Hemavathi link canal meeting postponed: Karnataka deputy CM Shivakumar
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 26 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Thursday that the meeting on the Hemavathi link canal, originally scheduled for June 30, has been postponed to July 4-5, following a request from Union Minister V Somanna.
Speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence here, Shivakumar said, 'We have postponed the meeting as Somanna is also the MP from the district. The officials have been instructed accordingly.'
The Deputy CM also addressed the postponement of a meeting with Yettinahole project contractors in Tumakuru, attributing it to the absence of Home Minister G Parameshwar. 'The meeting will now be held in Bengaluru tomorrow or the day after,' he said.
Shivakumar emphasised the government's commitment to completing the Yettinahole project on time. 'The CM has instructed us to finish the project within the stipulated period, so we are reviewing problem areas. We are exploring options to store water in Koratagere taluk--whether a new dam is needed or if existing reservoirs can be utilised,' he explained.
When asked about his meeting with MLA BR Patil, Shivakumar, who is also the KPCC president, said, 'As party chief, I need to understand ground realities. We will discuss issues with the CM and Housing Minister.'
Reacting to questions about dissent within the government, he dismissed the notion, calling it 'a media creation.'
Later, while laying the foundation for the Rs 50-crore Matada Halla lift irrigation project in Gubbi, Shivakumar urged people to avoid conflicts over water. 'We all belong to one state. Fighting over water is unnecessary--everyone's interests will be safeguarded,' he said, referring to disputes over the Hemavathi link canal.
He also took a dig at former CM HD Kumaraswamy, stating, 'Kumaraswamy said lifting Yettinahole water was impossible, but we made it happen. We are resolving forest land issues and planning dams in Koratagere and Doddaballapur to store water. Without storing at least 3 TMC, we cannot supply water to Chikkaballapur and Kolar.'
Shivakumar praised the Visvesvaraya Jala Nigam for its 10-km aqueduct project, calling it a significant achievement. (ANI)

The central government, on the other hand, also spends huge amount on several welfare schemes such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Kisan, PM Awas Yojana and PM Poshan. The central government has allocated Rs 86,000 crore for MNREGA that too only for this year. What Kind Of Warning Is This? Crisil has warned that increased state spending on welfare programs, particularly those targeting women, children, and marginalised groups, will widen their revenue deficits. This surge in spending, consistent with previous years at 1.4 to1.6 percent of GSDP between FY19 and FY24 will likely curtail states capacity for capital investment. The rise in expenditure is attributed to pre-election initiatives, including income support schemes and free public transportation for women. What Is Needed To Defeat China? To overtake China economically, India has to take concrete and far-sighted steps rather just spending on social welfare schemes. Focus on productive investments India should focus on creation of world-class infrastructure like roads, railways, ports, power, digital connectivity. These developments will reduce logistics costs and boosts industries. Investments in education, healthcare, and skills development is also needed to create a skilled and healthy workforce. India has to work on increasing public and private investment in research and development. This will promote innovation. Notably, China has invested big in this. Development of the manufacturing sector China's robust manufacturing sector significantly contributes to its economic growth. India's economic progress requires bolstering initiatives like 'Make in India' by streamlining manufacturing establishment, offering tax benefits, and enhancing global supply chain integration. Emphasis on exports China has an export-oriented economy. India also needs to expand its export base in high value-added goods and services. Policy stability A stable policy environment is essential to attract investors. Improving the ease of doing business will automatically reduce red tape. Financial discipline Both the states and the Centre must keep the fiscal deficit under control. This will reduce debt and increase revenue.

Railways face glitz or safety option
A fatal accident and a major project delay has reignited issues that have plagued the Indian Railways. Earlier this month, as many as 5 Mumbai commuters were killed when two overloaded trains travelling in opposite directions came dangerously close on a turn between two suburban stations. Those hanging out on footboards brushed each other and many fell off. In an unrelated development, three giant-sized tunnel boring machines (TBMs), on order to drill an underground route for a 21-kilometre stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, have been held up at a Chinese port. The ground breaking ceremony for the project was performed way back in September 2017 by Prime Minister Modi and then Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. However, issues mainly related to land acquisition have slowed the project. Now, the TBMs have added to the delay. Built in Guangzhou, China by German tunnelling specialist Herrenknecht, they were to reach India by October 2024, but clearance from the Chinese authorities has not come. Meanwhile, project cost has almost doubled to Rs 1.08 lakh crore, and completion of the new rail corridor has been pushed back to 2029. The massive Mumbai suburban train accident, and the lack of funds for improving safety, on the one hand, while huge funds are allocated to what P Chidambaram called 'vanity projects' like the Bullet Train', is triggering serious debate. CM mulls 50% fare concession for women in private sector
Goa CM Pramod Sawant Bicholim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said that state govt is considering a 50% bus fare concession to women employed in the private sector in Goa. He said that the move is meant to cut down the expenditure on travel made by women, to encourage them to take up jobs in the private sector. Sawant relaunched the Mhaji Bus Scheme and fuel and insurance subsidy drive in Bicholim and Sattari talukas, a Rs 3/km operational subsidy, and a Rs 10 lakh one-time grant to private bus owners to replace old buses. Sawant said that with this aid of Rs 3/km, if a bus runs up to 200km per day under the scheme, the bus owner would be able to earn an average income of Rs 2.20 lakh per month. The CM said that bus operators would also get 50% of their insurance premium reimbursed, free ticketing machines, and KTCL smart card support. Some swipe machines were handed over to bus owners on Saturday. Sawant said that the card provided by KTC authorities can be also used in buses running under scheme, which will help bus owners earn more profit. Besides this, a real-time bus tracking app, 'Bus On The Go', will be introduced, he said. 'Goa will be the first state in the nation to digitalise bus services with the help of a novel technology under the scheme,' said Sawant. He also said that private buses would also be extended govt ad revenue and branding support. 'This is a big step towards modern, inclusive, and self-reliant public transport in Goa,' said Sawant. At the programme at Sanquelim, Sawant distributed approval letters of 50% of the pending arrears for diesel to bus owners, and promised to release the balance 50% payment in two months. Sawant also asked bus operators not to overtake other buses in a bid to get the more passengers in. He said that if a bus operator is seen regularly running on a route, govt may even take a KTC bus off the route. The CM said that the idea behind improving public transport is to reduce the movement of private vehicles, which will ultimately help reduce accidents.
