(Kyodo) NAGASAKI: A 14th-century Buddhist statue, stolen in October 2012 and taken to South Korea, was returned to a Japanese temple on Monday, ending a dispute that had contributed to bilateral friction, a source close to the matter said. According to the Kyodo news agency, the statue of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, owned by Kannon Temple on Tsushima, a Nagasaki Prefecture island, was handed over in South Korea to people representing the Japanese temple on Saturday. The artefact is designated as a cultural asset by the prefecture. The statue, which was airlifted to Fukuoka Prefecture on the southwestern main island of Kyushu and then transported to Tsushima by ferry, is expected to be stored at a museum after a ceremony at the temple, the source said. After the statue was stolen, the South Korean authorities arrested the thieves and confiscated it. In 2016, however, Buseoksa Temple in the country filed a lawsuit claiming that the statue had been plundered by Japanese pirates hundreds of years ago. In 2023, South Korea's Supreme Court ruled favouring Kannon Temple's ownership. The return procedures were completed in January. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Bank officer loses RM241,700 in online vehicle scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A bank officer lost his entire savings, including EPF funds, amounting to RM241,700 in an elaborate online vehicle purchase scam. The victim, a 52-year-old man, fell prey to a fraudulent advertisement for a used four-wheel-drive vehicle on Facebook. Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor stated that the incident began on July 4 when the victim responded to the advertisement. He communicated with the supposed seller via WhatsApp and was asked to provide a copy of his identity card along with an advance payment. 'Between July 9 and 21, the victim made 40 transactions to eight different accounts, totalling RM241,700,' Azli said. The scam escalated when the suspect demanded an additional RM31,000 for alleged fingerprinting costs at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. The victim realised he had been deceived and lodged a police report yesterday morning. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

Negligence of Pan Borneo contractor blamed

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: The victim sustained a fractured right arm. BEAUFORT: A motorcyclist escaped serious injury or worse due to the alleged negligence of the Pan Borneo Project contractor, who failed to place proper warning signs near a pothole, recently. The accident occurred at Kampung Naluyan, Mesapol Sipitang, along the Pan Borneo Highway (Sindumin–Melalia stretch). According to an eyewitness, Abdillah AJ, the victim, identified as Bakar Januddin, crashed into a deep pothole at approximately 11:30 am. Abdillah said he was on his way back from Sipitang and had just reached Kampung Naluyan, near the junction to Kampung Lubok Darat, when he witnessed the motorcyclist veer off and fall into the roadside hole. 'Fortunately, some passersby noticed the incident and helped the victim out of the hole. He was rushed to the hospital, but his motorcycle was badly damaged,' Abdillah said. The victim sustained a fractured right arm. The witness stressed that no warning signs or signal lights were placed at the location to alert road users of the hazard. 'I've seen too many accidents caused by the carelessness of the Pan Borneo highway contractors. It's costing people their safety,' he added. Residents living along the stretch between Sipitang and Lumadan want the government, particularly the Public Works Department (JKR), to closely monitor the road conditions and ensure the contractor fulfills safety obligations. Sipitang District Police Chief Supt Awang Anak Suanda said police have received a report from the victim's family. 'The victim must file a formal report at the police station to proceed with claims against the Public Works Department and the responsible parties for the damages incurred,' he said. Police also advised that contractors must place proper warning signs and install lighted signals at any hazardous or damaged road sections, especially to alert motorists during night time. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
