SSLC blueprints to now include level of questions from each chapter in Karnataka
Bengaluru: To better guide SSLC students, the department of school education and literacy has decided to let the blueprint for question papers also indicate the level of questions that will be asked from each chapter. "So far, the blueprint published for SSLC only had the number of questions that will come from a particular chapter. But this time, to increase the transparency level in the exam and fix accountability on paper setters, the blueprint will indicate the level of question that is going to come," said a senior official. For example, the blueprint could say there is an average-level one-mark question and a difficult five-mark question from a chapter. The department has also decided to livestream all the exams — ranging from midterms to the three preparatories — so that students "do not have any apprehensions about the actual conduct of paper". SSLC exams were livestreamed in the past two years to ensure the sanctity of the exam is maintained. DC urges enrolment of SSLC non-passers to prevent dropouts
Mandya: With the SSLC exam-3 scheduled from July 5 to 12, deputy commissioner Kumara has stressed the urgent need to enrol students who fail the SSLC examinations into Class 10 to prevent them from discontinuing their education. Presiding over a preparatory meeting at the zilla panchayat here on Thursday, Kumara noted that 4,094 students in the district failed the SSLC exam, of which 3,845 have registered for the upcoming SSLC exam-3. However, 249 students have not yet enrolled, prompting the deputy commissioner to call for special outreach efforts. "Many students who fail tend to drop out and take up jobs. We must bring them back to school, enrol them to Class 10, and prepare them for the next year's exam. This will give them a second chance at success," he said. He directed education officials to compile a list of failed students, convince parents, and facilitate re-admission. Special attention is to be paid to those who have not registered for the exam, ensuring they are not left behind. To improve long-term results, headmasters of schools with less than 50% pass rates will be called for a meeting, and a workshop will be organised to strengthen academic performance and teaching methods. Kumara also reviewed preparations for the exam, which will be held at 12 centres across the district. High school headmasters have been appointed as chief supervisors to ensure smooth and transparent conduct. Route officers will oversee the safe transportation of question papers, with police security and CCTV surveillance in place at all centres. Live webcasting will be monitored directly from the deputy commissioner's office.

Love for Malayalam literature motivates 70-year-old's return to world of letters
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bhageerathi Amma was 105 years old and Karthyayani Amma was 96 when they became poster women of the state's literacy movement by passing its examinations with top marks. Their stories have inspired many elderly persons in the state to return to the world of letters after decades. Chandramani C is one such senior citizen. At the age of 70, she has passed the Class X and also the Class XII equivalency exams with flying colours and going a step further, has also found wings to her literary ambitions. A native of Mampazhakkara in Neyyatinkara taluk of Thiruvananthapuram, Chandramani came to know of the State Literacy Mission's Class X equivalency programme five years ago through her former ward councilor Jaya Dali. Though hesitant at first, it was the firm backing of her husband Sudarshanan K, a daily wage labourer, that prompted the reticent homemaker to give it another try at academics. 'I failed in my SSLC exam when I was 15. This was soon after my mother's death. In those days, failure in Class X exam means a full stop to your academic dreams,' Chandramani said. Her love for Malayalam literature and stories of veterans like Bhageerathi Amma and Karthyayani Amma ignited the fire within her to study again. Though taunted occasionally by members of her age group, Chandramani did not step back.
