Trump says Florida's Joe Gruters should run the RNC
Donald Trump wants Florida's Joe Gruters to be the next chairperson of the Republican National Committee. It would be a massive new role for Gruters, a Florida state senator who's long been close to Trump. The current chairperson, Michael Whatley, is likely to run for the open U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina. 'I have somebody who will do a wonderful job as the Chairman of the RNC. His name is Joe Gruters, and he will have my Complete and Total Endorsement,' Trump posted to his social media site Truth Social on Thursday evening. A Gruters win would be a potentially awkward moment for Gov. Ron DeSantis, who sought the presidency in 2024 and could do so again in 2028. The Republican National Committee holds great sway over the party's fundraising strategy, and DeSantis has been a frequent critic of Gruters. Most recently, the two butted heads over Gruters' proposal on immigration that would have made Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson the state's chief immigration officer. In Wednesday post to X, DeSantis called that bill a 'truly contemptible piece of legislation.' Trump had previously endorsed Gruters, of Sarasota, to be the state's next chief financial officer. Jimmy Patronis left the post in November to run for an open U.S. House seat, which he won in March. But DeSantis didn't appoint Gruters to serve out the rest of Patronis' term. He picked Blaise Ingoglia, a state senator and key DeSantis ally in the Legislature. DeSantis seemed to be gearing up for a primary battle between Ingoglia — his preferred candidate — and Gruters. It's possible no such primary will occur. If Gruters wins the Republican National Committee vote, set for Aug. 18-22 in Atlanta, he would abandon his run for Florida CFO, a political spokesperson said.

Nike Saban says Trump's executive order is 'huge step' for college athletes
Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban said that the new executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which seeks to clarify the employment status of collegiate athletes, is a "huge step" in the creation of more opportunities for players. Saban appeared on "Fox & Friends" the day after the order to give his take. Trump's order mandates the U.S. Secretary of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board come up with a plan in the next 30 days to stop athletes from becoming professionals amid the chaos that has reigned in college sports since the implementation of players being able to monetize off their own name, image, and likeness. "The executive order provides a huge step in providing the educational model that has always been what we've sort of tried to promote to create opportunities for players, male and female alike, revenue and non-revenue, so that they can have development as people, students and develop careers and develop professionally if that's what they choose to do," Saban said. Trump's executive order, questions the "balanced use of resources across collegiate athletic programs that preserves their educational and developmental benefits, many college sports will soon cease to exist,' 'It is common sense that college sports are not, and should not be, professional sports, and my administration will take action accordingly," the order said. Saban agreed with the line of thinking and also said that clearing houses and companies are there to authenticate name, image, and likeness. "I think we need to make a decision here relative to do we want to have an education-based model, which I think the president made a huge step towards doing that, or do we want to have universities sponsor professional teams," Saban continued. TikTok reacts to alleged shoplifter detained after 7 hours in Illinois Target
TikTok has become obsessed with an alleged shoplifter who spent seven straight hours in a Target before being detained by security on her way out. Now, people are making pilgrimages to the Target store in Illinois. The woman, a tourist visiting the U.S., allegedly stole approximately $1,300 worth of merchandise from Target on May 1. After body camera footage of her detainment was uploaded to the Body Cam Edition YouTube channel last week, it quickly went viral, thanks in part to her now-infamous defense: 'But if I'm paying for it, what is the harm?' The 20-minute video has since been clipped and shared widely across social media, with segments racking up millions of views. 'How is it even logistically possible for someone to spend seven consecutive hours in one store?' one YouTube commenter asked. 'Do you just walk around in circles?' Some have dubbed her an 'icon,' with videos ranking the 'best moments' from the footage. Others within driving distance of the Target have taken it upon themselves to visit the location, the Daily Dot reported. 'Target lady Target tour,' one TikTok user posted, adding they have nothing better to do. 'A true historical landmark,' another wrote, showing footage of the actual door behind which the woman was detained. Following the viral story, the U.S. embassy in India issued a statement about the Target shoplifter, the Independent reported. 'Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won't just cause you legal issues—it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future U.S. visas,' it stated. 'The United States values law and order and expects foreign visitors to follow all U.S. laws.'
