Israeli missile hits Gaza children collecting water, IDF blames malfunction

At least eight Palestinians, most of them children, were killed and more than a dozen were wounded in central Gaza when they went to collect water on Sunday, local officials said, in an Israeli strike which the military said missed its target.

The Israeli military said the missile had been intended to hit an Islamic Jihad militant in the area but that a malfunction had caused it to fall 'dozens of metres from the target'.
'The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians,' it said in a statement, adding that the incident was under review.
The strike hit a water distribution point in Nuseirat refugee camp, killing six children and injuring 17 others, said Ahmed Abu Saifan, an emergency doctor at Al-Awda Hospital.
Water shortages in Gaza have worsened sharply in recent weeks with fuel shortages causing desalination and sanitation facilities to close, making people dependent on collection centres where they can fill up their plastic containers.

Hours later, 12 people were killed by an Israeli strike on a market in Gaza City, including a prominent hospital consultant, Ahmad Qandil, Palestinian media reported. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the attack.

Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says 2 US aid workers hurt in grenade attack

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said on Saturday that two American aid workers had suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a grenade attack at a food distribution site in Khan Younis. Advertisement The US- and Israeli-backed GHF said in a statement that the injured Americans were receiving medical treatment and were in a stable condition. 'The attack – which preliminary information indicates was carried out by two assailants who threw two grenades at the Americans – occurred at the conclusion of an otherwise successful distribution in which thousands of Gazans safely received food,' the GHF said. GHF, which began distributing aid in Gaza in May, employs private US military contractors tasked with providing security at their sites. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. The Israeli military, in a later statement, accused what it called 'terrorist organisations' of sabotaging the distribution of aid in Gaza. Advertisement Gaza has seen an escalation in violence as efforts continue to reach a ceasefire agreement. Hamas on Friday reported, it had responded positively to a US-brokered deal and was prepared to enter into talks. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

UN records over 600 Gaza killings near aid distribution points, humanitarian convoys

Israeli air strikes killed 15 Palestinians in Gaza early on Friday, while a hospital said another 20 people died in shootings while waiting for aid. Advertisement Meanwhile, the UN human rights office says it has recorded 613 killings in Gaza near humanitarian convoys and as Palestinians try to reach aid at distribution points run by an Israeli-backed American organisation since it first began operations in late May. Spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said the rights office was not able to attribute responsibility for the killings. But she said 'it is clear that the Israeli military has shelled and shot at Palestinians trying to reach the distribution points' operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). In a message to Associated Press, Shamdasani said that of the total tallied, 509 killings were 'GHF-related', meaning at or near its distribution sites. 'Information keeps coming in,' she added. 'This is ongoing and it is unacceptable.' Advertisement Shamdasani originally told the UN briefing the killings were recorded both at GHF sites and near humanitarian convoys. She later clarified that the killings in the vicinity of GHF distribution points were 'at or near their distribution sites'.
