Ramanagara District To Be Renamed 'Bengaluru South', Says DK Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday announced that Ramanagara district will be renamed as 'Bengaluru South' for all administrative purposes.
While speaking to the reporters after a cabinet meeting, DK Shivakumar stated, "From today, it has been announced in the cabinet that Ramanagara will be renamed Bengaluru South. All the headquarters will be in Ramanagara".
"Today, the entire cabinet had a discussion. I am very happy to announce that Ramanagara district was a part of Bengaluru district, the headquarters will remain in Ramanagara, but the district will be called Bengaluru South for all administrative purposes..."
Meanwhile, on his earlier reported statement regarding "wedding gift" by State's Home Minister G Parameshwara to gold smuggling case accused, actor Ranya Rao, Shivakumar said, "It is not a controversy. Why should it be a controversy? I just checked with Dr G Parameshwara. He said that there were some weddings and he gave it at the time of those weddings. That is what I know...She may be an accused, it is a crores of Rupees scandal. We don't want to interfere with or support anyone. G Parameshwara never supported anyone at any point in time. She is known to an officer who was working with him, I think he might have helped her on the occasion of the wedding, in the form of giving her a gift or something. That is what I asked him. As the party president, I had to ask him that..."
Earlier in the day, G Parameshwara asserted that he is "prepared to cooperate" with whatever the outcome of the probe.
"Yesterday, ED officers visited our institutions--Siddhartha Institute of Technology, Siddhartha Medical College at Tumkur, Siddhartha Medical College at Begur and Siddhartha Academy of Higher Education. I instructed my staff to cooperate with them and give whatever information they asked for...They questioned our accounts section. The search is still going on," G Parameshwara said.
"Being a person who believes in the law of the country, whatever comes out of the verification or search, I am prepared to cooperate," he said.
Parameshwara refused to comment when asked about the reports linking these searches to the Actor Ranya Rao gold smuggling case."I don't want to comment at this point in time. Let the investigation be completed," he said.
Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport after officials from the DRI found her carrying gold.
On Tuesday, the Economic Offences Court granted conditional bail to the Kannada actor in the smuggling case.

Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti slams use of teachers for caste census
HUBBALLI: Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti has strongly opposed deploying teachers to conduct the upcoming caste census in the state. He has suggested to the State Government to use 10% of the staff from all departments to avoid disturbing the functioning of the Education Department. In a strongly worded letter to the State Government, Horatti expressed deep anguish over the declining quality of school education, blaming systemic flaws and the overburdening of teachers with non-academic duties as the key reasons. He opposed the government's move to deploy school teachers, especially those from primary and high schools, for the upcoming caste census, warning that such practices will harm students' academic foundation. Referring to a study conducted in Yadgir district under the Education Department's foundational literacy and numeracy initiative, Horatti said it was shocking to discover that many SSLC students still lacked basic skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. He stressed that the failure to build foundational literacy in primary school is a serious indictment of the current system and demanded accountability. 'When SSLC students do not know Kannada or English alphabet and cannot even perform basic addition or subtraction, we must ask, who is responsible?' Horatti said, adding that teachers are unable to focus on teaching due to being repeatedly pulled into non-teaching roles such as surveys, census work, and election duties. 'Teachers are made to handle caste surveys, flood assessments, child enumeration, polling officer duties and more. With all this, when can they actually teach?' he asked. Calling it a violation of the spirit of Article 21 A of the Constitution, which guarantees free and compulsory education to all children aged 6 to 14, Horatti urged the government to relieve teachers of non-academic duties immediately.

Mahajan Commission report on Karnataka-Maharashtra border row is final, asserts H.K. Patil

Patil has said that there was no reason for Kannadigas to be concerned over cases pertaining to the Karnataka-Maharashtra border row before the Supreme Court, as it was a constitutional issue and no decision yet had been taken on taking up the case for hearing. He was chairing a meeting of Kannada organisations at in Belagavi on Saturday. 'The language row is a poll issue in Maharashtra. So there is no need to panic over it. Honouring the federal system in the country, Karnataka accepted the formation of Mahajan Commission. Our stand is that the commission's report is the sole solution to the border row. You have to accept the report, otherwise the status quo should continue. This is our government's firm stand,' he said. The Minister said the bonhomie between Kannadigas and Marathi-speaking people is a model to the whole nation. Those who rake up language row should understand it and keep quiet, he said. He said that steps would be taken to address the injustice being caused to Kannadigas in Goa and the issue would also be raised with the Union government. On cases against Kannada activists, he said that certain procedures would have to be followed and the attention of the concerned persons would be drawn towards it. Steps would also be taken to strengthen Kannada schools in the border areas by holding a detailed discussion with the Education Minister on the issue with a delegation from Belagavi, he said. Representatives of various Kannada organisations aired their grievances and contentious issues and also gave suggestions. Various legislators and senior officials were present.
