BMW X5 to gain range extender EV option
Range extenders have gained popularity there as they allow for primarily EV operation during regular commutes, and freedom from range anxiety and worrying about charging infrastructure during road trips.
According to
Autocar
, BMW is working with transmission specialist ZF on a range extender setup for the new
X5
with a target total range of over 965km (600 miles).

Given the upcoming second-generation
X7
will once again be closely related to the new X5, it's no surprise BMW will also add a range extender option to its flagship SUV.
The Bavarian automaker is also considering adding range extender drivetrain options to the current
X3
. The next-generation X5 and X7, as well as the existing X3, are all based on BMW's CLAR architecture, which supports mild hybrid petrol and diesel engines, as well as traditional plug-in hybrid, and pure EV drivetrains.
If this report proves to be true, it will be the first time range extender option in a BMW since the demise of the i3 tall-boy hatchback (below).
In all i3 models an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack was solely responsible for driving the wheels. For the REx (range extender) variants a 0.65L two-cylinder petrol engine making just 25kW, and a small 9L fuel tank were added to the vehicle.
Whenever the i3's battery ran low or hit a preset level, the little petrol engine would sputter to life and recharge the traction battery.
It's unclear what type of what type of engine BMW is considering of the X5 range extender. We also don't know whether the range extender option will be offered in addition to or as a replacement for the X5's plug-in hybrid setup.
In a traditional plug-in hybrid drivetrain, both the electric motor can drive the wheels by itself or in tandem with the petrol engine.
The sixth-generation X5 was last spotted by
our spy photography agency back
in June 2024. From those photos we can see it has a nose heavily inspired by the
Vision Neue Klasse X
, which has angled headlights and slim double kidney grilles.

Driver crawls out of flipped BMW wreckage in Western Sydney
A man has crawled out of the wreckage of his BMW after it lipped onto its roof in a crash. The BMW Coupe was left crushed nearly flat to the doors after a crash along Edensor Rd at St Johns Park in Western Sydney about 12.20am on Sunday. During the crash, the car allegedly failed to navigate a roundabout and mounted a kerb, then lifted off the ground, overturned and landed upside down. The 38-year-old driver managed to crawl out of the wreckage on his own. He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Liverpool Hospital. NSW Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The BMW i8, a 2017 model, is valued around $100,000.

Vince McMahon involved in car crash
Vince McMahon was involved in a car crash last week. The WWE co-founder was issued a misdemeanour summons for reckless driving and following too closely resulting in an accident after the vehicle he was driving went into the back of another car before hitting a guardrail. The incident happened in Connecticut at around 9am last Thursday (24.07.25) and according to a crash report obtained by TMZ, the 79-year-old businessman was travelling northbound on Route 15 in Westport when his 2024 Bentley ran into the back of a 2023 BMW 430 before hitting a median wooden-beam guardrail. Debris from the collision then flew into the left side of the two-lane road, and a third vehicle, a southbound Ford Fusion then ran into it. The force of the impact was so severe, the airbags were deployed on both Vince's car and the BMW and all three cars had to be towed from the scene. All three drivers were wearing seatbelts and no major injuries were reported, though the guardrail suffered around 30 feet of damage. Photos from the scene of the accident showed the car belonging to Vince - who will appear in court next month - sustained severe damage on both sides near the front wheels, while the driver-side fender was scraped, dented and detached, and glass from a rear tail light was missing. The accident happened the same day that Vince's friend, Hulk Hogan, died at the age of 71, and he later paid tribute to the wrestling legend. He wrote on X: 'The world lost a treasure today. Hulk Hogan was the greatest WWE Superstar of ALL TIME, someone who was loved and admired around the world. "He was a trailblazer, the first performer who transitioned from being a wrestling star into a global phenomenon. "His grit and unbridled thirst for success were unparalleled - and made him the consummate performer. "He gave everything he had to the audience whom he appreciated, respected and loved. 'He leaves us with one of his favorite expressions, 'Train, take your vitamins and say your prayers.' Today, we pray for him.' Vince stepped down as CEO and chairman of WWE in June 2022 amid an investigation over allegations he had paid a former employee $3 million to hide their affair. The investigation ended in November that year, and the following January he was unanimously elected executive chairman of the board. However, he resigned from WWE's parent company, TKO Group Holdings, a year later after he was sued by ex-employee Janel Grant for "physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault and trafficking", allegations which he denied.

Cheaper Hyundai Ioniq 2 EV spied testing ahead of official reveal
Hyundai already has a small electric SUV with the Kona Electric, but it's working on another that's set to go on sale in 2026. According to UK publication Autocar, Hyundai has confirmed it will reveal an unnamed electric crossover in the next few months which will hit Europe showrooms in late 2026. The unnamed crossover is believed to be the Hyundai Ioniq 2 five-door small SUV caught testing in Europe ahead of its official reveal, the timing suggesting it will be on display at the Munich motor show in Germany this September. The Ioniq 2 is expected to face a swag of circa €30,000 ($A53,618) electric rivals in Europe, including the Renault 5 E-Tech and upcoming Volkswagen ID.2. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. The Ioniq 2 was reportedly developed alongside the EV2 small electric SUV – all but ruled out for Australia – from sister brand Kia. Having just launched the Ioniq 9 flagship electric SUV in Australia – its most expensive car ever – the Ioniq 2 will join the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan as the fourth model in the Ioniq EV range. Hyundai has previously said it intends to introduce Ioniq EV models from 1 to 9, with each higher number corresponding to an increase in size. There's little official information on the Ioniq 2 so far, which beyond a reference to an unnamed electric crossover is yet to be officially confirmed by the automaker. Based on the naming strategy, the Ioniq 2 will sit above the funky Hyundai Inster EV, a city-sized urban hatch based on the Picanto platform from sister brand Kia, but below the Kona EV in terms of size and price. That means the Ioniq 2 should sit between the top-priced Inster Cross – priced at $45,000 before on-road costs – and the entry level Kona Electric's $54,000 list price in Australia. The Ioniq 2 is also expected to use a version of the dedicated electric E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) shared with the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 as well as the Genesis GV60 from the company's luxury division. A low-cost version of the platform, similar to the Kia EV3 's underpinnings, could also bring its 400V charging capability and choice of 58.3kWh and 81.4kWh lithium-ion batteries. The Australian-spec EV3 has a range of up to 604km and a maximum DC charge rate of 127kW. Autocar has suggested a 'step change' in design for the Ioniq 2's cabin, including new infotainment which is expected to be combined with the driver's digital instruments. Now EV-only, the Ioniq name was previously used on a five-door hatch sold in Australia between 2018 and 2022 offered with a Toyota Prius -rivalling hybrid powertrain as well as a battery-electric version and a plug-in hybrid.
