Alternate NFL universe: What if Tennessee Titans traded No. 1 overall pick?

Now that the NFL is in the home stretch before training camp, it's always fun to look back at some of the what-ifs that were spawned from rumors throughout the offseason. Whether it was phantom free agent signings or trades that never developed, there were quite a few storylines that could have been, but never came to fruition. The Tennessee Titans sat at the center of a few of those, but none more so than the mystery surrounding the first overall selection and whether they would stay put and make the selection. At one point, immediately after the NFL Scouting Combine, it appeared as if trading away the pick was a foregone conclusion, but in the end, they stayed at No. 1 and selected Cam Ward, and the rest is history. Cody Benjamin wondered the same thing and listed the potential trade of the first overall pick as one of the five what-ifs that could have changed the face of the NFL in 2025 and beyond. Cam Ward to the Giants Embattled general manager Joe Schoen lived up to his promise to "look under every rock" for quarterback help this offseason, adding not one but three new passers in Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart. The thing is, he may have settled for just one, had he gotten his wish. After failing to acquire Stafford in a blockbuster trade, Schoen's Giants were reported as front-runners to land the No. 1 pick in the draft, with Miami's Cam Ward the anticipated target. What if the Tennessee Titans hadn't been smitten with Ward -- or just so desperate for their own new signal-caller -- and actually dealt the top pick to Big Blue? We might be preparing for Ward to open the 2025 season as the new face of the Giants with head coach Brian Daboll finally set to deploy a gunslinger with long-term promise. Although no official details were released, NFL insiders reported that the Titans declined an offer from the New York Giants for the top pick. This means that the Giants did not meet the requirements of the historic haul that general manager Mike Borgonzi was searching for. Ward has been everything that the Titans expected since landing in Nashville, and there is no doubt he would have made the same impact if he had made his way to New York. The Giants eventually took Jackson Dart, but Ward would have been a no-brainer. He was the top quarterback in the class, and with his college experience and football acumen, he appears ready to take over the offense. Had the Titans traded out of the spot, it is likely that their entire draft strategy would have changed, and that Abdul Carter would have been the selection. This also means that they would likely be riding with Will Levis as the starter heading into the season. While fans may freak out with that proposition, Levis has had a tremendous offseason and looks like a different quarterback. The extra work he put in with Jordan Palmer appears to have paid off. What they would have done with the rest of the selections, and what those selections would have been, may be a mystery. Still, they would not have selected Femi Oladejo in the second round if they had taken Carter, and their haul would have been entirely different. Looking back, if he had gone to New York, Ward would have made for an interesting competition between Russell Wilson during the offseason and training camp. Instead, he is in Nashville preparing to be the face of the franchise. Now that the dust has settled, Titans fans are excited that this was a what-if and not a reality.

Shohei Ohtani is back on the mound Saturday. Here's how to watch his third start of 2025

Another Shohei Ohtani start goes down on Saturday. OK, it's happening, everybody stay calm! We reserve the right to react like this each time Ohtani pitches, because menacing MVP batsmen are not supposed to also throw 100 MPH. The reigning MVP leads the National League in runs, homers, OPS and offensive WAR. He'll also be his team's opener on Saturday, taking the hill for his first road start as a Dodger. In two innings of work this year, Ohtani has allowed one run on two hits. Start No. 1 started shakily. Facing division rival San Diego, the right-hander allowed immediate singles to Padres stars Fernando Tatís Jr. and Luis Arráez. He threw a wild pitch and watched Tatís score on a sac fly. He settled down and limited the damage, but the rust was evident. Start No. 2 was far stronger: a scoreless inning against the Washington Nationals, with two Ks on 12 strikes in 18 pitches. Advertisement He now goes against a middling Kansas City offense. The Royals enter the day as losers of six straight games, including a 5-4 loss to the Dodgers on Friday night. They rank a dismal 29th in the league in home runs and 27th in on-base percentage. Bobby Witt Jr. is still shining in his age-25 season, leading MLB in doubles and on pace for 40 steals. The shortstop is batting .277 — a respectable mark, though nowhere near last year's robust .332. Elsewhere, third baseman Maikel Garcia tops the lineup in all three slashing lines, and first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino has some pop in his swing. That's about it. Remarkably, zero Royals are projected to reach 100 RBIs this season. Ohtani will be opposed by Seth Lugo (4-5, 2.93 ERA). He's in the 85 percentile for breaking ball run value, but is at the back of the pack for velocity and whiff rate. Los Angeles' Freddie Freeman is 5-for-16 lifetime against Lugo, and Mookie Betts is 3-for-7. Babe Ruth, 1930: 'Though too late to be of much practical benefit to the Yankee cause this year, Babe Ruth today stepped to the pitching mound for the first time in a decade, and in the season's closing game with the Boston Red Sox, demonstrated to 12,000 visibly and audibly impressed fans that the mighty left arm which made him a World Series factor for the Red Sox in 1916 and 1918 still retains something of its power.' — William E. Brandt Bob Gibson, 1967: 'Gibson, who was wearing a red jacket and sipping an orange drink while sitting in the unhappy St. Louis Cardinals' dressing room this afternoon, said: 'Rest is something that's not too important at this stage. You'll find a little extra- somewhere.' The 31-year-old pitcher from Omaha, who already had won two games in the World Series, suddenly found himself in the position of having to win No. 3 to prevent the Boston Red Sox from ending their incredible adventures as world champions.' Advertisement In that Game 7 start, Gibson threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts … and belted a homer in the fifth inning. Mike Hampton, 2000: 'See Mike Hampton pitch. See Mike Hampton bat. See Mike Hampton field. See Mike Hampton sweat in the dugout before the Mets complete a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Just seeing Hampton in a Mets uniform should be enough for Shea Stadium fans because he offered no objections to the trade that brought him to New York. Not that he had a choice when the deal was made with Houston last winter, but the good guys get credit no matter what the circumstances.' Shohei Ohtani's pitching return sees insane 71% ticket prices jump

The post Shohei Ohtani's pitching return sees insane 71% ticket prices jump appeared first on ClutchPoints. On a wild Sunday in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers made waves by revealing Shohei Ohtani would make his return to the mound on Monday night. Advertisement Ohtani will make his first start since August 23, 2023 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. It'll be the first time he takes the mound as a member of the Dodgers and ticket prices are reflecting that. The average ticket price for Monday's Dodgers game against the San Diego Padres is $192, up 71% since it was announced, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Yates also says, per TickPick, the Dodgers sold four-times more tickets to the game compared to before. Though the Dodgers say Ohtani is not yet built up to be a full starter, he can function now as a multi-inning opener and go from there. He has been recovering from UCL surgery, functioning as a full-time DH last year and so far this year. Ohtani has been building up without pitching in rehab games, continuing to bat in the Majors for the reigning World Series champions. He began facing live batters in late May as his ramp-up accelerated. Advertisement 'The live, simulated or whatever sort of ran its course,' manager Dave Roberts told the media on Sunday. 'He's ready to make his debut on the mound.' Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani remains one of the game's elite hitters Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Ohtani is coming off consecutive MVP campaigns, which included a 2024 season that was one of the best all-around seasons by a hitter ever. He became the only 50-50 player in baseball history, hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases, all while leading the league in runs scored, RBI, on-base percentage and OPS. He hasn't missed a beat in 2025. Ohtani hasn't been as active on the basepaths with only 11 steals, but he's leading the National League in home runs (25) while maintaining his league-leading status in runs scored and OPS. Advertisement Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Ohtani expressed excitement about going back to being a two-way player. 'I do feel like just being the two-way player I used to be is the norm,' he said. 'Last year was the abnormal year for me, and it's about getting back to what I used to do.'
