Domestic assault suspect charged after being shot by officials at Minnesota rest stop

CBS News20-07-2025
A domestic assault suspect shot by law enforcement at a western Minnesota rest stop has been charged.
Todd Ole Burris, 36, of Bemidji, Minnesota, has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, two counts of first-degree assault of a peace officer, two counts of second-degree assault and fleeing, according to the criminal complaint.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says the Becker County Sheriff's Office first responded to a reported assault on July 9 around 5:36 p.m.
According to the complaint, Burris left a home on Highway 21 after assaulting someone, slashing her tires and taking a firearm.
Authorities found Burris's car in Detroit Lakes and attempted a traffic stop, according to the complaint.
Becker County officials say Burris initially stopped his car, before fleeing the area at speeds exceeding 100 mph.
The complaint says Burris pulled into the parking lot of a rest stop on Highway 10 in Frazee, Otter Tail County.
According to the BCA, Burris "partially exited his vehicle" and pointed a handgun at Lieutenant Luke Sweere with the Becker County Sheriff's Office.
"An exchange of fire took place" between Burris, Sweere and Detroit Lakes police officer Philip Vaughn, the BCA said.
Officials initially reported Burris had been shot in both legs, but charges say he was shot in one leg. Officers gave him medical aid before he was taken to a Fargo, North Dakota hospital.
Investigators recovered a handgun and shell casings at the scene.
No law enforcement personnel were injured.
Burris' next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 11.

2 people charged after shots fired at Philadelphia police officers in Carroll Park

Philadelphia police arrested two people after shots were fired at officers, leading to a brief chase and a drug bust in the city's Carroll Park neighborhood Friday evening. On Monday, Assistant District Attorney Amanda Hedrick, with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office's Charging Unit, identified the two people as 30-year-old Nathaniel Smith and 35-year-old Khalil Flowers. Hedrick said Smith is charged with assault of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, firearms charges, possession with intent to distribute, and other offenses. Flowers is charged with recklessly endangering another person, possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy. The charges come after three officers were patrolling in an unmarked police car when they noticed a white Kia speeding and driving erratically near the 5400 block of Morse Street, according to Deputy Commissioner of Investigations Frank Vanore. Vanore said the officers even witnessed the car drive the wrong way down a one-way street. As the officers put on their lights and tried to stop the car, a passenger in the Kia fired two rounds in the direction of the officers, Vanore said. The car then drove around a corner and was forced to stop behind a truck. Three men jumped out of the Kia and tried running away; however, officers chased them down and caught two of them – Smith and Flowers. Police were unable to find the third passenger. Inside the Kia, investigators found a 9mm firearm, two fired cartridge casings and a quantity of narcotics, including crack cocaine and marijuana, according to Vanore. None of the suspects or officers were injured in the incident. Smith is being held on over $1 million bail, and Flowers is being held on $500,000 bail. This investigation is just one element of a busy weekend of gun violence in the City of Philadelphia. Four people, including a mother and two of her children, were shot on Thursday night during a graduation party in North Philly. A mother, her 7-year-old daughter, and two others were then shot in Nicetown on Saturday. Additionally, a man was injured, and shots were also fired at a large gathering in Frankford Saturday night. Four more people were also hospitalized after a shooting near Stokley Street and Roberts Avenue in Philadelphia early Sunday morning. During a press conference on Monday, District Attorney Larry Krasner described the weekend's crimes as disturbing. "We do need to acknowledge that this has not been a great weekend, although we continue to see historic improvements and not just with homicides and not just with shootings, with one category after another of violent crime and nearly all categories of property crimes as well," Krasner said. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said he's proud of the department's work, adding that his officers won't be deterred. "I continue to be proud of the men and women of this Philadelphia Police Department who continue to put their lives on the line for the city of Philadelphia," he said. Sheriff Rochelle Bilal with the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office also condemned the violent weekend at the press conference. "We will not tolerate this kind of violence, and they don't really want this smoke. Gun violence isn't just a police issue; it's a public health crisis," she said.

Several People Injured in Shooting at Reno Casino Resort

Several people were injured in a shooting at a casino in Reno, Nev., early on Monday, and the police and local news media reported that the gunman had been taken into custody. Chris Johnson, a spokesman for the Reno Police Department, told The Associated Press that the adult male suspect involved in the shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino was taken to the hospital and that the conditions of the people who were injured were not immediately known. Mr. Johnson did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday. Devon Reese, a Reno City Council member, said in a telephone interview that he had received reports that at least two people were killed and four people were taken to the hospital, including the shooter. 'My understanding is that there are two reported fatalities,' and four were taken to the hospital, including the shooter, he said. He said three other people were treated: one for anxiety, another for an injury that took place while running from the scene, and one person was shot in the finger. He said he believed the shooting had taken place inside the casino. The police said on social media that there was no threat to the community. Local news broadcasts said that officers responded to the shooting at 7:25 a.m. outside of the resort. News 4 reported that the police found the suspect within 5 minutes, and that an officer-involved shooting occurred outside. This is a developing story.
