Another showstopper by Patlansky
There is acoustic blues and electric blues, and on both of these counts, this man is a master.
His previous show was a smooth dance between haunting and rollicking songs.
But this one: the full band tour finale at Menlyn Barnyard this past weekend, took the tunes (and riffs, and lyrics, and solos) to new heights.
And by his own admission, he is a Stevie Ray Vaughn follower, but he seems to have made some of SRV's DNA his own – with his original tribute Red Velvet Suit, which, fittingly, kicked the show off in top gear.
Patlansky refers to Philip Sayce's style as 'a relentless barrage of soul and power'.
This actually describes his own musical style, from my perspective.
Even the ballads that sweep more than they tug are simultaneously soulful and powerful.
As Rekord's Elize Parker remarked at the time of the launch of his latest album Movin' On last year, his versatility lies in how smoothly he can move from one mood to the next.
And that he did in his inimitable style during this full band show. Band members bass player Greg van Kerkhof and drummer Andy Maritz are in their own right of international standard, like Patlansky.
And their seamless interaction made the evening a rip (or should I say riff) roaring rollercoaster of top-notch music.
Their riveting playing at times almost lifted the roof, only to be taken down again by the likes of 'Movin' On'… a soulful song that tells how Patlansky's father always pointed to the truth of just moving on, even though times can be tough.

'Who I am' is a touching song described by a friend as 'I can feel my car wheels under me when I hear it'.

During the show, some songs from his Influencer set also charmed the audience, who were hanging on the music every note of the way.
Although Patlansky did not do a full-on behind-the-head guitar trick a-la-Jimmy Hendricks, those who were paying attention saw him playing a full song with only one hand.
That's the thing with blues guitarists.
They will never stop pushing the boundaries and experimenting with drawing sound from their guitars, making their audience gasp in awe.
Patlansky remains Pretoria's top international blues artist.
His album Movin' On, launched last year, was voted into the number three spot in the annual Blues Rock Review top 20 albums.
In this, he pipped blues greats like Philip Sayce in 14th spot and Marc Broussard in 17th place to the post.

WATCH: Massive python pulled from safari vehicle near Pretoria
A routine vehicle check turned into an unexpected wildlife encounter at Mongena Game Lodge near Pretoria, when field guides discovered a massive Southern African python curled up in the undercarriage of a safari vehicle. The protected snake appeared to be stuck between parts of the game viewer, prompting a carefully coordinated rescue mission that lasted over an hour. The entire operation — from dismantling parts of the vehicle to gently washing and safely releasing the snake — was captured on video, offering a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into bushveld life when the wild comes to camp. Watch the video here: According to a statement by the lodge on Facebook the python was discovered on Monday. 'This stunning Southern African Python had made itself home in the undercarriage of one of the game viewers and seemed stuck between the various parts of the vehicle. It furthermore said Southern African Pythons are a protected species in South Africa and play an important role within a healthy and functioning ecosystem. 'Fearing it might injure itself, a rescue plan was quickly put in motion, and a team assembled to safely remove the snake without causing it any harm. 'After more than an hour, including removing parts of the vehicle, the python was successfully extracted. It was gently washed to remove any oils or residue it may have picked up and thoroughly examined for injuries. Once cleared, it was released safely back into the bush.' Biggest Lamb Champs comes to Loftus
The search for the best lamb in South Africa brought 7 000 people to Loftus Stadium this week as the annual Lamb Champs competition took place. Music, food, and enjoyment with friends and family were the order of the day, all centred around mouth-watering lamb meat. Artists like Ricus Nel, Jan Jan Jan, and Ichnus had feet tapping, while the smell of lamb on the spit kept everyone anticipating the feast that was coming. This is the fourth time that this annual event has taken place, and CEO of The Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI), Francois Rossouw, says that this past weekend was the largest they've ever held. Some were brave enough to enter the ice competition, and 40 entrants even took to the stage to eat a sheep's head. 'It's about what the consumer thinks about the lamb, how they experience and what the taste is like. So, we invite farmers from all nine provinces to come showcase their lamb. 'We invite the public as well because we want to shorten the value chain, and we want to introduce the consumer to the farmer. 'We don't have this connection any more between the consumer, who has someone who has stayed on a farm or knows someone who owns a farm. 'We want them to meet the farmers who produce the meat we enjoy on the braai on a Saturday,' Rossouw said. JP Nel of the Enkelbos Farm, in the Stella district, North West, emerged as the winner of Lamb Champs Pretoria 2025 with his Blackhead Dorper.
