Gold smuggling case in Kerala the ‘biggest govt.-sponsored scam' in the country, says Amit Shah

The Hindu12-07-2025
Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala on Saturday (July 12, 2025), describing the 2020 gold smuggling case as the 'biggest State government-sponsored scam' the entire country has seen. Mr. Shah also reiterated the Narendra Modi government's resolve to end Naxalism by the end of March 2026.
Mr. Shah was addressing ward-level leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Viksit Kerala convention, which also set the stage for the formal launch of the party's campaign for the crucial local body elections scheduled for later this year.
Both the LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which have alternately ruled in Kerala, have a track record of corruption and appeasement and vote bank politics, Mr. Shah said. While the people of Kerala gave them ample opportunities, the two fronts gave in return only violence, corruption, creation of vote banks, appeasement, and the fostering of anti-national elements.
'Countless scams'
The LDF rule has been plagued by countless scams including those related to the cooperative societies, the LIFE Mission, PPE kits and the Exalogic controversy, but the gold smuggling case ranks as the biggest government-sponsored scam, he said. UDF rule, which he described as being on the point of 'winding up,' also has been infested with scams, according to him.
He said that the time is now ripe for the BJP to come to power in Kerala. In the 2025 local body elections, the BJP will contest in over 21,000 wards, with the aim of securing over 25% of the votes. In the 2026 State Assembly elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will seek to come to power in the State, he said.
'In the 2014 elections, Kerala gave 11% votes to the BJP. In 2019 it rose to 16% and in 2024, to 20%. Now it is time for the BJP to make a government here,' he said.
BJP is no more a 'growing party' in Kerala. The party has now considerable reach in every booth in the State, he said. He appealed to the people of the State to stop choosing between LDF and UDF, and vote for the BJP. 'Viksit Kerala' is impossible without the BJP, he said.
On Viksit Kerala
He described corruption-free governance, discrimination-free implementation of government programmes, and holding Kerala's development above vote bank politics as the three foundations of the concept of Viksit Kerala. While both BJP and CPI(M) are cadre parties, the critical difference between them is that the CPI(M) places the development of its cadres above that of Kerala, Mr. Shah said. For the BJP, 'developed Kerala' holds priority over the development of its cadres, he said.
BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who presided, said the party State unit would launch an intense and united 'Mission 2025' campaign over the next four months in the run-up to the local body polls.
Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry George Kurian, party general secretaries M.T. Ramesh, Shobha Surendran and S. Suresh, senior leaders K. Surendran, V. Muraleedharan, P.K. Krishnadas and A.N. Radhakrishnan were among those present. P.C. George, retired IPS officer R. Sreelekha, Padmaja Venugopal and Anil Antony were also present.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Shah inaugurated the new office of the State unit of the BJP 'Mararji Bhavan' near Aristo Junction.

Mehbooba Mufti urges Rahul Gandhi to raise concerns about ‘victimisation of Muslims' in Parliament

Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to raise concerns about the 'victimisation, dispossession and disempowerment' of Muslims during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. Mufti said that Muslims in India had chosen to remain in the country after Partition because of their faith in the Congress leadership. 'Today, as the bearer of that legacy, the responsibility falls on your shoulders to uphold and defend the secular and democratic values enshrined in our Constitution,' she added. The Peoples Democratic Party leader said that the ongoing special intensive revision of voter rolls in Bihar appears to be another 'systemic effort to dispossess, disempower and ultimately disenfranchise Muslims, effectively erasing their presence'. As part of the revision of electoral rolls, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list will need to submit proof of eligibility to vote. Opposition leaders have alleged that the exercise risks disenfranchising a large number of voters as they may not be able to submit the necessary documents. Mufti also referred to reports of India having deported refugees by 'pushing' them into Bangladeshi waters, saying: 'Under the pretext of targeting 'Bangladeshis' and 'Rohingyas', Muslims are being pushed into increasingly desperate situations. Disturbing media reports have even suggested that some were forced into the sea in attempts to expel them from India.' The large scale demolition of thousands of Muslim homes in Assam is deeply troubling, Mufti added. Between 2016 and August 2024, more than 10,620 families – the majority of them Muslim – have been evicted from government land in Assam, according to data provided by the state revenue and disaster management department. Deeply disturbed by the ongoing victimization, dispossession and disempowerment of Muslims on a daily basis - I have written to Rahul Gandhi ji urging him to raise this critical issue in the upcoming Parliament session. — Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) July 21, 2025 Mufti said that while India rightly condemns the treatment of Hindu minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh, there is 'complete silence' when Muslims are targeted in India. 'As a politician from one of the only Muslim-majority regions that chose to join the Indian Union largely due to the vision and secular character of your great-grandfather, I feel extremely helpless at times,' she said. 'Placing great hope in your leadership, I urge you to continue speaking up for a minority that is being steadily marginalised and pushed to the fringes of Indian society.'

Epstein's ex-lawyer urges congress to grant pedo's partner Ghislaine Maxwell immunity in exchange for full testimony

Alan Dershowitz , the prominent attorney who once represented both Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump , is urging Congress to grant Ghislaine Maxwell —Epstein's longtime associate and convicted sex trafficker—full immunity in exchange for her testimony before lawmakers. Dershowitz argues Maxwell "knows everything" about Epstein's criminal enterprise and calls her the "Rosetta Stone" of the case, claiming such testimony could finally unravel key details about the financier's activities and connections with powerful figures. Dershowitz made his appeal on national television over the weekend, telling Newsmax's Sunday Agenda, 'Ghislaine Maxwell is basically serving the sentence that Epstein would have gotten. She should never be in jail for 20 years. What should happen is, she should be free. She should have her sentence commuted. She should then be called in front of Congress. Have Congress give her total immunity, and then she can tell everything she knows. She would have no reason for withholding anything'. Prosecutors established that between 1994 and 2004, she recruited and groomed adolescent girls for Epstein, who then abused them at properties across the country. The case drew fresh public interest after the Department of Justice recently stated there is no so-called 'Epstein client list,' stirring debate about the full reach of Epstein's network and accountability for others who may have been involved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo Dershowitz and Maxwell's legal team maintain she has been unfairly singled out, arguing her conviction is more about the system's failure to prosecute Epstein than her own acts. David Oscar Markus, Maxwell's attorney, said, 'The government says there's no Epstein client list , yet Ghislaine Maxwell remains locked up as the scapegoat for ghosts. It's not right. We are hopeful that she gets some relief [via the Supreme Court] soon'. Calls for Maxwell's testimony before Congress have grown amid mounting demands for transparency in the Epstein case. Dershowitz claims that with 'use immunity,' Maxwell could not be criminally prosecuted for what she reveals, provided she tells the truth, and asserts she is 'willing to testify' under such a deal. Live Events Legal experts and some U.S. lawmakers, however, caution that granting such immunity would be controversial. Critics argue it risks absolving Maxwell of further accountability, while supporters, like Dershowitz, insist her full cooperation is essential for exposing the scope of Epstein's activities, especially as many records remain sealed by federal courts. According to journalist Tara Palmeri, Maxwell may already be assisting law enforcement behind the scenes and is unlikely to serve her full sentence. 'They can't let her out right now, there would be public outrage. But [when] nobody's paying attention, story's gone away, a few years, Ghislaine's out, or ends up in some nice prison. This is what I've been told by law enforcement sources,' Palmeri said. Epstein, who died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial, remains one of the most notorious figures in American criminal history. His case continues to raise questions about elite networks, abuse of power, and access to justice for survivors. Congressional leaders have not yet formally responded to Dershowitz's appeal, but with renewed public attention on Epstein's associates and their knowledge of his crimes, pressure is mounting for decisive action—whether that takes the form of hearings, new investigations, or potentially, bringing Maxwell to Capitol Hill under immunity.

Raj Thackeray's men remove Gujarati display board at Navi Mumbai BJP MLA's office; taken off under police supervision

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena members, along with other political party workers, forced a Gujarat BJP MLA's office, located in Seawoods, Navi Mumbai, to remove a Gujarati signboard on Monday. The signboard was taken down with police presence outside the public relations office of Virendrasinh Bahadursinh Jadeja, who serves as MLA for Rapar constituency in Gujarat, PTI reported. The party had previously issued an ultimatum demanding the board's removal last week. Led by MNS Navi Mumbai City Secretary Sachin Kadam, representatives from Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) organised a demonstration to the NRI Sagari police station. The group submitted their request to authorities, demanding the immediate replacement of the Gujarati board with a Marathi one. They also requested action against those who they claimed had "insulted" Marathi identity. NRI Sagari police station's Senior Inspector Sunil Kadam provided assurance that the disputed board would be removed promptly. Following this assurance, MNS supporters visited the BJP office where the Gujarati plaque was removed under police supervision. The MNS released a statement saying, "In the presence of the police, the Gujarati plaque was removed. And the BJP MLA's worker publicly apologised to all the Marathi people and assured to install the Marathi dais within a few hours."Maharashtra Navnirman Sena
