Delhi HC directs Centre to frame rules for mode-specific RTI information
Highlighting a gap in the current RTI Rules, a division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated that the need for providing information in the format sought by applicants--such as email or pen drives--while ensuring proper safeguards.
The Court emphasised that existing rules do not account for present-day digital preferences, which can limit accessibility and defeat the spirit of the RTI Act, 2005. The judges instructed the appropriate authority to evaluate the issue and make a decision within three months.
The directions came in response to a petition filed by two law students, who argued that RTI procedures continue to reference outdated formats, such as diskettes and floppies. They urged that information delivery should reflect current technology, including cloud platforms and secure email transfers.
The plea also requested clear provisions for modern digital payment methods, such as UPI, net banking, and credit cards, to make the RTI process more user-friendly.
Despite earlier representations made to the concerned ministries, no action had been taken, prompting the petitioners to approach the Court, stated the plea.
The High Court concluded that framing updated rules is essential for ensuring the effective realisation of citizens' rights under the RTI Act in today's digital era. (ANI)

Emphasising defence and security as a key area of engagement, Prime Minister Modi said both nations would advance their collaboration guided by a shared vision. 'In the defence and security sector, we will progress with the guiding principle of 'Security through Solidarity.' Collaboration will be strengthened in key areas such as armed forces training, maritime security, defence supply chains, and cybersecurity,' he said during the joint press briefing. He also highlighted the strong economic relationship between the two countries. 'Our bilateral trade has crossed USD 3 billion. The Indian companies have invested $2 billion in around 900 projects,' the Prime Minister noted. He described the India-Ghana partnership as one built on common principles and shared struggles for independence. 'At the heart of the India-Ghana friendship lies our shared values, common struggles, and collective aspirations for an inclusive future. The freedom struggles of our two nations have served as a source of inspiration for many others. Even today, Ghana stands as a 'Beacon of Hope' in West Africa, exemplifying the strength of a vibrant democracy and inspiring neighbouring countries,' he said. New Delhi: Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday strongly criticised the ruling Mahayuti alliance and called for an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a Special Investigation Team's (SIT) submission to the Bombay High Court stating there was no foul play in the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of maligning Aaditya Thackeray with baseless allegations linking him to Salian's death. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'Devendra Fadnavis must apologise. However, the Mumbai Police's affidavit submitted to the Bombay High Court rejected these claims, stating there was no evidence of sexual or physical assault. The police affidavit, filed by Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of Malvani Police Station, indicated that Salian died by suicide, jumping from her apartment window of her own volition. It cited that she was under 'tremendous mental stress' due to family disputes and failed business ventures, and was inebriated at the time of her death. Her fiancé, who was present on the night of the incident, also ruled out any foul play. In March, Satish Salian approached the Bombay High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a First Information Report (FIR) against Aaditya Thackeray. Subsequently, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded Thackeray's resignation and criminal action against him. Aaditya Thackeray has challenged the petition, terming it 'false, frivolous, and motivated' and has sought a hearing before any orders are passed. The Bombay High Court is yet to decide on Satish Salian's plea for a CBI investigation.

Minister's BIG warning amid Hindi row: ‘You must speak Marathi in Maharashtra, if anyone disrespects…'
Amid the ongoing 'Hindi imposition' row, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam issued a stern warning on Thursday and said that laws will be enforced if anyone disrespects the language in the state. 'In Maharashtra, you have to speak Marathi. If you don't know Marathi, your attitude shouldn't be that you won't speak Marathi... If anyone disrespects Marathi in Maharashtra, we will enforce our laws,' Kadam told ANI. Kadam's comments come a day after a video of a Thane shop owner being assaulted for purportedly refusing to speak in Marathi went viral on social media. A group of men, reportedly MNS workers, allegedly assaulted a shop owner for refusing to speak in Marathi on Tuesday in the Bhayander area of Maharashtra's Thane. The viral video showed that the men slapped the shop owner several times after he was asked 'Which language is spoken in the state'. The shop owner's response, who was talking in Hindi, that 'all languages' infuriated the men who had visited his shop to buy food, as reported by PTI. According to a Hindustan Times report, the incident occurred shortly after the Maharashtra government withdrew its orders on the implementation of the three-language policy in the state, which lead to the opposition terming it as 'Hindi imposition'. A police complaint was filed by the shop owner and a probe is on, the HT report said, quoting an official. Members of the MNS have been trying to push for the use of Marathi language in commercial establishments and banks in the state. Reacting to the incident, Kadam said, 'Those who beat up (the shop owner) should not take the law into their own hands. They should have filed a complaint against the concerned person; action would have been taken.' The Narendra Jadhav Committee will share its report on Maharashtra's three-language policy with the state government in three months, a Government Resolution (GR) by the Maharashtra School Education and Sports Department said. According to the GR, the committee members will be appointed by the government soon. The committee will study the report by the Dr Raghunath Mashelkar committee and discuss the issue with the concerned constituents, institutions, and people. The committee will study the other States and Union Territories that have adopted the National Education Policy 2020, news agency ANI reported. The row over the three-language policy began when the Maharashtra government, on April 16, passed a resolution that mandated Hindi as the compulsory third language in Marathi and English-medium schools. However, in response to the backlash, the government revised the policy on June 17 through an amended resolution, stating, 'Hindi will be the third language. For those who want to learn another language, at least 20 willing students are required.' (With inputs from agencies)
