T.N. Governor has not changed despite Supreme Court verdict, is sitting on Kalaignar University Bill: CM Stalin

The Hindu16-06-2025
Stating that Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi is yet to give assent to the Bill adopted by the State Assembly proposing the establishment of Kalaignar University at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Monday (June 16, 2025) observed that Mr. Ravi has not changed even after the Supreme Court verdict (on the Governor's powers to grant assent to Bills).
The decision to name the new university after the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was taken by the elected MLAs, cutting across party lines, on the floor of the Legislative Assembly. The Bill was adopted unanimously and was sent to the Governor for his assent. But even after 40 days, the Governor has not given his assent till now, despite several reminders, Mr. Stalin said, while speaking at a government function in Thanjavur.
The Chief Minister said attempts to take up the matter with the Governor through the Minister for Higher Education did not materialise as the Governor is yet to grant an appointment for the Minister. Had the Governor granted assent to the Bill, the foundation stone for the new university could have been laid today along with other new projects. 'We will wait with patience; if we run out of patience, we will force the Governor to give in,' Mr. Stalin asserted.
The State government was executing its duties without fail, despite the Union government's partiality in allocation of funds, Mr. Stalin said. He announced that a new scheme, christened, Ungaludan Stalin would be launched on July 15, wherein special camps would be organised to receive petitions from the public and take government schemes and services to the doorstep of the people .
While 3,768 camps would be organised in urban areas, 6,232 camps would be held in rural areas. Women eligible to avail assistance under the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai scheme can submit their applications at the camps.
A team of volunteers would be visiting every household to guide the people on how to apply for the welfare and other schemes implemented by the government and guide them in filing applications and uploading documents to be submitted to avail the benefits, he added.
Making a special reference to the Sarasvati Mahal Library in Thanjavur, the Chief Minister said sufficient funds would be allotted in addition to the allocation of ₹75 lakhs per annum for the upkeep of manuscripts and other treasures at the library and creation of additional infrastructure facilities apart from ensuring distribution of pension to the retired staff. The library's heritage buildings would be renovated by the Public Works Department at a cost of ₹12.50 crore.
Mr. Stalin announced that the kuruvai special package scheme would be implemented in the delta districts at an outlay of ₹82.77 crore. He inaugurated 2,461 projects implemented at a cost of ₹3,25.96 crore in Thanjavur district, laid foundations for 4,127 projects worth ₹309.48 crore and distributed assistance under various welfare schemes to the tune of ₹558.43 crore to 2,25,383 beneficiaries in Thanjavur district.

SC agrees to examine plea to repeal Bodh Gaya temple law

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine a plea for repealing the Bodh Gaya Temple Act, 1949 and replacing it with a central law for the proper control, management and administration of Mahabodhi temple in Bihar. The Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bihar's Bodh Gaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the four holy areas related to the life of Lord Gautam Buddha. Bodh Gaya is a place where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. The plea, which has also challenged the validity of the 1949 Act, came up for hearing before a bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh. The petitioner's counsel said a plea with identical prayers was pending in the apex court. The bench issued notice to the Centre and others seeking their responses on the petition and tagged it for hearing along with the pending plea. The plea has sought to declare the 1949 Act as unconstitutional alleging it was "inconsistent" with Article 13 of the Constitution. Article 13 relates to laws inconsistent with or in derogation of the fundamental rights. The petition has also sought a direction to the authorities concerned to remove encroachments made in the premises of the Bodh Gaya temple for the exclusive worship of Buddhists around the world in order to manage, control and administer the religious, faith, belief and worship in the interest of justice. On June 30, the apex court refused to entertain a separate plea challenging the vires of the 1949 Act and asked the petitioner to moved high court concerned. The 1949 Act relates to the better management of the temple. The Mahabodhi Temple Complex comprises a 50-metre high grand temple, the Vajrasana, the sacred Bodhi tree and six other sacred sites of Buddha's enlightenment, surrounded by numerous ancient votive stupas, well maintained and protected by inner, middle and outer circular boundaries. A seventh sacred place, the Lotus Pond, is located outside the enclosure to the south. Both the temple area and the Lotus Pond are surrounded by circulating passages at two or three levels, and the area of the ensemble is 5 metres below the level of the surrounding land.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin condemns Delhi police's description of Bengali as a Bangladeshi language

Stalin said that in the face of such an assault on non-Hindi languages, Banerjee was standing as a shield for the language and the people of West Bengal. 'She will not let this attack pass without a fitting response,' he added. Banerjee, in her post, referred to a letter from Inspector of Police of Lodhi Colony station in New Delhi regarding the arrest of eight persons suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India. The letter sent to Banga Bhawan, the office of the resident commission of the West Bengal government in Delhi, requesting translation, said, "The identification documents contain texts written in Bangladeshi and need to be translated to Hindi and English." Banerjee had said that describing a language spoken by crores of Indians and sanctified by the Constitution as Bangladeshi is scandalous, insulting, anti-national, and unconstitutional. 'This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all,' she said.
