A Dark Art: New Ford Territory flagship SUV arrives in SA

News2409-06-2025
The new Ford Territory Dark Edition has the same turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol engine producing 138kW and 318Nm.
It's available in Lustrous Crystal White, Grey, Panther Black, and Ruby Red.
Unique to the Territory Dark Edition is a new 360-degree camera.
A year after its launch, Ford South Africa has introduced its first update to the Territory range with the new Dark Edition, replacing the outgoing and former flagship Territory Titanium.
The Dark Edition is a relatively mild update, altering the vehicle's main cosmetic focal points but not going beyond skin deep.
As the name suggests, anything formerly chrome or mirror-finish has been replaced with high-gloss black. These include its satin black grille, high-gloss black treatment for the skid plate, fog light accents and mirror caps. It looks particularly striking in Crystal White but is available in other colours, such as Lustrous Grey, Panther Black, and Ruby Red.
Inside, the polarising blue and black leather combination in the Titanium makes way for conventional black leather to match the Territory Dark Edition's charcoal black headliner, pillars, door trims, and instrument panel with Cyber Orange stitching.
As the new flagship in the range, it inherits the Titanium's technological full house. Nice-to-haves such as the eight-speaker sound system, wireless charging and the 12.3-inch high-definition digital instrument cluster in combination with the 12.3-inch landscape infotainment touchscreen are all standard.
Safety features are equally weighty and include Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Assist.
Unique to the Territory Dark Edition is a new 360-degree camera that provides all-round visibility.
With 138kW of power and 318Nm sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox, the Dark Edition can't use its bolder looks to race ahead of its siblings. The 1.8-litre turbocharged engine is unchanged, as are the four driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, and Mountain.
In a fiercely competitive segment that seems to gain new, mostly Chinese, competitors almost weekly, the new Dark Edition will hope to shed a lot more light on the avalanche of SUVs.
Pricing
Territory Dark Edition 1.8L EcoBoost 7AT – R733 000
Pricing includes a six-year or 90 000km Ford Optional Service Plan, four-year or 120 000km Ford warranty, four-year or unlimited-distance Roadside Assistance, and a five-year or unlimited-distance corrosion warranty. In addition, over-the-counter (OTC) parts and service parts warranty (SPW) are covered for two years or unlimited distance. The recommended service interval is 15 000km or annually, whichever occurs first.

Ford CEO Jim Farley warns AI will wipe out half of white-collar jobs, but the ‘essential economy' has a huge shortage of workers

While highlighting the importance of the 'essential economy' and blue-collar skilled trades, Ford CEOP Jim Farley also predicted artificial intelligence will halve the number of white-collar jobs in the U.S., becoming the latest boss to sound the alarm about AI's impact on workers. Last month, Amazon's CEO said the company's corporate workforce will shrink due to AI. Ford CEO Jim Farley recently became the latest corporate boss to sound the alarm about artificial intelligence's impact on workers. During the Aspen Ideas Festival last week, he highlighted the importance of the 'essential economy'—which he defined as everything that gets moved, built or fixed—while saying blue-collar skilled trades have been neglected. The U.S. spends too little on vocational training, which is also geared more toward 1950 than 2050, contributing to a decline in blue-collar productivity, Farley explained, though the carmaker has been investing in training. Meanwhile, demand for skilled trades is expected to surge, and even the AI boom will require workers to build and service the facilities that provide all the computing capacity that's needed. There's already a massive shortage of trade workers, he added, estimating a deficit of 600,000 in factories and nearly half a million in construction, for example. 'There's more than one way to the American dream, but our whole education system is focused on four-year [college] education,' Farley said. 'Hiring an entry worker at a tech company has fallen 50% since 2019. Is that really where we want all of our kids to go? Artificial intelligence is gonna replace literally half of all white-collar workers in the U.S.' His AI warning marked that latest from a top CEO about AI's impact on the labor force, especially on office workers. Last month, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company's corporate workforce will shrink in the next few years due to AI. 'We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,' Jassy wrote in a memo to employee. 'It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.' In addition, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told Axios in May that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs, sending the unemployment rate as high as 20% in the next five years. The latest employment report showed the jobless rate was at 4.1% in June. There are already signs that AI is threatening the types of jobs that historically have served as stepping stones for young workers. LinkedIn's chief economic opportunity officer, Aneesh Raman, pointed out in May that AI tools are doing the types of simple coding and debugging tasks that junior software developers did to gain experience. AI is also doing work that young employees in the legal and retail sectors once did. For his part, Ford's CEO sought to draw attention to the opportunity in skilled trades, noting that more Americans are also considering trade school than a four-year college. 'We all sense that America can do better than we are doing,' Farley said last week. 'We need a new mindset, one that recognizes the success the importance of this essential economy and the importance to our vibrancy and sustainability as a country.' This 1965 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Coupe sold for $145,600 through RM Sotheby's in 2023. The most advanced and well-built versions of the model are the 356 C and SC (shown here), made in 1964 and 1965. According to the auction house, this example is dressed in its factory-correct Kunstleder Schwartz (Black Leatherette) trim. A close-up of the gearshift for the car's four-speed manual transmission, which was the only shifting option throughout the entire 356 dynasty. The two-door vehicle features a 2+2 seating configuration. This car's 1.6-liter flat-four engine originally made 95 hp, though its original twin Solex carburetors were subsequently replaced with a twin Weber setup. This 1965 example of Porsche's 356 had its body built by Reutter. While a car with its engine hung over the rear wheels was a novelty at the time, the concept is very familiar to today's drivers, who will find a 356 manageable if the laws of physics are generally observed. Porsche's 356 is a wonderful classic to own and drive, and is especially coveted by enthusiasts with an appreciation for purity of concept and refined design.
