Ravichandran Ashwin and Dindigul Dragons cleared of ball tampering allegations after TNPL finds no evidence
Shijit Chandran, Madurai's coach lodged a complaint, stating, 'The ball's condition deteriorated rapidly during our innings, affecting our batsmen's performance. You can hear the sound of every shot our batters played after the powerplay, which were as if they were hitting hard stone instead of a cricket ball.'
The complaint, originally sent to Madurai's CEO Pooja Damodaran and later forwarded to the TNPL, further alleged, 'We are of the view that the Dindigul Dragons team used foreign substances to alter the ball's condition, including using special towels with a pre-applied roughening agent, which is unacceptable and against the spirit of the game, and amounts to cheating.'
TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan announced that no evidence supported the claims. 'The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams,' Kannan stated.
'The Playing Control Team, including umpires and the match referee, maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature.'
Kannan also noted procedural violations by Madurai, as their complaint was filed over 24 hours after the match and not directly to the TNCA honorary secretary, rendering it 'inadmissible.' However, in the interest of 'transparency and fairness,' the TNPL reviewed the matter after forwarding it to the honorary secretary and Dindigul.
Madurai has until 3 PM on June 17, 2025, to submit credible evidence, such as video, photographic, or testimonial material, for an Independent Commission of Enquiry. Failure to provide proof could lead to sanctions under the TNCA's code of conduct and operational rules.
In the match in question, Dindigul Dragons chased down Madurai's 151 in under 13 overs, led by openers R Ashwin and Shivam Singh.
The defending champions, who won their first TNPL title last season, secured their second victory in TNPL 2025, showcasing their dominance.

Jitesh Sharma To Leave Vidarbha, Set To Join RCB's Teammate's Side: Report
Though Jitesh Sharma remained in Vidarbha's white-ball squads under Karun Nair, opportunities in red-ball cricket dried up. Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma is set to part ways with Vidarbha after representing the team in domestic cricket for more than a decade. He will turn up for Baroda in the upcoming season. The 31-year-old didn't play a single Ranji Trophy match in 2024-25, warming the bench behind Vidarbha skipper and first-choice keeper Akshay Wadkar. Though he remained in their white-ball squads under Karun Nair, opportunities in red-ball cricket dried up. According to ESPN Cricinfo, the move to Baroda had been in the works for a while, and his good rapport with Baroda captain Krunal Pandya played a role in facilitating the transfer. Both of them won a maiden IPL title for Royal Challengers Bengaluru earlier this year. The shift is expected to open the door for Jitesh to revive his red-ball career. Since debuting for Vidarbha in 2015-16, the keeper-batter has played just 18 first-class matches, averaging 24.48 with four fifties. His last red-ball appearance came nearly 18 months ago. Jitesh has, however, made a name for himself in the shorter formats. After a breakthrough IPL with Punjab Kings in 2023, he earned his India T20I cap during the Asian Games later that year. He has featured in nine T20Is so far. He played a crucial role for RCB as a finisher in IPL 2025 and also step into the captain's shoes when Rajat Patidar got injured. The report further stated that Swapnil Singh, Jitesh's RCB teammate, is also on the move. The spin-bowling all-rounder is set to join Tripura ahead of the new season. Swapnil, who was RCB's only RTM pick at the mega auction, didn't get a game in IPL 2025. He last played domestic cricket for Uttarakhand, taking 18 wickets in five Ranji matches in 2024-25. His white-ball form, though, remained modest. A regular in Chennai's club circuit, Swapnil most recently played for Chepauk Super Gillies in TNPL 2025, picking up three wickets and scoring 85 runs across eight matches. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ashwin Criticizes Umpire Reiffel for Poor Decisions in Lord's Test
Indian former offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticized and took a dig at the on-field umpire Paul Reiffel for his decisions during the Lord's Test between India and England. The former India spinner expressed frustration over two key moments where Reiffel's calls went against India. First, Reiffel turned down a clear LBW appeal against Joe Root, which replays later showed would have hit the stumps. Root survived due to umpire's call, leaving the Indian players visibly unhappy. Later, Reiffel gave Shubman Gill out caught behind despite a clear gap between bat and ball. Though DRS overturned the decision, the call raised further doubts about the umpiring. Ashwin pointed out a pattern of decisions that seem to consistently go against India and questioned whether the ICC should step in. Other former cricketers like Anil Kumble and Sunil Gavaskar have also raised concerns over Reiffel's officiating in the match, adding to the controversy.
