Phillies' Ranger Suárez gets a shorter start as the ace left-hander's workload grows
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ranger Suárez has piled up enough pitches and innings this season for the reigning NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies to fit the modern definition of a workhorse. On Saturday, it was time for a break. Or at least time to shorten the left-hander's outing against Cincinnati to give him some rest and try to prevent wear and tear on a body that broke down at the end of last season. Suárez was pulled after just five innings and 80 pitches, the fewest of each since his first start of the season in early May. Suárez earned a no-decision but did his part — along with home runs from Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa — to help the Phillies beat the Reds 5-1. Manger Rob Thomson said because of a recent heavy workload, Suárez entered on an 85-pitch limit. Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six in all but his first start of the year, when he allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. Suárez (7-2, 1.99 ERA) has been superb since then. He made six June starts and threw at least 94 pitches in all of them, and he has a 1.22 ERA over his last 11 starts. 'We went into today just trying to pull back a little bit,' Thomson said. 'I don't really concern myself with (velocity) because he pitches and that's what he did today. He threw strikes, first-pitch strikes.' Suárez said he agreed with Thomson's decision to play it safe with his left shoulder and back. Suárez has not allowed more than one earned run since June 7 at Pittsburgh, and he's permitted one or zero earned runs in nine of his 12 starts. Even though he missed April as he recovered from a back injury, Suárez's numbers are strong enough to merit consideration for a second straight All-Star nod. Thomson stumped for his star pitcher — who's eligible for free agency at the end of the season — along with fellow starters Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez to represent the NL on July 15 in Atlanta. He'll find out Sunday if he's on the team. 'When the season starts, one of the goals you have as a player is to go to the All-Star Game,' Suárez said through an interpreter. 'On that end, I'm a little hopeful. If that happens, I'm excited about it. But I think the main thing for us right now is to focus on just finishing the season as healthy as possible.' The Phillies have reason to be cautious with Suárez as they chase their fourth straight playoff berth and first World Series title since 2008. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Suárez went 10-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 16 starts last season through June 25 before a bad back stuck him on the injured list and he tailed off with a 2-6 mark and a 6.54 ERA over his last 11 starts. Suárez also missed time with a back injury in 2022. The Phillies need Suárez healthy and at his best in October, even if pitch counts cost him a win in July. 'If we have to do it again,' Thomson said, 'we'll do it again.' ___ AP MLB:

Bohm, Schwarber each hit 2-run homers to power Phillies past Reds, 5-1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber each hit two-run homers and Edmundo Sosa added a solo shot to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Phillies starter Ranger Suárez was pulled by manager Rob Thomson after throwing just 80 pitches in five innings. He struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.99, putting the left-hander in prime position to make his second straight All-Star team. Suárez allowed seven earned runs in his first start of the season, and has now allowed only 11 over his last 11 starts. The circumstances of his early exit were not immediately known, Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six innings in all but his first start of the year. Bohm hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Reds starter Nick Lodolo (5-6) for a 3-1 lead and Schwarber connected on his 27th homer of the year in the eighth to make it 5-1. Will Benson hit a solo homer off Suárez for the Reds in the fifth, and Sosa followed with a solo shot in the bottom of half of the inning off Lodolo to make it 1-1. Lodolo struck out eight and allowed three runs over six innings. Jordan Romano (1-3) earned the win and was the first of four Phillies relievers to each toss a scoreless inning. Key moment Cincinnati's first two runners reached in the eighth against Orion Kerkering. Spencer Steer grounded into a double play off the Phillies reliever and Noelvi Marte was retired on a comebacker to end the threat. In a game delayed 71 minutes by rain at the start, Heaney (4-7) held St. Louis hitless until the sixth inning. Heaney threw 6 2/3 innings and gave up three hits (all singles). Shugart threw the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one single while sealing the Pirates' fourth consecutive victory and their sixth win in the past eight games. The Cardinals lost for only the fourth time in their past 14 games and had a three-game winning streak snapped. St. Louis' three most recent defeats were all shutouts. Mariners 6, Royals 2 Randy Arozarena hit two homers and drove in four runs and Cal Raleigh went deep for the major-league-leading 33rd time this season as Seattle defeated visiting Kansas City. Mariners starter George Kirby (2-4) allowed one run on three hits over six innings as the Mariners earned their second victory in a row and their sixth in the past nine games. The Royals lost for the eighth time in nine games. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha (4-8) cruised through the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, before Arozarena went deep to right-center to tie the score at 1-all. Wacha went five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Diamondbacks 4, Giants 2 Alek Thomas had three hits and scored twice, including the go-ahead run on a Geraldo Perdomo single in the seventh inning, and Arizona defeated San Francisco in the opener of a four-game series in Phoenix. After a two-run double by Tyler Fitzgerald drew the Giants even at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, the Diamondbacks pushed across the eventual difference-maker in the bottom of the inning against San Francisco ace Logan Webb. Fitzgerald collected two doubles and Dominic Smith had a double and a single for the Giants, who lost for the sixth time in their past seven games. Athletics 6, Rays 4 Lawrence Butler lined a two-run, tiebreaking triple in the ninth inning as the Athletics won at Tampa Bay. Mason Miller notched his 16th save with a scoreless ninth. Shea Langeliers homered for the A's in his return from the injured list. Junior Caminero bashed a two-run shot for the Rays.
