F1 extends Las Vegas Grand Prix through 2027
The Las Vegas Grand Prix will remain on the Formula 1 schedule through at least 2027, F1 confirmed on Saturday.
F1 officials and race organisers both expressed interest in keeping the event on the calendar into the next decade.
'We've agreed collectively that we're going to do a two-year extension for 2026 and '27,' Las Vegas GP president Emily Prazer said Saturday, per ESPN. 'We want to make sure that we're continuing to evolve what we're doing, but the intent is a much longer-term arrangement.
Clark County, Nevada, already has confirmed plans to hold the race through 2032.
'The length of extensions don't really reflect anything other than it just makes sense incrementally, we know what's going to happen over the next couple of years,' said Steve Hill, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
'We're planning on this being a permanent race, we'll just keep planning extensions that will probably expand as we go forward.'
The race is on the F1 calendar for the weekend before Thanksgiving in 2025 (November 22) and 2026 (November 21).
According to Las Vegas figures, the 2024 event generated $934m (R16.76bn) in revenue and raised $45m (R807.61m) in taxes.
The inaugural race, which includes parts of the famed Las Vegas Strip, took place in 2023. Max Verstappen won the initial Las Vegas GP for Red Bull Racing and Mercedes' George Russell finished atop the podium in 2024.

Norris leads McLaren one-two in second Austrian GP practice
Lando Norris led Formula One leader Oscar Piastri in a McLaren one-two in second practice for the Austrian Grand Prix on Friday after George Russell went fastest for Mercedes in the opening session. Norris had handed his car to Alex Dunne for an impressive F1 practice debut for the Irish rookie and Formula Two leader, but the Briton was right up to speed as soon as he got back behind the wheel. After Russell's best of 1:05.542 seconds in the early afternoon, Norris — 22 points behind Piastri in the title battle after 10 of 24 races — lapped in 1:04.580 with Piastri 0.157 slower. Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen, a five-time winner at his team's home circuit, was the only other driver under the five second mark with a 1:04.898. Russell, winner from pole position in Canada two weeks ago after the McLarens collided, was sixth in practice two with Lance Stroll a surprise fourth for Aston Martin and Charles Leclerc fifth for Ferrari. Verstappen was without regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for the weekend due to personal reasons with Simon Rennie taking over. Dunne, given track time as part of team obligations to give rookie drivers F1 experience, was the talk of the first session when he lapped fourth fastest and only 0.069 slower than Piastri. Still only 19 and the first Irish driver in 22 years to take part in a grand prix weekend, he thanked the team over the radio as the chequered flag fell. 'A little boy's dream came true, and this is definitely the best day of my life,' he said. 'Thank you everyone for letting me do this, and thanks to Lando as well for trusting me with his car.' McLaren team boss Andrea Stella cautioned not to read too much into the time, however. 'Alex has been quite diligent and impressive, and then he also had the chance to show some speed and, no surprise, he is a fast driver,' said the Italian. 'I think we need to be a bit careful looking at the lap times, because his came later on in the stint when the fuel was down. But I think encouraging and impressive in terms of Alex himself, and also I think a good session for McLaren.' Austria has the shortest lap of the year in terms of time and all but 20th-placed Haas driver Oliver Bearman were within a second of Russell in the opening session. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was ninth and 10th respectively in the sessions as Ferrari made a difficult start to their preparations with mechanics working on both cars during practice one. Hamilton was also warned for impeding Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli. 'I didn't see Antonelli,' he said over the radio after the Italian went wide to avoid a collision. Leclerc sat out that session with Swedish reserve Dino Beganovic getting some track time and finishing 18th.

Russell fastest in first Austrian Grand Prix practice
Mercedes' George Russell kept Max Verstappen off the top of the time sheets with the fastest lap in first Friday practice for the Austrian Grand Prix while Ireland's Alex Dunne made an impressive F1 debut with McLaren. The Briton, winner from pole position in Canada two weeks ago, lapped the Red Bull Ring with a best time of 1:05.542 seconds. Red Bull's reigning world champion Verstappen, five times a winner at Spielberg and without regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for the weekend due to personal reasons with Simon Rennie taking over, was 0.065 slower. McLaren's Formula One leader Oscar Piastri was third, 0.155 off the pace. Formula Two leader Dunne, taking Lando Norris's McLaren for the season as part of the team's obligation to give track time to young drivers, was fourth fastest and only 0.069 slower than Piastri. Dunne, still only 19 and the first Irish driver in 22 years to take part in a grand prix weekend, thanked the team over the radio as the chequered flag fell. 'A little boy's dream came true — and this is definitely the best day of my life,' he said. 'Thank you, everyone, for letting me do this — and thanks to Lando as well, for trusting me with his car.' Norris, 22 points behind Piastri after 10 of 24 races, will be back for the second session — his first time on track since he collided with his Australian teammate in Canada while challenging for fourth place. Austria has the shortest lap of the year in terms of time and all but 20th-placed Haas driver Oliver Bearman were within a second of Russell. Pierre Gasly was fifth for Alpine, with Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto sixth for Sauber and Alex Albon seventh for Williams, ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was ninth as Ferrari had a difficult start to their preparations, with both cars in the garage during the session with mechanics working on floor and gearbox. Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc sat out the session, with Swedish reserve Dino Beganovic getting some track time and finishing 18th. Isack Hadjar made it seven different teams in the top 10 with the 10th fastest lap for Racing Bulls.

Gasly heading to Hollywood if Alpine don't improve
French Formula One driver Pierre Gasly responded to Brad Pitt praising his acting potential by joking he might have to head to Hollywood if Alpine stayed last in the championship. Pitt, star of the movie F1 released this week, was asked at a recent New York premiere which drivers might have a future in Hollywood. "I'm going to give Carlos Sainz, he's definite, I'm going to say Pierre Gasly. I think he's got a feel for it," he told ABC television. "And of course Lewis (Hamilton) can do anything." Gasly told reporters at the Austrian Grand Prix that Pitt's comments had delighted his mother. "I must say it clearly made my mom pretty happy. She was very pleased to be the first in the family group chat to send it to all the family," he said. "Let's see how the season goes, but hopefully we score a few more points. Otherwise you might see me in Hollywood." Gasly, who has scored all of Alpine's 11 points with the team in some turmoil after the departure of principal Oliver Oakes and resignation of Renault boss Luca de Meo, said he had no acting experience. "I think it's the French side of me. I can play a French lover or something like that," he said.
