Alkhidmat holds interviews for Bano Qabil 4.0 Programme
The interviews, held at Idara Noor-e-Haq, saw a large turnout of enthusiastic youth. Candidates were assessed on their academic background and guided toward appropriate IT and tech-related courses.
Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Monem Zafar Khan, visited the venue, accompanied by Alkhidmat Karachi Executive Director Rashid Qureshi. The duo interacted with students, discussed their course preferences, and expressed encouragement.
Monem praised the initiative, calling Bano Qabil a 'serious and effective effort to equip youth with modern skills and employment opportunities.' He urged students to work diligently and contribute to national development through their expertise in technology.
Rashid Qureshi highlighted that interviews for female students would begin Sunday, May 25, and that the summer session is set to commence after Eid-ul-Azha. He encouraged all eligible students to seize this opportunity for skill development and career growth.

Govt's ban on plastic bags goes unnoticed

PHOTO: EXPRESS The use and sale of plastic shopping bags continue unabated across Hyderabad despite a province-wide ban imposed by the Sindh government from June 15. Banned plastic bags are still being used openly at grocery stores, general shops, and franchise outlets. The Sindh government has announced a complete ban on the manufacturing, sale, and use of all types of plastic shopping bags including non-degradable, oxo-degradable, black-coloured, and recycled bags in an effort to reduce environmental pollution and drainage blockages. A formal notification has also directed strict enforcement and legal action against violators. However, even after more than two weeks, implementation on the ground remains ineffective. Hyderabad DC Zain-ul-Abideen Memon, issued directives on June 19 to all assistant commissioners in the district to fully cooperate with the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to ensure enforcement of the ban. Additional Deputy Commissioner-II Saba Israr also sent a letter to the director information, urging public awareness campaign advising citizens to avoid use of plastic bags and use cloth or paper bags instead. SEPA Regional Director Hyderabad, Imran Ali Abbasi, has claimed that the sale of plastic bag at the wholesale level has been halted and the local authorities have been directed to curb their usage at retail shops. He added that SEPA teams are actively visiting markets, issuing notices to shopkeepers, and distributing pamphlets to spread awareness. Reports indicate that Hyderabad has 107 wholesale plastic bag shops, including 65 in Tower Market, nine in Qasimabad, six in Faqir Ka Pir, 10 in Latifabad, two in Preetabad, and 15 in Tando Jam. This is not the first time such a ban has been introduced. In March 2018, the Sindh govt enforced Section 144 to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and use of plastic bags. Later, in November 2018, a phased ban was approved by the provincial cabinet. The latest ban, which came into effect on June 15, 2025, marks the third such attempt, yet meaningful implementation remains elusive.

Agenda of sustainable economic progress being implemented: Ahsan
LAHORE: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said on Monday the government is implementing an agenda of sustainable economic progress. 'The government is pursuing a goal of achieving taking economy of Pakistan to one trillion dollar by the year 2035,' Ahsan said, adding: 'Our development model is to transform economic development through exports.' While inaugurating a modern classroom at the Pakistan Administrative Staff College (PASC)/ National School of Public Policy (NSPP) here Monday, Ahsan presented a comprehensive roadmap for governance reforms and institutional performance improvement, emphasising the transition from a procedure-focused to a mission-driven bureaucracy. 'The country is facing a crucial moment requiring data-driven, technology-enabled and accountable governance,' he said, adding: 'We must build institutions that are policy-consistent and shielded from political volatility, ensure transparency in decision-making, foster agility to respond to changing demands and instil responsibility in the use of public resources.' Ahsan Iqbal outlined the government's long-term economic vision under the banner of 'URAAN Pakistan', which aims at making Pakistan a $1 trillion economy by 2035. He said the strategy is built on the five pillars of the 5Es: Exports, E-Pakistan, Environment, Energy & Infrastructure and Equity & Empowerment. The minister said steps are being taken to restore public confidence in good governance, by following the policy of making bureaucracy a stable, transparent, agile and responsible. He also urged the officers to play a leading role in enabling export-led growth, digitising government operations, building climate resilience, improving infrastructure delivery and ensuring inclusive development. He said the civil servants must play their vital role for Pakistan's transformation, adding that the system must be reformed to deliver better outcomes. He introduced the STAR model — Stable, Transparent, Agile and Responsible — as a governance framework to guide civil service transformation. He commended the role of civil servants to make the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) a success which showed the dedication of Pakistan's civil servants. He reminded the participants that public service is a responsibility and leadership in Islam is a duty, not a privilege. TDAP charts export roadmap for olive sector
LORALAI: The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), in collaboration with the Agriculture Department Government of Balochistan, FAO, and the Taraqee Foundation, organised a strategic awareness session at the Municipal Hall, Loralai to highlight the export potential of Balochistan's olive sector and align it with international market requirements. Delivering the keynote address, Zain-ul-Abideen, National Product Officer (Olives), TDAP, presented a detailed trade analysis showing that Pakistan's olive exports have grown over 600% in five years, increasing from 15 tons in 2020 to 160 tons in 2024. He emphasized that while this growth is promising, Pakistan must shift from low-value bulk exports to branded, certified premium olive oils to unlock its fair share in the $14 billion global olive oil market. He identified strategic markets in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Middle East, where rising demand for extra virgin olive oil offers immense opportunities. The session concluded with a unified call for scaling up certification, processing capacity, and branding efforts. Stakeholders emphasized that with TDAP's continued leadership and inter-agency coordination, Loralai can emerge as Pakistan's leading olive oil export zone, contributing to national trade growth and rural economic transformation.
