good job on the last lap," Norris said. "He probably risked a little bit more in these conditions. The wind changed a lot and it really seemed to punish us in a bigger way it seems. "Not too many complaints. We thought we both did some good laps at the end, and we were just slow. So, nothing to complain of, but Charles did a good job. "It's a long lap with many corners. It's tricky, but in Q2, we showed how quick we can go, and our advantage.
