US Court Halts Immigration Arrests in California
A federal judge has ordered a temporary halt to random immigration arrests across seven counties in California, including Los Angeles, marking a significant legal setback for former President Donald Trump's immigration policies.
Judge Mameé A. Frimpong issued two emergency orders as part of an ongoing lawsuit. The first blocks federal immigration agents from carrying out arbitrary arrests, while the second prohibits the government from limiting attorney access to detainees held at the Los Angeles immigration detention facility.
The case, brought by immigrant rights groups, argues that these actions violate the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the US Constitution. During a recent hearing, advocates presented what the judge described as a mountain of evidence indicating systemic rights violations by federal authorities.
In response, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security,
dismissed
claims of racial profiling as completely false and offensive, stating that immigration enforcement is conducted with precision and due diligence.
California Governor Gavin Newsom welcomed the court's decision, calling it a temporary victory for justice. He accused Trump's administration of using fear, chaos, and cruelty to enforce a hardline immigration policy that infringes on civil rights.
The court ruling came amid heightened tensions following a large-scale US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on farms in Carpinteria and Camarillo, California, which led to the detention of 200 undocumented migrants.
Tragically, a farmworker died after falling from a 10-metre height during the raid. According to the United Farm Workers union, the individual's death resulted directly from ICE's actions. The worker's identity has not been released.
In addition to the arrests, 10 children were rescued from potential forced labor, exploitation, and human trafficking, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The farming company involved, Glass House Brands, denied knowingly violating labor laws or employing minors, stating that it would provide legal representation to the detained workers.
The raid sparked widespread protests, with over 500 demonstrators attempting to block enforcement operations. Tear gas was deployed after some protesters reportedly threw projectiles at ICE vehicles. Four American citizens face charges for assaulting or resisting law enforcement officers.

Egypt, China sign 3 MoUs to boost financial, payment system ties
Basant Ahmed The Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), Hassan Abdalla, received his Chinese counterpart Pan Gongsheng in Cairo, where the two officials discussed enhancing bilateral financial cooperation and witnessed the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at deepening economic ties. The first MoU was signed between Suez Canal Bank, China-Africa Investment Company (TEDA), and CIPS Limited, the operator of China's Cross-Border Interbank Payment System. The agreement aims to promote the use of the Chinese yuan among businesses operating in the Egypt-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone. The second agreement was signed between Chinese payment firm Pay and the Egyptian Banks Company (EBC), which manages Egypt's national payment infrastructure. This partnership seeks to improve Egypt's electronic payment ecosystem and broaden acceptance of Pay cards across points of sale and online platforms throughout the country. Pay also signed a separate MoU with Egyptian fintech PayMob to expand the acceptance of its cards among merchants and websites affiliated with PayMob. Discussions between the two sides focused on several key areas, including a local currency swap agreement, settling payments in local currencies, Egypt's issuance of Panda bonds in the Chinese market, and linking the two countries' payment systems. Former Israeli leader says planned ‘humanitarian city' in Gaza would be a ‘concentration camp'
Jerusalem CNN — A planned 'humanitarian city' inside Gaza intended to hold hundreds of thousands of Palestinians would be a 'concentration camp,' former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has warned. Defense Minister Israel Katz said last week he had told the military to advance plans for the zone, which would eventually contain the entire population of Gaza. The area would be built on the ruins of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, and once Palestinians enter the zone, they would not be allowed to leave. Katz also vowed to implement a plan for the emigration of Palestinians from Gaza. 'It is a concentration camp. I am sorry,' Olmert told The Guardian newspaper on Sunday. 'If they (Palestinians) will be deported into the new 'humanitarian city', then you can say that this is part of an ethnic cleansing.' In response to Olmert's comments, the Prime Minister's Office called him a 'convicted felon disgracing Israel on CNN.' In a statement, the office said: 'We evacuate civilians. Hamas blocks them. He calls that a war crime?' Olmert was freed from prison in 2017 after serving 16 months on corruption charges. Olmert has previously blasted the conduct of the Israeli military in Gaza and the country's political leadership. In May, he said he could no longer defend Israel against accusations of war crimes. 'What is it if not a war crime?' he asked rhetorically in an interview with CNN. He said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and far-right members of his government are 'committing actions which can't be interpreted any other way.' More than 58,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The latest comments from Olmert, who served as Israel's prime minister from 2006-2009, go much further in criticizing the country's intentions in Gaza, however, especially since comparisons to Nazi concentration camps in Israel is considered virtually unthinkable. But Olmert said it was the 'inevitable interpretation' of the plans. AFP/Getty Images 'When they build a camp where they (plan to) 'clean' more than half of Gaza, then the inevitable understanding of the strategy of this (is that) it is not to save (Palestinians). It is to deport them, to push them and to throw them away,' Olmert told the Guardian. Katz's plans for what he dubbed the 'humanitarian city' were discussed at a meeting with Netanyahu on Sunday evening, according to a source familiar with the matter. But after Israeli news outlets reported that it would take months to build the zone and billions of dollars, the source said Netanyahu asked to make its establishment shorter and less expensive. Yair Lapid, the head of Israel's opposition, blasted the plans as an attempt by Netanyahu to let his far-right government partners 'run wild with extreme fantasies just to preserve his coalition.' In a statement on social media, Lapid called to 'end the war and bring back the hostages.' Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer, told CNN last week that Katz's plan amounts to the forcible transfer of a population in preparation for deportation. Both of these are war crimes, Sfard said. 'If they are done on a massive scale – whole communities – they can amount to crimes against humanity,' Sfard added, dismissing the notion that any departure from Gaza could be considered voluntary.
