Takreem Foundation honours Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi and Shaikha Mai Al Khalifa at Dubai gala
The Emirati writer and researcher was among a number creative and political figures who were celebrated at a gala fundraiser that took place on Thursday at Jumeirah Emirates Towers.
Al Qassemi was honoured for his work in promoting Arab art and culture as founder of Barjeel Art Foundation, an independent initiative established in 2010. The foundation is dedicated to managing, preserving and exhibiting an extensive collection of modern and contemporary works from the region. It has hosted exhibitions around the world and contributed to the global visibility of Arab artists.
Al Qassemi has also taught at prestigious institutions, including Yale University, Columbia University, Boston College and American University of Sharjah. His courses often examine the intersection of politics, art and modern Arab history.
'I founded Barjeel Art Foundation about 15 years ago' Al Qassemi said in his acceptance speech. 'It has been an enriching experience that introduced me to our contemporary culture and Arab identity. This joinery revealed an important truth: our responsibility isn't just to share our culture and heritage with the world – we must also share it with one another.'
Other personalities celebrated at the event include Shaikha Mai Al Khalifa, who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Bahraini politician has been a prominent advocate for heritage preservation. In 2008, she was appointed as minister of information, and then served as the country's minister of culture between 2010 and 2014.
As president of Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities, she has led several initiatives dedicated to restoring historic sites in the country. She has also worked closely with Unesco in her role as chairwoman of Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage.
The late Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz was also given a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Saudi politician, businessman and philanthropist was an advocate for reforms in the kingdom. His son, Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal, received the award on his behalf.
A special distinction was also awarded to Pierre Choueiri, chairman and chief executive of Choueiri Group media company as well as to Al Multaqa Literary Salon.
Founded in 1998, Al Mutaqa is known for promoting intellectual exchange through discussions on literature, philosophy and art, pivoting these conversations around Arabic novels. The platform is recognised by Unesco and has contributed to the region's cultural landscape by hosting influential literary events, supporting emerging writers, and promoting a vibrant reading culture across the Arab world. The platform's founder and president Asma Seddiq Al Mutawa received the award during the fundraising gala.
Takreem was established in 2010 with the aim of bringing Arab accomplishments and achievers to the forefront on a global stage. Since its inception, the foundation has honoured laureates from across the region.
Takreem awards ceremonies have been held in cities including Beirut, Doha, Manama, Paris, Marrakesh, Dubai, Cairo, Amman and Kuwait. It also hosts regular galas to raise funds for various humanitarian initiatives.
In 2024, the group partnered with Sesobel and Assameh Birth & Beyond – organisations that focus on children's well-being – to raise funds to cover the medical expenses and daily needs for their beneficiaries for a full year.

He expressed pride in recognising the outstanding students, describing them as the true treasure and future wealth of societies and nations. He extended his best wishes to the students and their parents for continued success in their educational journeys and in their efforts to contribute to the development of their local communities and the broader Sudanese society. Address by graduate Hamad Ahmed Ibrahim For his part, Hamad Ahmed Ibrahim, a graduate of the University of Sharjah, delivered a speech on behalf of the honoured students. He expressed his gratitude to the management of the Sudanese Social Centre in Sharjah for their continuous support of students and their efforts in recognising academic excellence. He noted that such encouragement fosters a spirit of seriousness and perseverance, motivating students to continue on the path of knowledge and hard work. He affirmed that all the graduates will proudly carry forward this legacy of generosity, serving as ambassadors of knowledge and values. Honouring winners at ceremony conclusion At the conclusion of the ceremony, Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi honoured the distinguished winners in the categories of Scientific Production, Media Production, Career Excellence, and Postgraduate Studies across various specialisations. Celebrating graduates and providing entertainment During the ceremony, distinguished male and female graduates from high schools, universities, and colleges nationwide, along with recipients of the Sudanese Social Centre Awards in Sharjah, were honoured. The event also included a range of entertainment, such as musical and theatrical performances, a health corner providing free medical checkups, and children's activities. Attendance by community leaders and families The ceremony was attended by Eng. Abu Dhabi's CMA and NG9 Group sign $15m production deal
Principal photography will begin in September, with local crews and Emirati talent, supporting ADFC's rebate programme to highlight Emirati culture and heritage. The Abu Dhabi Creative Media Authority (CMA) has entered into a strategic partnership with NG9 Group, a consortium comprising Nirvana Holding, Gewan Holding and 9Yards Group, to deliver a slate of major film and television projects valued at AED55m ($15m). The collaboration will launch with the production of two feature films and a 10-episode television series, all aimed at global distribution. Scheduled to begin principal photography in September, the productions will be filmed in Abu Dhabi using local crews and talent, both in front of and behind the camera. This aligns with the Abu Dhabi Film Commission's expanded rebate programme, which encourages productions that highlight Emirati culture and heritage, offering significant financial incentives for qualifying projects. As part of the agreement, CMA will offer comprehensive support including access to filming locations, talent development, casting services and eligibility for the ADFC cashback rebate. In return, NG9 Group will provide preferential services to film projects supported by the Film Commission, including discounted hotel stays, car rentals, flights and luxury transportation options such as yachts and private jets. Khalid Khouri, Director of Industry Development at the Creative Media Authority, said: 'As we work to position Abu Dhabi as one of the world's leading creative hubs, expanding our local industry offering remains a core focus. Watch: Sheikh Mohammed visits Mall of the Emirates, spotted in Dubai supermarket
Hitting the mall this weekend? You might just spot the Ruler of Dubai, just like these residents. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has been visiting different parts of the emirate all week, surprising residents who catch a glimpse of him. Earlier, he was seen taking photographs with children and having warm conversations with residents while stepping out of a cafe in Dubai Mall. Not just that, the Ruler was also seen walking down the streets of the souk in Deira, despite the sweltering heat. This time, however, residents saw the leader walking past them in the aisles of Mall of the Emirates. On seeing him, one woman even shouted, "We love you!", a clear sign of how cherished he is by those who live here. Dressed sharply as always, the Ruler of Dubai walked with staff, a cane in hand. As with his other appearances this week, he was without armed guards, moving casually which is a striking contrast to many global leaders. People could be seen stepping aside and taking photographs as they saw him pass by. Many even pulled out their phones to capture the memorable moment. From malls and souks to trams and supermarkets, Sheikh Mohammed's presence this week has been a reminder of his deep connection with the people of Dubai. His spontaneous outings continue to inspire admiration, not just for his leadership, but for the humility and humanity he brings to it.
