Monday's briefing: Chelsea surprise Paris St Germain as Lionesses move forward

Elsewhere, there were emotional tributes to Diogo Jota ahead of Liverpool's friendly victory at Preston.
Palmer gives PSG the Blues

Cole Palmer hit back at the critics who had been giving Chelsea 's***' after firing them to Club World Cup glory in New York.
Palmer, who was presented with the Man of the Match award by President Donald Trump, scored the first two goals and set up the third in a surprise 3-0 final victory over Champions League winners Paris St Germain at the MetLife Stadium as Enzo Maresca's men capped an encouraging season in style.
Asked how excited he was by the team Maresca is building at Stamford Bridge, the England international told DAZN: 'He's building something special, something important with a young team. Everyone's talked a lot of s*** about us all season, but I feel like we're going in the right direction.'
Reflecting on the game, Palmer added: 'Obviously it's a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew that and to go out there and put a fight on like we did against a great team, yes, it's good.'
Six of the best

Defending champions England cruised into the Euro 2025 quarter-finals with a 6-1 victory over tournament newcomers Wales, who bowed out of the competition in St Gallen.
Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty before Ella Toone doubled the scoring in the 21st minute before Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo made it 4-0 at the break.
Beth Mead scored a fifth after the restart before Hannah Cain clawed one back with Wales' second-ever goal in a major tournament, but substitute Aggie Beever-Jones completed the scoring for an assured England, who will now face Sweden in Zurich on Thursday.
Liverpool and Preston pay tribute to Diogo Jota

For seven minutes after the final whistle, Liverpool players and staff stood in front of their supporters at Preston as they chanted Diogo Jota's name.
Sunday's pre-season friendly at Deepdale was originally envisaged as a day to kick-start preparations for Liverpool's Premier League title defence, but it played out as a memorial service for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 10 days after they died in a car accident in Spain.
On the pitch Liverpool eased to a 3-1 win through goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, but thoughts of Jota and Silva remained at the forefront throughout the day.
As Claudia Rose Maguire, wife of former Preston player Sean, sang Liverpool anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off, Preston captain Ben Whiteman walked the length of the pitch to lay a wreath in front of the visiting fans with the Bill Shankly Kop dominated by banners and scarves bearing Jota's name.

'I don't see it working' - Man Utd urged to avoid move for £32m Chelsea star

Manchester United have been urged to reconsider a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson as they look to provide Ruben Amorim with more attacking firepower. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, and United are still hoping to bring in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as part of a new-look attack for Amorim next season. In addition, the Red Devils have been keen to add an out-and-out striker, particularly if Rasmus Hojlund were to leave the club. United explored a deal for Liam Delap before he chose to join Chelsea, while Viktor Gyokeres has only had eyes for Arsenal despite the chance to reunite with former boss Amorim. Ollie Watkins and Hugo Ekitike have been linked already this summer, but United are now reportedly one of several clubs considering a move for Chelsea striker Jackson. The Senegal international, who joined from Villarreal for £32million two years ago, has notched up 24 goals and 10 assists in 65 Premier League appearances. However, the 24-year-old finds himself down the pecking order after the arrivals of Delap and Joao Pedro, and as such the Blues are willing to entertain offers. A deal for Jackson may not come from cheap with Chelsea in no need to sell, and former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes the deal may not be in United's interest. 'The problem you have is the lack of number nines and the price goes up,' he told talkSPORT. 'But with some of the strikers Man United have had over the years, I don't think he would get anywhere near the top category.' Alan Brazil, meanwhile, feared that Jackson's wasteful finishing in front of goal would not make him a good match for a United side who struggled greatly to create regular chances last season. 'He can't finish,' the former United striker said. 'Well he can finish but he needs a lot of chances to score. 'And I would say he'd get more chances but Chelsea are a better side than Man United so I don't see it working. You never know and I wish him well but I don't see it working.' More Trending Jackson endured a frustrating spell at the recent Club World Cup, failing to score in the United States and banned for two games after picking up a red card against Flamengo. And given the impressive cameos from Delap and Pedro, Alan Shearer reckons that the writing could be on the wall for Jackson at Stamford Bridge. 'That wouldn't surprise me if he was sold to someone, whether in our country or not, that's one that wouldn't surprise me if they made that decision,' he said on The Rest Is Football Podcast. 'They've got some serious options in every forward position.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Stuart Pearce tells Man Utd and Arsenal to sign 'magnificent' 20-goal forward

Stuart Pearce has 'no doubt' that Manchester United and Arsenal have been looking at a deal to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford this summer. Wissa, who mainly operates as a centre-forward but can also play as a left winger, scored 20 goals for Brentford last season across all competitions. The 28-year-old DR Congo star was linked to Tottenham last month, with Spurs now under the management of former Bees boss Thomas Frank. But Pearce feels Wissa would be a 'major asset' for the likes of United and Arsenal if they were to recruit him in the current summer transfer window. 'There's no doubt Manchester United and Arsenal would have been looking at Yoane Wissa,' Pearce told BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. 'When you look at the season he had last year, he was magnificent. The goals he's delivered while playing with width and playing down the middle as well. 'That's a major asset for any football club and the fact that Nottingham Forest have moved the odd player on recently, along with other sides in the division, you would think that by the time the season starts, he might well have moved on [from Brentford].' It's reported that Brentford want at least £50m to even consider selling Wissa before the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Wissa has played a total of 137 Premier League games for Brentford to date, registering 45 goals and 13 assists. He joined the Bees four years ago from French side Lorient and Wissa is under contract at the Gtech Community Stadium until June 2026, with the option to extend the deal for a further year. Meanwhile, Pearce has advised current Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri, 18, to snub a move to Newcastle United in the summer transfer window. 'Ethan Nwaneri to Newcastle? If I was advising the player, I would advise him to stay at Arsenal and fight for his place for another year because of his age,' Pearce added. More Trending 'Or alternatively, go to a club that you're not gambling on whether you're going to get in the first team or not. 'What he needs to do is play 30 plus games next season and be a regular starter. 'I'm not sure that at Newcastle he'd get those 30 starts, we're not talking about 30 games coming off the bench. 'That is key for the correct move for him.' Lucy Bronze urges England to draw on underdog mentality in Euros quarter-final

The 33-year-old right-back is the most experienced member of Sarina Wiegman's side, having now featured in seven major tournaments since she travelled to Euro 2013 as an uncapped member of Hope Powell's squad. In Switzerland, Bronze's England team-mates have drawn on the Chelsea defender's wisdom as they navigated a rollercoaster group stage, particularly in the wake of their opening defeat to France. MD-1 preparations 💪 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 16, 2025 'We said we're a 'new England', a new team,' said Bronze. 'And what was meant by that was, we had a lot of younger players and new players who have very different experiences of playing for England compared to the likes of myself, where we know that England used to have to dig deep all the time, always. 'Like, 2015 was the first time we beat Germany – that's insane to think of right now. 'But England in the past, it was you have to dig out performances and you are maybe the underdog, you aren't the favourite. Whereas this England team has developed and changed.' After the 2-1 loss to France, which left their campaign hanging by a thread, Bronze reminded her team-mates that England had suffered defeat to the same country at the 2015 World Cup, but then achieved what was then a best-ever third-place finish at a global showpiece. That defeat in Zurich, Bronze agrees, ultimately galvanised the Lionesses, who increasingly spoke about wanting to play like 'proper England' and went on to beat 2017 champions the Netherlands 4-0 and Wales 6-1 to qualify for the last eight as Group D runners-up. She said: 'Obviously we're a very talented team, a lot of technical ability, tactics, all that comes in the game, but we don't ever want to forget that we are England, we are proper England and if push comes to shove, we can win a game in any means possible.' Players from both the England and Sweden camps have suggested the Swedes have flown under the radar. England captain Leah Williamson said the Scandinavians 'deserve more recognition', a sentiment echoed by Sweden's Kosovare Asllani, who told reporters 'people should talk about us more'. England beat Sweden 4-0 in the Euro 2022 semi-final at Bramall Lane, but drew in their two most recent meetings with Peter Gerhardsson's side who – unlike England – have also qualified for this autumn's Nations League semi-finals. Among England's major tournament debutants is goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, also Bronze's team-mate at Women's Super League champions Chelsea, who contributed a highlight-reel pass in the Netherlands victory. 🧤 @hannahhampton_ — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 16, 2025 'She's a very important part of this team,' added Bronze. 'I think she's definitely built with confidence as the tournament has gone on – arguably the best goalkeeper in the world with her feet. 'But there's still a lot more to come from Hannah. She's a very young goalkeeper and she's already doing fantastically well, especially starting her first major tournament. She's a key player for us. 'Like Tooney (Ella Toone) and LJ (Lauren James), she's a player that I think we can see so much more from, just growing and getting even better and better.'
