KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd has secured two infrastructure contracts in Taiwan worth a total of RM4.28 billion, marking its eighth and ninth project wins in the country. The latest RM3.72 billion contract, awarded on June 30, involves the construction of a wharf and connecting roads for the Kaohsiung Port Intercontinental LNG terminal. Gamuda holds a 70 percent stake in the joint venture with Dong Pi Co Ltd and the project is expected to be completed in five years. The scope includes 2.2km of seawall, a 729m wharf, 1.2km of bridges, and several unloading and access platforms. In March, Gamuda also won a RM557.2 million underground transmission line project involving 3.2km of cable tunnel construction through a 50:50 JV with Feng Shun Construction, scheduled for completion in 44 months. Gamuda said the consecutive wins reflect its growing reputation and capability in Taiwan's infrastructure sector, where it has been active since 2002. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit steady vs US dollar ahead of Federal Open Market Committee meeting
Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8 am, the local note was slightly higher at 4.2300/2400 against the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.2320/2365. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit was little changed against the US dollar on Wednesday morning as traders adopted a wait-and-see approach ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which will be unfolding tonight, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note was slightly higher at 4.2300/2400 against the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.2320/2365. It was reported that FOMC is expected to leave rates unchanged and the focus will be on whether Fed chair Jerome Powell offers any hint of a September rate cut. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose to 98.886 points as markets brace themselves for the FOMC decision. He noted that US data points continued to paint a mixed picture, with the Jobs Opening and Labour Turnover Survey (JOLTS) reporting that the number of job openings in June fell to 7.44 million from 7.51 million in the prior month, lower than consensus estimates of 7.71 million. Meanwhile, the US Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index improved to 97.2 points in July from 95.2 points previously. Concerns over higher prices due to imports, nevertheless, remained foremost among American consumers, he said. 'What this means to the foreign exchange market is that there could be support for the DXY as the Fed is unlikely to cut the interest rates in the immediate term,' he said. On a more positive note, Mohd Afzanizam said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its 2025 global gross domestic product (GDP) forecast to 3.0 per cent from 2.8 per cent. Similarly, for Malaysia, the economic growth projection has been raised to 4.5 per cent from 4.1 per cent. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah eyes top spot as regional deep-sea fisheries hub
Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji with other distinguished guests at the signing ceremony of the memorandum of agreement (MoA) between City Hall (DBKK) and AORB. - Pic by CMD KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is on track to become a leading regional hub for deep-sea fisheries, supported by its strategic location and natural advantages. The state lies along international tuna migration routes and is close to major seafood-producing nations such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea. A new RM360 million investment by Alpha Ocean Resources Berhad (AORB) will see the development of a European Union-standard port in Kota Kinabalu dedicated to tuna and deep-sea fish landings. The port, expected to be completed within 18 months, will create over 1,000 jobs across the industry's value chain and meet stringent food safety and sustainability standards. Malaysia's membership in the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission will allow the port to serve as an authorised landing point for registered international fishing vessels. Sabah is projected to land 50,000 tonnes of tuna annually through this facility, generating up to RM1.8 billion in economic value, alongside support services such as bunkering, ice supply, and technical services. In a related development, the City Hall signed a memorandum with Petco Trading Labuan Company Ltd to develop a biogas power facility in Kayu Madang landfill, producing 2MW of clean energy for local industries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabahans in key Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce posts
Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: L/R: Dexter, Coral, Lau, Michael and Josephine. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has marked a significant milestone with several of its business leaders appointed to top national-level positions in the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC). The latest reshuffle at national level sees MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau elected as Chairman of the MCCC National Business Sectors Committee, the first Sabahan to hold the influential post. Dexter, who also helms the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, is now tasked with leading policy direction across sectors and building high-impact collaborations between Malaysian businesses and Chinese counterparts. 'This role is a responsibility, not just a recognition. It gives Sabah a wider voice nationally and allows us to bring more attention, resources, and investment to the East Malaysian region,' he said. He said the Sabah team's elevation reflects a growing appreciation of the state's strategic potential and its readiness to contribute to national economic direction. Alongside Dexter, business leader Coral Chia was appointed Vice Chairperson of the Business Sectors Committee. A long-time MCCC national council member, she is expected to work closely with Dexter in strengthening the committee's output. Her appointment also continues the legacy of her mother, Datuk See Meng Geok, who currently serves as MCCC Vice President and has long played an advisory role in national matters. Meanwhile, MCCC Sabah Founding President and Honorary Life Adviser Datuk Lau Kok Sing retains his position as National Affairs Advisor, continuing to offer strategic counsel on policy and institutional development. Also appointed to the national council is Datuk Michael Chin, another former MCCC Sabah President, who now serves as a National Vice President. His years of experience in bilateral business engagement are seen as key to further deepening enterprise-level links. Adding legal strength to the national team is Josephine Wan Wen Hadikusumo, appointed as National Internal Auditor. A senior Sabah-based legal practitioner, her role will focus on governance and compliance within the organisation. Dexter said the appointments mark a turning point for Sabah in terms of visibility and contribution on the national stage. 'We will continue to speak up for East Malaysia and ensure we are fully part of Malaysia's economic conversations,' he said. The MCCC is a key platform facilitating Malaysia-China trade, with branches across the country and deep linkages to industries, entrepreneurs, and policymakers in both nations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
