BMW To Slash 2026 IX3 Emissions Using 740kg Of Reused Materials

Forbes10 hours ago
It will take less than a year of driving for the upcoming 2026 BMW iX3 to wipe out its production CO2 deficit to an equivalent combustion-powered car, the Bavarian automaker claims.
BMW has gone all-in on both renewable energy and re-used raw materials to make its all-new iX3 cleaner, faster than any BEV before it, plus the SUV uses 20% less energy to drive than the current car.
With an astonishing 740kg of recovered raw materials, fully one third of the iX3 50 xDrive's total mass will be made of pre-used aluminium, thermoplastics and other discarded materials.
The result is the cleanest BMW electric vehicle ever made, before it even turns a wheel, with reused secondary materials now used in stressed components for the first time.
'It's a win-win,' BMW's Head of Sustainability Vehicle Projects Juergen Froeschl said.
'We keep plastics and metals out of the seas and landfills, and they take less processing energy to create the raw material,' Froeschl said.
'And these days the quality is comparable to a 100% primary material, at a much lower CO2 cost.' The electric SUV's wheel carriers use a 70% mix of recycled aluminum, and the wheels are up to 80%, giving those parts an 85% reduction in production CO2.
The entire interior plastic mix contains material from 140 PET bottles (which can be 100% recycled to automotive-grade material), while 30% of the material mix of the 58-liter 'frunk' is made of recycled fishing nets from the south of France.
Built in an all-new, flagship green plant in Drebecen, Hungary that emits just a third of the traditional CO2 to build a car, the iX3 is the first of what BMW calls its 'Neue Klasse' (New Class') of BEVs.The iX3 could have gone even higher and harder on secondary materials mix if the supply could be guaranteed, according to BMW's Head of Sustainability Vehicle Projects Juergen Froeschl.
'If the quality of the secondary material can be guaranteed, you can do it much higher, but it's limited by the availability of the secondary material,' Froeschl said.
'All our engineering stress specifications are untouched. What's changed is the quality of the raw material we can be supplied, so we now use this on stressed parts as well.
'We can now do this with no change to the chemistry. With aluminum, we improved our competence with it so we know what to do to achieve the maximum acceptable limit.
'We did not change the recycling process. We know a very great deal about the benefits and the limits of corrosion and fatigue.'
Production upgrades and recycled materials mean the Neue Klasse's sixth-generation cylindrical battery cells emit an astonishing 42% fewer CO2 emissions than the Gen 5 cells in the current iX3.
BMW insists that 90% of a BEV's supply-chain CO2 comes from just four sources: the battery cells, aluminium, steel and thermoplastics.
But the battery stands out, at 50% of all supply-chain CO2.
BMW claims it has pulled a 35% CO2 reduction from its 2700 tier-one suppliers.
'The battery is half the production CO2 cost of the car, and our Neue Klasse battery cells use 42% less carbon per Watt hour than the current iX3,' Froeschl said.
'The materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel are all 50% secondary raw materials, and we use renewable energy to make the anode and cathode, and the Future Sustainable Car Materials Group is working on making it even higher.'The new Debrecen plant delivered BMW a claimed two-thirds reduction in CO2 emissions per car, down to just 0.1 tonnes from production.
Designed from the ground up to be a renewable flagship and to minimise reliance on grid energy, it even has BMW's first fully electric paint shop.
There's an on-site solar farm providing a third of the plant's total energy requirements, and any excess solar energy is stored in an 1800 cubic-metre thermal-energy unit.
The 2026 BMW iX3 isn't just made from reused materials. It's designed to eventually provide them.
While the interior contains 140 PET bottles, the recycled-material mix has an unusual limitation: smell.
But BMW has found a way around that, and the Econeer seat material uses the same PET-sourced raw material to create the yarn, the glue and the fleece.
'End of life dismantling is easier and more efficient with monomaterial parts. It's the same material for three different things, so this can be recycled 100% and recreated into autograde materials.'

RB Leipzig receive improved offer from Newcastle United for Benjamin Sesko

Red Bull Leipzig have received an improved offer from Newcastle United to sign Benjamin Sesko. An opening bid worth €75million plus €5million in add-ons was deemed insufficient by Leipzig, leading Newcastle to raise that to at least €80m. Sesko is also wanted by Manchester United, but a proposal has yet to arrive from Old Trafford and the figures they have indicated a willingness to pay are lower than those of Newcastle at present. Advertisement That leaves the St James's Park side in a strong position as things stand, after a day of positive talks held by their co-owner Jamie Reuben with Leipzig and the 22-year-old striker. Nothing is agreed yet and there is currently no guarantee of the outcome, which could still be Sesko staying if Leipzig do not accept a deal. The Slovenia international's preference will be crucial — however Leipzig have no intention of settling for a fee below their expectations to grant that, meaning both suitors must reach the required level in order to close the transfer. Newcastle have a long-standing interest in the 22-year-old forward and The Athletic reported on July 24 that the Premier League club were considering a move for him in the event that Alexander Isak leaves the club. The Sweden international wants to leave St James' Park this summer and has been training at his former club, Real Sociedad, while Eddie Howe's squad are on a pre-season tour of Asia. Liverpool had a formal £110m bid for Isak rejected on Friday, as revealed by The Athletic, but the Premier League champions retain a strong interest in the forward, having initially expressed an interest in doing a deal in the region of £120m last month. Sesko has been the subject of interest from several clubs this summer after scoring 21 goals in all competitions for Leipzig last season. Manchester United are also interested in signing the Slovenian and are prioritising him if they are to sign another striker this summer. Arsenal had been monitoring Sesko before they completed the €63.5million (plus €10m) signing of Viktor Gyokeres. Chelsea had admired Sesko for several years but opted to sign Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer. Sesko signed a new contract with Leipzig last year which runs through to 2029, with his deal expected to include a gentleman's agreement allowing him to leave for the right project. He has recorded 39 goals and eight assists in 87 appearances for the German club since signing of RB Salzburg in 2023, with both clubs owned by the Red Bull GmbH conglomerate. The striker has also scored 16 goals in 41 appearances for Slovenia, and represented his country at last year's European Championships. Analysis by German football writer Seb Stafford-Bloor Reasonably well, but it was not the season he needed to produce to assuage the doubts. While his overall level of performance improved in the broader sense, with Sesko becoming more connected with the rest of the Leipzig side, his goalscoring numbers were down. He scored one fewer Bundesliga goal (13) in 2024-25 than he did the year before, despite playing almost an extra 900 minutes. He was never able to replicate that seven-game streak from the previous year, either, meaning that it felt underwhelming as a result, despite some eye-catching goals (particularly against Bayern Munich at the Red Bull Arena). Advertisement But Leipzig had a bad season. They sacked Marco Rose in March, limped to their lowest finish since being promoted to the Bundesliga in 2016 and only won one game of their eight Champions League games. That's valuable context. Nevertheless, consistency was still an issue for Sesko and the gap between his best performances and his worst, which is a historic criticism, remains too wide.

The Only Red RUF CTR1 ‘Yellowbird' Could Fetch $5 Million at Monterey Car Week

The RUF 'Yellowbird' is a revered supercar with prices to match and examples regularly going for mid-seven-figure prices. That's even for this Bordeaux Red one, which could fetch $5 million at Monterey Car Week. The Bordeaux Red RUF CTR1 'Yellowbird' is one of six Lightweight versions made, of 29 RUF CTR1 'Yellowbirds' total. The rest, of course, were yellow, but this example was different, sometimes called the 'Redbird.' It was, for a while, Alois Ruf's personal car. Around 11,745 miles are on the odometer. Its rarity can not be questioned, nor can its authenticity, with RM Sotheby's saying it has its original 3.4-liter twin-turbo flat-six and various documents, including a RUF certificate. The RUF CTR1 'Yellowbird' first became famous for using all that power and lightweight construction to go 211 mph in a testing by Road & Track that was published in 1987. That is, indeed, a fast number for any time in automotive history, but also beat out the giants of the day, including the Porsche 959, AMG Hammer, and Ferrari F40. This 1989 RUF CTR1 'Yellowbird' Lightweight is said to have been ordered by a German doctor, and the Lightweight trim was for the true sickos. The car had no roll cage, aluminum body panels instead of steel, no power brakes, no sunroof, and no radio, among other weight-reducing moves. This example was further customized by the car's first owner, with a different suspension, six-point harnesses, custom telemetry, power windows, a heated windshield and rear window, chrome trim, and a unique Pfaffenhausen hood badge. There was no roll cage, either, but RM Sotheby's notes that 'original mounting plates remain intact and ready for immediate use,' if the new owner wants to install one. The car has spent time in Germany, Austria, Belgium, and, now, America. It will go up for auction on August 16 in Monterey, and comes at a time when Yellowbirds are flying pretty high in the secondary marketplace. One example sold for over $6 million earlier this year, and while the Redbird may not fetch as much, it will very likely be in the of Robb Report The 2024 Chevy C8 Corvette: Everything We Know About the Powerful Mid-Engine Beast The World's Best Superyacht Shipyards The ABCs of Chartering a Yacht Click here to read the full article.
