DRS of different kind! How cops are using face recognition technology to secure IPL matches
Delhi Police
are now utilising face recognition system (FRS) to detect potential troublemakers.
The cops have deployed two buses equipped with FRS at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
This initiative is particularly important in the backdrop of a threat email received by the Delhi and District Cricket Association about the stadium being bombed. The heightened security measures are also a response to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, which have raised concerns about potential security risks.
According to police, the two FRS-equipped buses have been strategically stationed at two main entry points to the stadium.
One is sited on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and the other on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg. These locations are important, being the busiest routes leading to the stadium. The placement of the buses ensures that security is tightly managed at these key access points.
Each bus is fitted with two cameras that are connected to the FRS technology which facilitates the scanning and identification of individuals based on facial recognition.

Inside the buses, four police personnel are stationed, two to continuously monitor the FRS system and raise alerts if suspects are detected and the other two to interrogate individuals flagged by the system, particularly those with criminal backgrounds.
This dual approach enhances the likelihood of identifying and apprehending potential threats before they enter the stadium, a police officer said.
The FRS system uses a comprehensive database that includes dossiers of known criminals in the National Crime Records Bureau as well as in the police database.
This allows for swift identification and verification of individuals passing through the entry points. To further ensure the effectiveness of the system, the cops periodically send dummy officers to test the real-time functionality of the FRS buses.
M. Harsha Vardhan, DCP (Central), formed several teams under Rajeev Kumar Vats, the station house officer of Indraprastha police station, to oversee the security arrangements.
In addition to using FRS, plainclothes officers have been posted outside the stadium to check sale of tickets in the black. Posing as fans at the stadium, they apprehend unscrupulous elements out to make illegal money. On April 28, with an IPL match scheduled the next day, a 35-year-old man from Jharkhand was arrested for scalping and 10 tickets were recovered from his possession. A day earlier, on match day between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, two men were caught with seven tickets.
Police also dismantled betting rackets and arrested six individuals in two separate cases, recovering over Rs 20 lakh in the process.

Teacher from Kalahandi held for OTET paper leak; total arrests 7
Bhubaneswar: State crime branch on Friday arrested another schoolteacher in connection with the recent question paper leak of the special Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET), with the total number of arrests touching seven. The arrested teacher was identified as Prasant Kumar Khamari (56). Khamari, from Kalahandi district, had a significant role in translating the leaked question papers from English to Odia. He obtained the questions from Jitan Moharana, a previously arrested employee of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), which set the question papers for in-service teachers. "After writing the translated questions and answers in Odia on plain paper, Khamari reached out to potential buyers among in-service teachers. Financial investigation revealed that he transferred about Rs 99,000 via UPI to Bijay Kumar Mishra, a teacher arrested on Wednesday," DIG (crime branch), B Gangadhar, said. Investigations revealed that Mishra had approached Moharana and instigated him to steal the question papers. Moharana allegedly stole the questions from BSE vice-president Nihar Ranjan Mohanty's laptop, crime branch officers said. The test, scheduled for July 20, was postponed after questions and potential answers began circulating on social media the previous day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The investigating agency discovered that the accused collected around Rs 20,000 from each recipient of the leaked questions. Over 200 in-service teachers, who had previously failed OTET, purchased the leaked questions. The crime branch is investigating the alleged negligence of the BSE vice-president. "We have so far not found any criminal liability against him but we are trying to find out how Moharana managed to access the vice-president's laptop," Gangadhar said. School and mass education minister Nityananda Gond said that legal action would be taken against those found guilty. "Our govt has a zero tolerance policy against crime and corruption. The crime branch is thoroughly investigating the case. Regardless of the positions held by the accused, severe legal action will be enforced," the minister said.

Prajwal Revanna conviction: A sex scandal that shook Karnataka
Bengaluru: A folder containing around 50 sleazy videos and more than 2,000 photographs capturing intimate moments with multiple women on a mobile phone marked the rapid downfall of Prajwal Revanna, who was once considered the political successor to former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda in Hassan district. Prajwal found himself in the eye of one of Karnataka's most sensational sex scandals in the run-up to 2024 Lok Sabha polls when videos from his mobile phone ended up becoming public after his former driver downloaded them. While complaints by survivors and testimonies from others played a key role during the trial, it was ultimately Prajwal's own compulsive habit of filming his private moments and storing them on his phone that became crucial evidence for investigators. These explicit digital files — recorded at various resorts, homestays, farmhouses, official quarters and family homes — not only exposed the extent of the sexual abuse but also helped identify about 70 survivors. Even though many of them refrained from formally filing complaints because of social stigma and family pressure, four women, including a 48-year-old domestic help and a political party worker, braved all odds and filed complaints against Prajwal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Best SIP Plans for NRIs in Bosnia And Herzegovina – Get ₹2L Monthly Pension | Invest ₹18K PB Learn More Undo While three accused him of rape, one charged him with sexual harassment. Throughout the controversy, Prajwal and his family members claimed that the videos were doctored and circulated to tarnish their image in Hassan. Union minister HD Kumaraswamy distanced himself from the scandal by stating that his family stayed separately and not with his brother Revanna as speculated.

Trafficking ring busted on Vivek Exp; 27 girls rescued & 5 held
1 2 Guwahati: The Railway Protection Force (RPF), in collaboration with the Government Railway Police (GRP), successfully rescued 27 girls, including three minors, from the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express at New Tinsukia junction, Assam. The operation also led to the arrest of five suspected traffickers, who were allegedly operating under the guise of a private NGO. The suspects, identified as Hemanta Saikia, Mitali Bailong, Swapna Hazarika, Pranjali Baruah, and Jitu Dutta, all hail from Tinsukia. They were apprehended and presented before a local court on Friday. The victims were reportedly being trafficked to Tamil Nadu and intercepted during a routine security check ahead of Independence Day, an RPF official from the New Tinsukia division said on Friday. The incident unfolded on Wednesday night at Dibrugarh railway station when RPF personnel noticed a suspiciously large group of young women traveling together. Upon questioning, the group claimed they were offered jobs at a private company in Tamil Nadu. However, discrepancies between the company list and the passenger list prompted immediate action, leading to their de-boarding at Tinsukia, the officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why enterprise networks need both reach and resilience NetworkWorld | Tata Communications Undo Most of the rescued women, in their twenties, belong to the tea garden communities and local Assamese families from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. Alarmingly, they had been taken without parental consent. Authorities have arranged immediate shelter for the minors and are working to reunite them with their families. GRP officer-in-charge Probhat Saikia confirmed ongoing legal proceedings and investigations aimed at dismantling the broader trafficking network. This operation is part of a larger initiative to combat human trafficking and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals in the northeast, particularly in high-risk transit zones like railway stations.
