Pang Ron-Su Yin hope to develop 'own weapons' against China's pairs

KUALA LUMPUR: Hard work is not enough, it requires belief.
That's shuttler Cheng Su Yin's thought on whether she and mixed doubles partner Hoo Pang Ron can bridge the gap with the top Chinese pairs.
Ranked world No. 14, Pang Ron-Su Yin have yet to win a World Tour title. The closest they came was at last year's China Masters, where they finished runners-up.
That result had raised hopes of a breakthrough, but the pair have struggled for consistency since, bowing out early in six out of eight tournaments this year.
Su Yin said China's mixed doublesdominance is not just because of techniques, but also great self-confidence which gives them an edge in crunch situations.
"They really trust their shots. The quality of their shot-control is just on another level," said Su Yin.
"They're confident in everything they do — and that makes a big difference."
Su Yin said the key to beating the top Chinese pairs is not backing down and fight back with weapons of their own.
"Make them feel like we, too, have our own weapons. Maybe that can shake their rhythm a bit."
Pang Ron-Su Yin hope to win a tournament, even a Super 300 title would mean a lot at this stage, to build their momentum for the World Championships in August.
They will compete in the Japan Open (July 15-20), China Open (July 22-27) and Macau Open (July 29-Aug 3).

Ming Hong wins first international title in France

Good start: Shuttler Lim Ming Hong posing with his trophy after winning in France. PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Lim Ming Hong delivered a proud moment for Malaysia after capturing the men's singles title at the Future Series Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France on Sunday (July 6). The professional shuttler was made to work hard for the victory, needing 65 minutes to overcome Taiwan's Huang Yu 22-20, 10-21, 21-16 in a gruelling final. It was the first title for the Ampang Jaya Badminton Club player. The win came as a timely boost for Ming Hong, who was left disappointed after falling short in the Italian Open final in Bolzano last week, where he was beaten by Denmark's Ditlev Holm. Ming Hong also came close to bagging a second title in France in the mixed doubles with Stella Pan but the pair were denied by the Dutch combination of Andy Buijk and Meerte Loos, losing 21-17, 19-21, 18-21 in a closely contested 46-minute duel. Coach Ho Khek Mong was beaming with pride. "Last year, Ming Hong suffered a very bad leg injury which almost ended his career. I'm proud that he didn't give up," said Khek Mong. "He has come through ups and downs. Hopefully, we can guide him to perform at a higher stage, which is the Super 300 and 500 level soon."

Coach hopes to see better chemistry between duo after 'reconciliation'

KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto is concerned about Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei's on court communication after they reunited after a brief breakup. While Nova has no issue with their play, he wants to see better verbal chemistry between Tang Jie and Ee Wei during play. Nova has shifted his attention to the non-technical aspects of the duo's game ahead of the Japan Open (July 15-20), China Open (July 22-27) and Paris World Championships (Aug 25-31). He said that while the world No. 4 pair are technically sound and capable of matching the world's best, their on-court communication remains a concern. The duo briefly broke up in March due to differences and communication issues, but reunited weeks later. Now, Nova wants Tang Jie-Ee Wei to claim a title before the global event to boost their confidence. "These two tournaments before the World Championships are very important. I hope they can win at least one title to build momentum. "I'm focusing on the non-technical aspects of their game, especially their communication, as that was the issue previously," said Nova. Tang Jie-Ee Wei started the year strongly, reaching the semi-finals of the Malaysia and India Opens. However, a first-round exit at the All England in March led to their partnership breaking up before reuniting for the Singapore Open (May 27-June 1), where they lost in the second round. Their most recent result was a semi-final finish at the Indonesia Open last month. Nova acknowledged that the expectations on Tang Jie-Ee Wei to deliver titles are high. "The mixed doubles is the only doubles discipline without a title this year. That should make them more determined to win a title," he said. "If they communicate and manage the non-technical side of their game well, I believe they'll perform."
