Americans' optimism on the job market is starting to wane

Yahoo24-06-2025
The latest read on consumer confidence showed that, right now, Americans aren't as hopeful about the labor market as they used to be. It's a soft data point that could be an indicator of potential economic weakness ahead. Yahoo Finance Anchor Julie Hyman takes a closer look at the labor market differential in the video above.

One of the real issues for the Federal Reserve, putting inflation aside for a moment, is what is going to happen for the labor market. Of course, that's the other big part of their dual mandate. And we've had an increasing number of fed officials themselves as well as economists who have been pointing to maybe some underlying signs of weakness in the labor market. One of those signs is made evident in survey data that came out from the conference board and it showed the so-called labor differential. This is the difference between those who were surveyed who said jobs were plentiful or easy to get and those who said jobs were hard to get. The difference between those, again, referred to as the labor differential, 11.1 percentage points was the lowest that we have seen in more than four years since March of 2021. Now, again, this is what some economists will call soft data versus hard data, right? It is what someone is saying they think or feel versus what is actually happening in the labor market, say the uh the monthly jobs report, for example. But nonetheless, it is yet another sign that some economists are pointing to. One of them is Neil Dutta. Uh he says consumers do not seem to share with the characterization that labor market conditions are solid. That is the way that some officials, including J. Powell of the Fed have been characterizing those labor market conditions. So this is something that we are going to continue to watch and see if it does start showing up in that hard data.

Rupee to weaken after 'rare' positive news for dollar from US jobs report

By Nimesh Vora MUMBAI(Reuters) -The Indian rupee is set to decline at open on Friday after data showed the U.S. labour market remained resilient, fuelling a rally in the dollar and pushing up Treasury yields. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated an open in the 85.46 to 85.50 range, versus 85.31 in the previous session. "The 85.30 level is a major support (for USD/INR), and the U.S. jobs data just reinforces that it's unlikely to break below that level in a hurry," a currency dealer at a Mumbai-based bank. "The dollar's broad recovery and the U.S. yield move have locked in that floor for now." U.S. data on Thursday showed non-farm payrolls rose more than forecast in June, while the unemployment rate unexpectedly dipped, highlighting ongoing labour market strength. Treasury yields climbed, lifting the dollar against major peers, while markets dialled back expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut at this month's meeting. The jobs data is a 'rare piece of good news" for the U.S. dollar, Richard Potts, economist at FX advisory firm Bondford, said. "The data reduces the likelihood of the US Fed cutting rates at the July (meeting), maintaining the rate advantage U.S. has over other major economies," he said, while noting that just days earlier, Fed Chair Jerome Powell had kept the door open to a July cut, which had weighed on the dollar. Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives narrowly passed U.S. President Donald Trump's spending and tax cuts bill that is estimated to add $3.4 trillion to the nation's $36.2 trillion debt. "The question is how much of the bill's passage was already priced in," said Chris Weston, head of research at broker Pepperstone. Weston said the longer segment of the Treasury curve needs to be tracked for any rise in the term premium before making a call. Child tax credit gets small boost in Trump's tax bill, but millions of families are left out

The popular child tax credit will receive a slight boost from President Trump's signature tax and spending bill — but there are caveats. Currently, taxpayers who make under $200,000 annually as a single filer, or $400,000 if filing jointly, can qualify for a partially refundable credit of up to $2,000 for each child they claim as a dependent who is under age 17 and a US citizen or qualifying noncitizen. The new legislation increases the credit to a maximum $2,200 per child. Without the bill, the maximum credit would have reverted to $1,000. But the increase, which amounts to a 10% bump, follows years of rising prices that have chipped away at the value of the original benefit. And many extremely low-income children — in addition to US citizen kids of undocumented parents — will be locked out of the payments altogether. 'If you're already receiving the full credit amount, then you will benefit from this,' Joe Hughes, a senior analyst at the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, told Yahoo Finance. 'If you're not, then you probably won't benefit.' Read more: Child tax credit: Everything you need to know By subscribing, you are agreeing to Yahoo's Terms and Privacy Policy To qualify for the refundable portion of the child tax credit, which is called the 'additional child tax credit' and can be worth up to $1,700, taxpayers must earn at least $2,500 in annual income. (A refundable tax credit can lower tax liability past zero, potentially generating a refund.) Families who make less than that receive no benefit, while many more children are in low-income households that earn just enough to receive part of the benefit but not enough to receive the full payment. Due to those income restrictions, an estimated 17 million children are unable to receive the full child tax credit, according to the Tax Policy Center, a left-leaning think tank. The average benefit for taxpayers with children who made between $10,000 and $20,000 in 2022, for example, was $800, according to the Congressional Research Service. That pay range includes people who worked full-time jobs at the federal minimum wage. Families earning between $200,000 and $500,000, meanwhile, saw an average benefit of $2,810. Households where both parents lack a Social Security number — undocumented immigrants, including those whose children have a Social Security number and are US citizens — will also be shut out under the new law. 'We are excluding some of the most vulnerable kids that have very, very high poverty rates," said Dolores Acevedo-Garcia, a professor at the Boston University School of Social Work. About 1.8 million children live in households where both parents are undocumented, she added. There was a point when the benefits were less restrictive and more broadly accessible. Through the 2021 pandemic-era American Rescue Plan, the child tax credit was temporarily expanded from $2,000 to up to $3,600 per child in what some scholars and advocates hailed as one of the country's greatest-ever antipoverty measures. Combined with stimulus payments, the tax credit hike helped slash child poverty rates by 46%, pushing them to their lowest level on record. When the child tax credit expansion lapsed at the end of 2021, those gains were reversed. At the time, the credit was fully refundable, meaning even the lowest-income families qualified. As for the new tax bill, 'basically what it's doing is giving wealthier families a small boost,' said Adam Ruben, director of Economic Security Project Action, a left-leaning advocacy group. 'But for lower-income and working-class families, they get nothing.' Emma Ockerman is a reporter covering the economy and labor for Yahoo Finance. Rare new $2 coin sparks major warning over $599 ask: 'No guarantee'

Australians are being urged to only buy rare coins from registered dealers. The warning comes after a new $2 coin was released by the Royal Australian Mint this week that celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander flag. It didn't take long for some people to start selling the commemorative coins on eBay for more than five times the price. The Mint told Yahoo Finance you need to have your wits about you when shopping for coins. "The Mint recommends only purchasing through its authorised channels," it said. Rare $2 coins worth up to $350 amid huge spike in demand Superannuation 'red alert' for millions as $1 billion in retirement savings feared lost Woolworths payment change hits dozens of supermarkets There are three products you can buy from authorised sellers for the 2025 $2 Torres Strait Islander flag coin. You can get just one of the gold coins, which is presented in a capsule in a presentation card. There have only been 100,000 of these minted and they cost between $20 to 22. You can buy a roll of 25 coins for between $90 to $100, and there are only 15,000 of them available. Or, you can get a silver proof version of the commemorative coin for around $80. There have only been 7,500 of these minted and they also come housed in a presentation case with an outer sleeve and numbered certificate of if you have a look on eBay, those prices have been heavily inflated. One seller is trying to offload a roll of the $2 coins for $599 plus $65 in postage fees. Another is selling two of the silver $2 coins for a combined $440. Even though they come with certificates of authenticity, it's still far above the retail price. Many are offering prices in the $300s for just one silver coin too. "There is no guarantee on quality or authenticity of products purchased from unauthorised sellers," the Royal Australian Mint spokesperson told Yahoo Finance. "Any listings prior to the official release date are considered illegitimate." The coin was designed to represent 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander flag being officially recognised as one of Australia's national flags. The flag is represented on the obverse side of the coin, while the head side has an effigy of King Charles. The blue symbolises the ocean, the green represents the land, and the black pays homage to the Torres Strait Islander people. Royal Australian Mint acting chief executive Emily Martin said the new coin was "a meaningful tribute to culture, identity and resilience" and a "proud reminder" of the strength and spirit of the Torres Strait Islander people. Torres Strait Island Regional Council Mayor Phillemon Mosby was thrilled to see his people immortalised on national currency. 'To see our flag represented in such a historic and widely recognised way is a proud moment for all Torres Strait Islanders,' he said. The coin will be available for purchase from July 3 at The Mint Shop in Deakin, Canberra, as well as from selected authorised distributors, which you can find in to access your portfolio
