Gangavaram-NH-16 corridor and Bhogapuram access route proposals will be fast-tracked, says NHAI Chairman

The Hindu17-07-2025
Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao met NHAI Chairman Santhosh Kumar Yadav in New Delhi, seeking expedited sanction and implementation of the long-pending Gangavaram Port–NH-16 connectivity road via Tungalam.
They said that despite the completion of a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR), the project was shelved by the previous YSRCP government, resulting in crippling port access, worsening urban congestion, and missed economic opportunities for the region.
With Gangavaram Port's cargo throughput expected to surge from 2,500 to over 6,000 trucks per day, the current Gajuwaka corridor, which is dotted by dense residential zones, is now functionally obsolete.
The proposed alignment, formulated through exhaustive studies, strategically passes through industrial and railway lands, ensuring minimal displacement while offering a dedicated high-capacity logistics artery.
In addition to pressing for the port road, the TDP leaders urged the NHAI to extend the existing highway infrastructure with grade-separated flyovers towards Bhogapuram International Airport, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity between Visakhapatnam city, the port, and the upcoming airport.
The proposed extension would ease traffic chokepoints and support Visakhapatnam as a multi-modal logistics and aviation hub on India's eastern seaboard.
Mr. Sribharat emphasised the urgent need to remove bottlenecks that have held back Visakhapatnam's rise as a modern port city. He said the city's future lies in integrated connectivity, and that the road to Bhogapuram must match the standards of upcoming greenfield airports across India.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao echoed this urgency, stating that infrastructure decisions must not be mired in politics or neglect. He said that the TDP was committed to restoring long-delayed projects and pushing for coordination between the State and the Centre.
Mr. Santhosh Kumar Yadav acknowledged the delays and assured the delegation that both the Gangavaram–NH-16 corridor and the Bhogapuram access route proposals would be reviewed with priority, with sanctioning and planning to be fast-tracked.

HC asks for trial court order in Pawan Kalyan defamation case

Vijayawada: The high court on Friday asked the petitioners to file a certified copy of the trial court order allowing the withdrawal of prosecution against deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan in the case registered over his alleged objectionable comments made on volunteers. K Sarala, along with three others, moved the court challenging the trial court orders and sought directions to prosecute Pawan for making defamatory remarks on volunteers. A criminal defamation case was filed under sections 499 and 500 of the IPC against Pawan in a Guntur court after he made certain remarks over missing women in Andhra Pradesh during his Varahi Yatra. He said he received information from intelligence sources that the personal data of citizens collected by volunteers landed in the hands of anti-social elements involved in human trafficking, and it was one of the reasons behind the high number of missing cases of women in AP. However, after the NDA govt came to power, five volunteers, who were also complainants in the case, deposed before the trial court stating that YSRCP leaders took their signatures and filed petitions before the court without their knowledge. Considering the affidavits and statements given by the complainants, the trial court allowed the withdrawal of prosecution.

YSRCP calls stampede probe report ‘biased' and ‘predetermined'

1 2 Vijayawada: Calling the one-man judicial commission report on the Tirupati stampede incident "biased" and "predetermined", opposition YSRCP on Friday demanded a probe by the CBI probe into the entire thing. Six persons died and over 30 were injured in the stampede on the evening of Jan 8 just before the Vaikuntha Ekadashi festival in Tirumala. Former TTD chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy claimed that the report seems to have spared the main persons and made a few lower-rung officials scapegoats. The state cabinet on Thursday accepted the report submitted by retired high court judge, Justice M Satyanarayana Murthy, on the stampede. "The report seems to be predetermined as it has let off the main persons responsible for the incident, but has selectively picked two persons and made them scapegoats. The entire process is a precursor to the various vigilance and other commission reports that would be released in the coming days," the senior YSRCP leader said, alleging that the probe report seems to be an eyewash and a case study for all future inquiries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He said the YSRCP govt had introduced extended darshan for 10 days for the convenience of devotees after consulting religious heads, but that practice was done away with by the NDA govt in the state which did not make proper arrangements for the lakhs of devotees who came for the Vaikuntha dwara darshan.
