Khandre orders crackdown on POP idol sales
Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Minister Khandre emphasized the environmental hazards posed by POP idols. He stated that POP idols are made using calcium sulfate hemihydrate powder, which contains harmful elements such as sulfur, dyes, gypsum, magnesium, and are coated with toxic paints that include mercury, cadmium, lead, and carbon.
When these idols are immersed in water bodies like lakes, ponds, or rivers, they release heavy metals that contaminate the water, affecting human and animal health and causing the death of aquatic life.
To prevent such environmental damage, the Environment Department has been instructed to launch public awareness campaigns.
The minister recalled that in previous years, circulars were issued against the manufacture and sale of POP idols, but since taking office in 2023, he has formalised the prohibition through a government order. Local municipal bodies have been directed to strictly enforce this ban.
With just a month left for the Gauri-Ganesha festival, Minister Khandre has asked authorities to begin immediate action to prevent the transport and storage of POP idols. Furthermore, resident welfare associations in high-rise buildings, housing complexes, and residential layouts have been urged to inform their members to use only eco-friendly idols for worship. Khandre reiterated that community leaders should take responsibility for spreading the message of sustainability and ensure a greener celebration of
the festival.

Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre on Thursday clarified that forest dwellers and tribals will be allowed to graze their livestock in the forest areas. 'Under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, forest dwellers and tribals are allowed to graze their livestock in the forest. However, livestock from neighbouring States would be banned from grazing in the Karnataka's forest areas,' Mr. Khandre said. On July 22, the Minister had directed Forest Department officials to take steps to ban livestock grazing in all forest areas of Karnataka. This order had come in the backdrop of the death of five tigers in the M.M. Hills Wildlife Sanctuary on June 26. A tigress and its four cubs were reported to have died of poisoning by the owner of the cow which was killed by the big cat. Mr. Khandre said that as per Animal Husbandry Department statistics there are about 33,000 cattle within the limits of the M.M. Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. 'Due to this elephants, bison, wild boars, deer etc. are facing a shortage of fodder and water. There is also a risk of infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, and anthrax spreading to wildlife. In the backdrop of this threat, it had been suggested to ban grazing of cattle in the forest as per the law. However, exemption will be given to local cattle and those who have rights under the Forest Rights Act,' he said.

Foundation stone laid for ₹14.75 crore sports complex in Bhalki
Forest Minister and Bidar district In charge Eshwar B. Khandre called upon the youth to stay away from addictions and engage in regular exercise and sports to build a strong and healthy society. He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art sports complex being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹14.75 crore at Bhalki in Bidar district on Saturday. 'While sports entertain spectators, they strengthen the minds and bodies of those who play. Sports train your body and sharpen your intellect, as every game demands a strategy, which keeps the brain active. Simultaneously, the will to win keeps the body active. Thus, sports promote holistic growth of both mind and body,' he said. Citing Swami Vivekananda, Mr. Khandre reminded the gathering that 'one can reach heaven more easily by playing football than by reading the Gita', emphasising that physical strength is fundamental to personal and national well-being. 'Health is indeed wealth,' he added. Explaining the purpose behind building the modern sports facility, the Minister said the goal was to encourage rural youth to actively take part in sports and emerge as champions. 'Talented athletes from this region should begin by winning at the taluk level, excel at the district level, and eventually go on to shine at the national and international levels,' he said. He emphasised the need for identifying hidden talent in rural areas and providing the right infrastructure to nurture it. 'This sports complex will provide the necessary environment for youth to train and grow,' he stated. At the end of the programme, Mr. Khandre administered a unique pledge to the youth urging them to commit to daily exercise, refrain from intoxicants such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and digital addictions like mobile gaming and betting, and instead focus on becoming knowledgeable, responsible, and patriotic citizens. The Minister concluded by reiterating that an addiction-free, environmentally conscious, and physically fit youth is the foundation for a vibrant and progressive society.
