"Whatever they want to do, let them be held accountable...": Karnataka Minister slams BJP's stance on 'Anti-Communal Task Force'

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 6 (ANI): Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has slammed the BJP over its criticism of the state government's proposed Anti-Communal Task Force and accused the party of fostering communal tensions in the state.
'Whatever BJP wants to do, let them be held accountable for it. How did places like Mangaluru's Karavali and the coastal belt become a laboratory for Hindutva?' Kharge asked.
'How many BJP members are being murdered? It is the poor and backward communities who are getting caught up in this. Why is this vicious cycle of revenge killings happening? Because they (BJP) bred this,' he added.
He was answering a query on BJP's criticism of the proposed Anti-Communal Task Force to be set up by the state government.
Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara had said that the state government will set up Anti-Communal Task Force (ACTF) in the wake of incidents of communal violence in Dakshina Kannada and Udipi districts. He said ACTF would be set up on the lines of the Anti-Naxal Force.
Parameshwara said on Saturday that eight people have been arrested in connection with the Suhas Shetty murder case.
'Around eight people involved in the murder of Suhas Shetty have been arrested. For many years, the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have drawn the attention of the state and the nation due to incidents rooted in communal tensions. This time, too, after the incident, it was feared that communal tensions would resurface, but the police did not allow that to happen,' Parameshwara said at a press conference.
'We will not tolerate any kind of communal forces. Our government is committed to maintaining peace in the area. We are actively investigating these incidents. We will establish an Anti-Communal Task Force similar to our anti-Naxal force. This will be a separate wing with comprehensive authority to address communal activities and those who support them. We have instructed officers to take strict action against anyone who delivers provocative speeches or statements,' Parameshwara added. (ANI)

Today in Politics: An update on SIR revision — from the EC and an appeal by Bihar Chief Electoral Officer
A day after a petition was filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission's (EC) controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the poll panel wrote to Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all other states on July 5, directing them to begin preparations for a similar exercise — this time with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date. The qualifying date mentioned in the letter indicates that while the nationwide exercise may start soon, a final timeline for the rest of the country is yet to be decided — though the aim is to include everyone who turns 18 years of age by January 1, 2026. Since 2003 has been chosen for Bihar as 'probative evidence of eligibility' — meaning voters on the electoral roll that year, when the last intensive revision was done, will be presumed Indian citizens unless proven otherwise — other states are also likely to use the year of their last intensive roll revision as the cut-off for presumption of citizenship for existing voters. For instance, Delhi's electoral roll was last intensively revised in 2008. In its instructions, the Commission — referring to paragraph 10 of its order dated June 24, when it formally announced the SIR in Bihar and said detailed guidelines for the rest of the country would follow — has asked all CEOs to complete 'pre-revision activities.' The EC's letter is significant against the backdrop of the upcoming Assembly elections in 2025 in BJP-ruled Assam; TMC-ruled West Bengal; DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu; and Left-ruled Kerala. The Union Territory of Puducherry will also elect a new Assembly next year. Whether the SIR in these four states — three of which are ruled by Opposition parties at the Centre — will be linked to the Assembly elections next year may depend on how the Supreme Court hearing on the Bihar exercise unfolds. During the hearing on Thursday (July 10), the court raised concerns about the timing of the exercise and whether it could be delinked from the state election. Justice Joymalya Bagchi, part of the two-judge bench, flagged the risk of disenfranchising voters by removing names from the rolls just months before polling, even if the broader objective of cleansing the rolls is legitimate. The Supreme Court eventually declined to restrain the EC from proceeding with its intensive revision of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar but suggested that the poll panel also consider Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration cards for the purpose of updating the rolls. Asked what happens to those voters who have submitted forms without one of the 11 mandated documents for the exercise, Gunjiyal said: 'We took out advertisements in newspapers twice that voters can submit forms with or without one of 11 documents. There is no need to panic — documents can be submitted by August 30. A BLO (Booth Level Officer) will attach those documents with respective uploaded forms. We also know that there's been a surge in domicile applications (one of the 11 documents) by voters. They can submit it to us by 30 August.' On the Supreme Court's suggestions to consider Aadhar, voter ID and ration cards as valid documents for the exercise, he said the ECI's legal team will looking at the suggestions of the Supreme Court. 'ECI goes per mandate of Article 326. We are here to follow ECI's order. There are learned people in Honourable Supreme Court and ECI. Let them discuss and decide. The party, in an application sent to the district magistrate, had said that NC president Farooq Abdullah and other senior functionaries intend to visit the graveyard of 'martyrs' at Naqshband Sahib near Nowhatta on Sunday. 'The District Administration Srinagar has denied permission to all applicants intending to proceed towards Khawaja Bazar, Nowhatta on 13th July 2025 (Sunday),' Srinagar Police said in a public advisory posted on its handle on X. The police said the general public is hereby advised to strictly comply with these instructions and refrain from violating the orders issued by the district administration. 'Any violation of these orders shall invite strict legal action under relevant provisions of law,' the police warned. July 13 used to be a public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir before the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into two Union territories in August 2019. No BJP-ruled State gives BCs quota in local bodies: CM
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy affirmed that Telangana is the first State to implement BC quota by conducting Caste Census. No BJP-ruled State has done such a big exercise for the empowerment of the backward communities in the country so far, the Chief Minister said. A group of Congress leaders from BC community including TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers Konda Surekha, Jupally Krishna Rao, Government Whip Adi Srinivas and Corporation Chairmen met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and expressed gratitude for taking a historical decision of promulgating ordinance to provide 42 percent reservation for BCs in the upcoming Local body elections. He said no BJP-ruled State provided BC quota in local bodies . The Chief Minister pointed out that the BJP had previously filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court against the caste census. Congress had held a big dharna with the support of 16 parties at Jantar Mantar demanding to include BC quota in the 9th schedule. Under pressure, the Centre announced to include caste census in the next population census in the country. The caste census conducted by Telangana influenced the entire country. Demanding the Union government to include BC reservations in the 9th schedule and give it legality, the CM questioned Union Ministers from Telangana - G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay and senior leaders and MPs Laxman and R Krishnaiah for not putting pressure on the Centre on the enhancement of the BC quota. These leaders should show their sincerity. ' Had Rahul Gandhi been in Modi's place, we would have achieved BC quota in just 48 hours,' the Chief Minister said. Stating that he is ready to convene the cabinet meeting even at midnight for BC quota, the Chief Minister said that the opposition parties have no moral right to question me on the issue of BC reservation. 'My commitment cannot be questioned by anyone. The High Court has set a deadline for the government to finalise reservations for local body elections within a month. We postponed the local body elections for so long just to provide 42 per cent reservation to BCs', the CM said. Revanth Reddy also nailed the previous KCR government which brought the Panchayat Raj Act which did not allow increase in BC quota above 50 per cent. The CM called the boycott of the person who filed petitions against BC quota in the courts. Stating that BC quota will be main agenda in the 2029 elections, Revanth Reddy said that he is ready to give a power point presentation to Congress MPs and India Alliance MPs on 42 per cent BC reservations. The CM asserted that the real success will only come when BC quota is implemented in all States.
