After a year of constant training and exhausting all options for giving a reactive dog the best quality of life, one woman came to the "hardest decision" to perform behavioral euthanasia.
Addie and family rescued a dog named Spirit from a shelter and welcomed him home when he was only 6 months old. It took time getting him out of his shell. She told Newsweek via TikTok that he was "very timid and scared," but they worked hard on trying to get him comfortable outside the shelter environment.
However, the older he became, the worse his reactivity got to both dogs and unfamiliar humans. This eventually turned into aggression.
"Many times these incidents led to us getting bitten when we tried to intervene," she said. "We had a reactive dog in the past, so we did know how to deal with this situation."
The family took Spirit to several different trainers; however, each did not have a positive outcome. Then the dog's behavior became unpredictable. Aggression took over at random times, but when it was over, he also looked confused and shaken.
"After over a year of continuous work and trying everything we possibly could, he went after my Shepherd mix, River, one day," Addie said. "He had him full grip in his mouth around the throat, and if I hadn't intervened in time, River wouldn't be here."
That, along with his quality of life, led Addie to decide it was time for behavioral euthanasia. They felt as if they'd exhausted all options and that his suffering became too great for him to be forced to live.

The American Kennel Club defines behavioral euthanasia as the humane way to end a dog's life due to severe behavioral issues linked with aggression that could cause harm to people or other animals. She felt as though he was warning her that something was wrong. It was heartbreaking for Mejia, who said she could "feel his fear and pain" in that moment. Zeus was rushed to the vet where he was diagnosed with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), otherwise known as bloat. He was taken for an emergency gastropexy to prevent the stomach from twisting. GDV is a life-threatening condition in which the stomach becomes dilated with gas and/or fluid, and it becomes twisted. This prevents the gas or fluid from escaping, causing rising pressure in the stomach, while also decreasing blood flow to the stomach tissues. "This was an incredibly emotional moment. We were faced with the heartbreaking possibility that we might have to say goodbye, as GDV can rapidly become fatal. We didn't fully understand the complexity of this surgery, so our hearts felt shattered, filled with fear and uncertainty about the outcome for our beloved boy," Mejia said. Fortunately, Zeus pulled through and was reunited with his owners after waking up from surgery. Although he was groggy and weak, Zeus made sure to shower his owners with love and affection as soon as he awoke. For Mejia, that was a heartwarming reminder that she is Zeus's entire world, and they have such an extraordinary connection. "Even though he was barely aware of his surroundings because of all the medication, he still recognized us—and that was incredibly moving. Being there with him in that moment, offering comfort and love, felt like the most precious gift we could give." Mejia was able to visit Zeus on multiple occasions before he was discharged from hospital. For every moment of those visits, she said his "affection never faded." I firmly believe that without all the prayers and positive thoughts, his outcome might have been very different," Mejia continued.
