Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025
By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: The victim sustained a fractured right arm. BEAUFORT: A motorcyclist escaped serious injury or worse due to the alleged negligence of the Pan Borneo Project contractor, who failed to place proper warning signs near a pothole, recently. The accident occurred at Kampung Naluyan, Mesapol Sipitang, along the Pan Borneo Highway (Sindumin–Melalia stretch). According to an eyewitness, Abdillah AJ, the victim, identified as Bakar Januddin, crashed into a deep pothole at approximately 11:30 am. Abdillah said he was on his way back from Sipitang and had just reached Kampung Naluyan, near the junction to Kampung Lubok Darat, when he witnessed the motorcyclist veer off and fall into the roadside hole. 'Fortunately, some passersby noticed the incident and helped the victim out of the hole. He was rushed to the hospital, but his motorcycle was badly damaged,' Abdillah said. The victim sustained a fractured right arm. The witness stressed that no warning signs or signal lights were placed at the location to alert road users of the hazard. 'I've seen too many accidents caused by the carelessness of the Pan Borneo highway contractors. It's costing people their safety,' he added. Residents living along the stretch between Sipitang and Lumadan want the government, particularly the Public Works Department (JKR), to closely monitor the road conditions and ensure the contractor fulfills safety obligations. Sipitang District Police Chief Supt Awang Anak Suanda said police have received a report from the victim's family. 'The victim must file a formal report at the police station to proceed with claims against the Public Works Department and the responsible parties for the damages incurred,' he said. Police also advised that contractors must place proper warning signs and install lighted signals at any hazardous or damaged road sections, especially to alert motorists during night time. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 41 unlicensed ‘KLCC photographers' fined by DBKL
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: DBKL officers conducting 'Op Lens' near KLCC to weed out unlicensed photographers operating in the area. (Facebook pics) PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued fines to 41 unlicensed street photographers operating in the KLCC area as part of an enforcement operation over the weekend. The operation, codenamed 'Op Lens', was carried out with support from the police, immigration, national registration department, and federal territories department, targeting unlicensed individuals offering paid photography services in public spaces. DBKL said public spaces were shared property and must be used ethically, in an orderly manner, and in compliance with regulations. 'Unauthorised photography services are not only illegal but also pose safety risks to visitors,' it said in a Facebook post. 'Some of these activities take place on roads or pedestrian walkways, endangering both photographers and clients, and disrupting public movement.' DBKL also warned that repeat offenders risked having their equipment confiscated. It said enforcement would continue to ensure that public areas remain orderly and safe. The crackdown follows mounting complaints on social media from visitors who said they were misled or harassed by self-styled 'photographers' offering low-cost services that escalated into disputes. According to media reports, the photographers were fined RM2,000 each. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cops probe ‘flogging' of Prime Minister effigy during Turun Anwar rally
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka. PETALING JAYA: Police are probing the reported flogging of an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim near Masjid Negara during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, Bernama reported. He said the case had been referred to the classified crime investigation unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the other three reports were related to the use of drones. 'The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for further action,' he said, adding that any misconduct by rally participants would be investigated by the police. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police estimates, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Protesters had called for Anwar to step down as prime minister over the rising cost of living, among others. At an anti-corruption rally in Sabah last month, organised by several Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, protesters burned a caricature of the prime minister. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action over the Sabah water department scandal. Police later said they were investigating the burning of the caricature under the Sedition Act 1948 and Penal Code. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police to review nearby CCTV footage in break-in at Dr Mahathir's grandson's home
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: he police will examine the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding areas near the residence of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's grandson in Bukit Ledang, here, which was reportedly broken into last Wednesday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the residence itself was of limited use as it only retains footage for 24 hours, making it difficult to aid in the ongoing investigation. 'The CCTV system at the house was installed in the 1990s and has limited storage capacity,' he told a press conference today. "The incident is believed to have occurred more than 24 hours after the police report was made by the owner of the house, which meant the footage had already been overwritten,' he told a press conference here today. According to Mohamed Usuf, the house is an old house that is rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. "So far, the police have recorded statements from three individuals, namely Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard and a maid. The police are also analysing the evidence received, including fingerprints, and this may take some time," he said. According to reports, the residence belonging to the former Prime Minister's grandson was broken into, resulting in the victim losing RM1.8 million worth of jewellery. It is understood that the incident was discovered by the maid at 3 pm last Wednesday after she found the gate at the back of the house had been cut and her employer's room was ransacked. When asked about the case involving singer Shila Amzah, who claimed to have been verbally attacked by another singer, he said the police would record statements from two more witnesses to complete the investigation paper. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
