After a year of constant training and exhausting all options for giving a reactive dog the best quality of life, one woman came to the "hardest decision" to perform behavioral euthanasia.
Addie and family rescued a dog named Spirit from a shelter and welcomed him home when he was only 6 months old. It took time getting him out of his shell. She told Newsweek via TikTok that he was "very timid and scared," but they worked hard on trying to get him comfortable outside the shelter environment.
However, the older he became, the worse his reactivity got to both dogs and unfamiliar humans. This eventually turned into aggression.
"Many times these incidents led to us getting bitten when we tried to intervene," she said. "We had a reactive dog in the past, so we did know how to deal with this situation."
The family took Spirit to several different trainers; however, each did not have a positive outcome. Then the dog's behavior became unpredictable. Aggression took over at random times, but when it was over, he also looked confused and shaken.
"After over a year of continuous work and trying everything we possibly could, he went after my Shepherd mix, River, one day," Addie said. "He had him full grip in his mouth around the throat, and if I hadn't intervened in time, River wouldn't be here."
That, along with his quality of life, led Addie to decide it was time for behavioral euthanasia. They felt as if they'd exhausted all options and that his suffering became too great for him to be forced to live.

"... we couldn't risk rehoming him because of the risk he could get out and seriously injure a child, person, or animal," she said.
The American Kennel Club defines behavioral euthanasia as the humane way to end a dog's life due to severe behavioral issues linked with aggression that could cause harm to people or other animals. These dogs are "unsafe," with the key issue being their untrustworthiness due to aggression triggers, which can either be clear or unpredictable.
Viewer Reactions
The TikTok video, which reached over 1 million views as of Wednesday, left viewers split on the decision to follow through on behavioral euthanasia, with many unaware this was a common crossroads pet parents experience.
"Please don't ever feel bad/failed him. They were fighting demons in their heads and you freed them," one defended.
Another added: "For everyone in this situation, you did the right thing. Life is too much for some dogs, they don't understand and are scared. You gave him the best life you could, you gave him a peaceful closure to this cruel world."
However, others didn't see it that way. Someone wrote: "There should NEVER EVER be any dog euthanized because of behavior, are children euthanized because of behavior."
A fourth user commented: "Don't agree with this at all. Any dog's behaviour can be fixed with the correct training..."

Woman Renovates Fixer-Upper House—Then Realizes What Was in the Floor

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When Kathleen Martin of New Jersey moved into her new home, what started as a fixer-upper resulted in a mystery that has gained viral attention on Instagram. While documenting the home renovation, Martin captured the moment they found a baffling stain in the center of the living room's hardwood floor. "We noticed the stain when we first toured the house. The hardwood was in rough shape overall so we knew it would need to be refinished," Martin told Newsweek. Pictures of the mysterious stain on the floor that has sparked multiple theories online. "Yep, that's urine," he said. And after the full sand, things were no better as the smell continued. After a closer look at the stain, it became clear that it would need more to fix. "It was a few thousand dollars to patch the stained area, sand, and refinish the rest of the downstairs," Martin said. Despite fixing the floor, the mystery of the cause of the stain remained. "There are theories it may have been a cat or another animal," Martin said. "But it had to have happened over a long period. I know the previous owner's health was declining, so he might not have been able to care for an animal—or himself—properly." "I just said 'the old owner's dog peed a lot on the floor so we had to redo them,' and he said he didn't have a dog," Martin explained in the video. On Instagram, the video has been viewed over 340,000 times and has more than 25,000 likes. The mystery prompted lots of reaction and comments. Shared earlier this week, the caption said: "This was a curveball I wasn't expecting. "The home had been completely emptied when they did the showings so besides the stains we had no indication of who lived there previously. "A few months later we learned that the previous owner was not doing well health wise. We can't be sure where those stains came from but it broke my heart to think of him living in those conditions." "That's terrifying," viewer Deeplymadlymodern commented on the video. While Instagram user Jonathanandjennahome wrote: "The plot twist of all time." First they sanded the floors, then realized they had to be removed. While viewer Bunnmakesstuff said: "I hate to tell you that isn't dog pee.. it's human pee." While the floor story prompted entertainment online, Martin said she hopes the story will also tell an important story. "I do know that the previous owner's health was failing so he may not have been able to care for an animal or himself properly," she said. "It's a good reminder to check in our aging relatives and neighbors." This isn't the first time a renovation has gained viral attention. Earlier this week a couple shared how their fixer-upper ended up with more than they bargained for when they realized whole sections of the house had been built using WWII ammo shell crates—stacked and nailed together as walls. While another couple found that their new home had a hidden building when they started to cut away bushes.

How Generational Emoji Use Creates Communication Confusion At Work

How Generational Emoji Use Creates Communication Confusion At Work If you use emojis at work, you might want to rethink how they're coming across. You might use the clapping emoji to say 'nicely done' or the thumbs-up emoji to show approval, but younger professionals often see them differently. That means your message might not land the way you intended. Just like the word 'cool' is no longer considered cool, emoji meanings keep changing. The thumbs-up symbol was one of the first to draw attention for being misinterpreted, and it's still raising questions. When you add symbols to make a message feel warmer or more expressive, and they get misread, it can lead to confusion or mixed signals. Why The Thumbs-Up Emoji Became A Workplace Issue Why The Thumbs-Up Emoji Became A Workplace Issue The thumbs-up emoji gained widespread criticism in 2022, particularly across Reddit and TikTok, where younger users shared examples of how it made them feel dismissed or shut down. What someone meant as, 'All set,' was interpreted as, 'I don't want to deal with this.' A Perspectus Global survey found that a majority of respondents between the ages of 16 and 29 believed you were 'officially old' if you used a thumbs-up or red heart emoji. Nearly one in four Gen Z professionals viewed the thumbs-up as rude or hostile. As emojis continue to carry emotional weight in workplace communication, it becomes more important to understand how those symbols are being received. What Are The Most Commonly Misread Emojis At Work What Are The Most Commonly Misread Emojis At Work The clapping emoji is one I've used regularly to mean congratulations or well done. But Gen Z often uses it not as a show of support, but as sarcastic emphasis. The smiling face emoji is another that splits the generations. I have used them in my messages to students to ensure they know my tone was intended to be friendly. For younger workers, it can see it as forced, disingenuous, or even condescending. If someone sends critical feedback followed by a smiley face, Gen Z might read it as passive-aggressive rather than thoughtful. The skull emoji is also interesting. Traditionally, it represented death, danger, or horror. Gen Z now uses it to mean they are 'dead' from laughing. It is humor, not morbidity. In a group chat, it might be the equivalent of someone crying with laughter. But if a manager sees it and interprets it literally, that difference can lead to confusion or concern. The OK hand sign has evolved as well. While older generations use it to say 'all good' or 'that works,' younger users sometimes interpret it as dismissive or meaningless. In some online circles, it has even taken on other unintended meanings. Even when used with good intentions, it may no longer read that way. The loudly crying face emoji, the one with a stream of tears flowing, used to be a symbol of deep sadness or grief. In recent years, it has become a favorite for showing extreme emotional responses, including laughter. It is often used dramatically, with exaggerated humor. That difference between serious emotion and playful sarcasm can create major misunderstandings in workplace chats. Why Emoji Use Creates A Bigger Problem Than Just Confusion Why Emoji Use Creates A Bigger Problem Than Just Confusion Most employees are not trying to offend anyone. But, when people misinterpret the tone, they begin to question the intent. The problem is the lack of shared understanding. When one person thinks a message says, 'You did great,' and the other thinks it says, 'I'm annoyed with you,' that is a breakdown in communication. Leaders need to recognize this. Just as they would teach team members how to write professional emails, they should also be talking about tone in digital platforms. Tools like Slack, Teams, or group messaging apps have made emoji use even more popular. That's why it matters even more to address the gap. What You Can Do To Prevent Emoji Issues On Your Team What You Can Do To Prevent Emoji Issues On Your Team Start by creating a space for discussion. Ask your team how they interpret certain emojis. You may be surprised how differently people feel about symbols you thought were universal. Model clear communication. If you use emojis, pair them with wording that makes your meaning unmistakable. A thumbs-up alone might read as abrupt. Saying 'Thanks again for handling that' provides tone. If you want to use a clapping emoji, explain what you're celebrating. That extra sentence makes a difference. Train managers to pause before they hit send. Communication in a multigenerational workplace requires more awareness than it used to. That includes not just what you say, but how you visually deliver it. You Don't Have To Change Your Language Or Emoji Use You Don't Have To Change Your Language Or Emoji Use You don't have to use the same language Gen Z uses to understand what they mean. Let's say someone just finished a big project, and instead of saying, 'Nice work,' I said, 'That redesign was gas. Straight fire. You get a big W for that one. No cap.' I would sound like Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. It's okay to laugh at that. It's also okay to just say, 'Great job on that redesign. Nicely done.' You don't have to talk like someone younger to connect with them. You just need to stay curious about how your tone might land. Curiosity About Emojis Strengthens Communication Curiosity About Emojis Strengthens Communication The way we communicate will keep shifting. Emojis change, tone evolves, and what sounds natural today might feel outdated tomorrow. You do not have to mirror every trend, but paying attention helps. Curiosity about how others express themselves makes conversations clearer and more respectful. When you stay open to how people prefer to connect, you create fewer misunderstandings and build stronger working relationships.

Dog Wakes Up from Life-Saving Surgery, Tears over Reunion with Owner

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog waking up from emergency surgery and immediately giving his owner kisses and cuddles has left the internet fighting back tears. After going out for a walk with his owners, Zeus the pit bull suddenly became sick and could barely move. It was a terrifying experience for his owner Liliana Mejia, 22, who noticed how scared he looked. Zeus was breathing heavily and his eyes were wide. Before long, his back legs stopped moving, as Mejia of Austin, Texas, told Newsweek that it seemed like his "body was giving out beneath him." Mejia and her fiancé got Zeus home safely and tried to ease his pain. "His stomach looked painfully bloated and he couldn't lie down without being in discomfort," Mejia said. "Every time he did, he'd let out this heartbreaking grunt before getting up to pace. We offered him his favorite treat, but he didn't even look at it. That's when we knew something was seriously wrong." Zeus the pit bull after waking up from emergency surgery to treat bloat. Zeus the pit bull after waking up from emergency surgery to treat bloat. @lilimejia21 / TikTok Whenever Mejia moved, Zeus would follow her and stare at her directly. She felt as though he was warning her that something was wrong. It was heartbreaking for Mejia, who said she could "feel his fear and pain" in that moment. Zeus was rushed to the vet where he was diagnosed with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), otherwise known as bloat. He was taken for an emergency gastropexy to prevent the stomach from twisting. GDV is a life-threatening condition in which the stomach becomes dilated with gas and/or fluid, and it becomes twisted. This prevents the gas or fluid from escaping, causing rising pressure in the stomach, while also decreasing blood flow to the stomach tissues. "This was an incredibly emotional moment. We were faced with the heartbreaking possibility that we might have to say goodbye, as GDV can rapidly become fatal. We didn't fully understand the complexity of this surgery, so our hearts felt shattered, filled with fear and uncertainty about the outcome for our beloved boy," Mejia said. Fortunately, Zeus pulled through and was reunited with his owners after waking up from surgery. Although he was groggy and weak, Zeus made sure to shower his owners with love and affection as soon as he awoke. For Mejia, that was a heartwarming reminder that she is Zeus's entire world, and they have such an extraordinary connection. "Even though he was barely aware of his surroundings because of all the medication, he still recognized us—and that was incredibly moving. Being there with him in that moment, offering comfort and love, felt like the most precious gift we could give." Mejia was able to visit Zeus on multiple occasions before he was discharged from hospital. For every moment of those visits, she said his "affection never faded." She captured an adorable clip showing just how loving he was with her following his surgery and shared it on TikTok (@lilimejia21). The clip has melted plenty of hearts online, leading to more than 1 million views and over 255,900 likes at the time of writing. Zeus is back home now and recovering gradually. He's still taking medication and will need to have his stitches removed in the coming days, but he's acting more like himself. For Mejia, she'll never forget how trusting he was immediately after surgery. "Despite the pain and the fog of medication clouding his mind, he kept showing his love in every gesture. Even in his most vulnerable state, he found the strength to reach out and remind me that our connection is unbreakable," she told Newsweek. "Sharing his journey felt important—not just to connect with others, but to raise awareness about how quickly GDV can strike. I am forever thankful for all the kind words from everyone. I firmly believe that without all the prayers and positive thoughts, his outcome might have been very different," Mejia continued. Social media users have been incredibly moved by the video of Zeus after waking up from surgery, leading to more than 3,300 comments on the post so far. One comment reads: "The way he's staring at you and smiling in the beginning." Another person wrote: "He looks so happy to have you there with him." While another TikTok user replied: "So happy to see this. Feel better Zeus." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? We want to see the best ones!
