BHA announces delay to Lord Allen's tenureship

Leader Live30-05-2025
A statement from the ruling body confirmed that Lord Allen will delay taking over at the helm as he wished to continue to meet all stakeholders to 'better inform his vision'.
The statement read: 'Since Lord Allen was named as the new chair of the BHA last November he has engaged in an extensive round of meetings with stakeholders to develop a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the issues facing the sport.
'The BHA can today confirm that Lord Allen will not now start on June 2 as he wishes to continue meeting stakeholders to better inform his vision for the sport and he looks forward to starting his new role once these have concluded.'
Lord Allen, a former chief executive at ITV who was also on the organising committee of the London 2012 Olympics, was announced as the successor to the late Joe Saumarez Smith in November.

‘Luckiest owners ever' switch horses including ‘unbelievable' chaser from Paul Nicholls to Nicky Henderson

HEND GAME It's a notable shift ahead of the new season AN 'unbelievable' horse and serial Cheltenham winner has made a shock stable switch from Paul Nicholls to Nicky Henderson. Ginny's Destiny, owned by Gordan and Su Hall, was second in the 2024 Turners Novices' Chase won by Grey Dawning. 3 3 3 Prior to that he had won three times in a row at the home of jumps, rocketing up the ratings from 133 to 155. With more than £150,000 in career earnings, the nine-year-old has more than paid his way for his popular owners. But the Halls have decided now is the time to move on and have sent him to Henderson instead. The horse's updated page on the BHA showed he moved to the Seven Barrows handler earlier this week. Ginny's Destiny had been with 14-time champion trainer Nicholls since July 2023, having previously been with Tom Lacey for just shy of three years before that. Promising bumper winner Act Of Innocence is another of the Hall horses on his way to Henderson. The five-year-old gelding looks like he could be set for a season novice hurdling after winning at Taunton when last seen in March. Don't Tell Su, a 118-rated hurdler and novice chaser has also gone to Henderson. While £100,000 Old Park Star, who Nicholls bought alongside Tom Malone in June 2023, will now be trained by Henderson too. Gordon, who runs a construction company, and Su have been labelled the 'luckiest owners in racing'. Their first horse together was Truckers Lodge, an eight-time winner who finished second in the 2019 Grand National and won the 2023 London National under Nicholls' expert care. Owners Neil and Alfie Smith have moved Scottish Champion Hurdle runner-up Kabral Du Mathan to Dan Skelton from Nicholls. While the Ditcheat boss has been busy stocking up his squad with some eyecatching purchases, including the hugely promising £260,000 Gold Cast. Henderson is starting to welcome some of his horses back from their summer break. He recently posted a photo of Constitution Hill alongside Sir Gino. Both stars will be on recovery missions in the new season. Constitution Hill looked nothing like the breathtaking Champion Hurdle winner when falling twice last season. While Sir Gino was forced to miss Cheltenham after one of his legs suffered a nasty infection. James Guy hopes to make a splash at another Olympic Games

James Guy is targeting a trip to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles after admitting he has never been happier in his swimming career. The 29-year-old, a six-times Olympic medallist, will head into the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with one eye firmly on LA and retirement currently far from his thoughts. Guy said: 'Yes, 100 per cent LA is in the plan. Obviously I'll be 32, turning 33, but I don't look like I'm going to change much in the next couple of years unless something drastically goes wrong.' A member of the Great Britain 4×200 metres freestyle team which retained its Olympic title in Paris last summer after taking gold at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Guy is one of the nation's most decorated swimmers. Asked what he still had to tick off, he replied: 'Nothing really. I would say just in terms of where I am right now, I'm the happiest I've probably ever been in terms of my swimming career. 'That's why I'm still going, obviously, back on my best again, hitting personal best times. 'I think in terms of athletes of my age, it doesn't really happen that often, so to be where I am right now, really enjoying the sport, I'll try to do for as long as I can.' The British quartet of Guy, Tom Dean, Duncan Scott and Matt Richards face stern competition for top spot on the podium in Singapore with the Americans in impressive form at their trials. They will walk out having been lauded by the crowds at Wimbledon having been invited along with their partners into the Royal Box for the middle Sunday of the tournament. Guy said: 'We had a really good day, had some great seats. The food was fantastic – we ate scones and food all day and had lunch with the chairwoman of the club. I was talking to her and she said that Tom Cruise was in my seat the day before, so it was actually really, really cool.' Asked if he and his team-mates should have been eating scones as they prepares for the World Championships, he replied with a smile: 'I know. I only had a couple. Matt had more than me – he probably didn't tell you that, did he? I had two or three.'

Harry Redknapp's wife Sandra hospitalised as ITV star sends well wishes

Sandra Redknapp was reported to be receiving treatment in hospital Harry Redknapp's wife Sandra is reported to be in hospital. It was revealed by racing commentator Matt Chapman on ITV4 on Thursday night that she is receiving medical treatment as he sent well wishes. ‌ Matt had been reporting live from Great Yarmouth Racecourse where he was speaking about the King of Bears, a horse owned by football legend Harry, which placed sixth in the race. ‌ He then sent his best wishes to the former I'm A Celeb star and his wife as he said: "Sandra, if you're listening in - I think she wanted to watch Emmerdale, but Harry's making her watch this race - I really hope King of Bears runs well. He's a character. He could win it, he could finish last, but he gives Jack Doughty a big chance for George Scott." ‌ Sandra suffered from ill health and struggled to breathe following a Covid battle in 2022. Harry, 78, previously spoke of his worries at the time for his wife, who he has been with since the pair were both just 17. He told the Mirror in 2022: 'The symptoms weren't good, if I'm truthful. You start to think about all kinds of sinister things. ‌ "It's been a real worry. Sandra has suffered. Her voice had packed up and she was struggling for breath. Even swallowing food became difficult. She could choke on food easily if we weren't careful." Santa added: 'You don't realise what your vocal cords do until they're not working, because it affects breathing as well as talking. The shortness of breath was very difficult. My voice would vibrate and was very weak." ‌ Former football manager Harry revealed in 2023 he had no plans to retire from the spotlight, and credited Sandra for the decision. Asked if he was taking a step back, he said: "Not a chance. I can't. I find it hard to say no to things – it drives Sandra mad. Recently, I've done Harry's Heroes for ITV managed in Soccer Aid and last year Jamie and I filmed Jamie and Harry's World Cup Challenge [for Sky Max]. What a laugh that was." Sandra, who previously suffered from ovarian cancer and had a battle with sepsis in 2018 which nearly saw Harry pull out of his planned I'm A Celeb stint, which he'd go on to win. He previously said: "I was terrified I was going to lose her and I nearly didn't get on the plane. But she wasn't having it – she wanted me to go. I'll never forget the moment she came into camp to see me. It was the first time she'd seen me cry." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
