Toyota Unleashes Stripped-Down, Two-Seater Land Cruiser with Massive Cargo

Land Cruiser may be synonymous with luxury for those of us in the States, but it isn't that way everywhere
Toyota's Land Cruiser model has always been a bit of an 'if you know, you know' thing in the United States. Those who do know recognize it as among the most luxurious cars to wear a Toyota or Lexus badge. But overseas, the Land Cruiser nameplate offers a much wider variety. From modern two-door models to diesel powertrains, there's a Land Cruiser model with your name on it, no matter how you like to get down. For the latest round of 'stuff that the US doesn't get,' Toyota introduced a bare-bones Land Cruiser Commercial model that comes with everything you need and little you don't.

The Land Cruiser Commercial is a diesel-only two-seater prioritizing utility
Where the new Land Cruiser is arguably a step down from the opulence the model once represented, the Land Cruiser Commercial fully embraces utility over extravagance. Toyota says it's perfect for 'customers who do not require the load-carrying capabilities or additional seats of the Hilux pick-up,' and the changes reflect that. They pull the back seats, allowing the Land Cruiser Commercial to boast 71 cubic feet of cargo space, nearly double what the regular five-seater offers. Instead of a cushy bench, you'll find accommodations like steel panels and a metal partition keeping cargo far removed from the front seat. Under the hood, the Land Cruiser Commercial utilizes the same 2.8-liter diesel engine that other UK-market Cruisers come with. Towing capacity, similarly, remains unchanged at 7,716 pounds.
Although calling the rear appointments spartan might be an overstatement, there's plenty for the driver and passenger to enjoy. The Land Cruiser Commercial comes with more amenities than previous commercialized versions of the Land Cruiser. Toyota added blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors alongside creature comforts like dual-zone climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, all of which are far from standard in the 'work truck' segment. The Land Cruiser Commercial, true to its heritage, also comes ready to tackle off-road adventures. Crawl Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, and Downhill Assist Control are all standard, as is permanent all-wheel drive.

The Land Cruiser Commercial could be perfect for no-frills shoppers in the US, but alas
The Land Cruiser Commercial is cool, but sadly, it's only available outside the US. Specifically, the UK. With a starting price of £51,729, it's around £26,000 cheaper than the regular Cruiser. Even if the discount wasn't one-for-one with US pricing — our Cruiser starts at less than $60,000 — a $45,000 work truck spec would be awesome to have. The work SUV segment could use a shakeup, in our eyes. After all, there's only a handful of options, and most of them are from domestic automakers. Of course, with a diesel engine under the hood, the chances of coming to the US hover somewhere around 'not even a consideration' and 'never happening.'
Final thoughts
It happens all the time, but the heartbreak doesn't get easier. The Land Cruiser Commercial is an off-road-ready work truck that would also be an overlander's dream come true. Just look at all that space in the back for a bed platform! The Land Cruiser nameplate, unfortunately, carries a bit more cache for luxury Stateside, and that's just another reason it won't ever come to our side of the pond. But we can dream, can't we?

Major vehicle recall issued across Europe

Stellantis is recalling diesel cars produced between October 2017 and January 2023 across Europe due to potential camshaft chain issues. The recall affects Peugeot, Citroën, Opel/Vauxhall, DS, and Fiat vehicles equipped with the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine. The issue can cause premature wear, abnormal noise, and potential breakage of the camshaft chain, though no related accidents or injuries have been reported. The rework involves a software update and, if needed, an oil change, with a new application developed to detect chain problems by analysing engine noise. Stellantis will cover 100 per cent of parts and labour costs for up to 10 years or 240,000 kilometres for eligible repairs carried out between 1 January 2023 and 30 June 2025.

Here are 10 used performance cars for under £60k we found this week

Advertisement This Viper RT/10 is the same one we tested in our American icon shoot-out, and what a glorious example it is. Those three-spoke alloys, side-exit exhausts, targa roof and lack of any door handles immediately channel retro vibes. Then there's the engine co-developed with Lamborghini: an 8.0-litre V10 producing 400bhp. Get your shifts right on the six-speed manual, and you'll hit 62mph in four-and-a-bit seconds. Advertisement - Page continues below Convertible LC500s cost quite a bit more than this week's budget, so you'll have to settle for a coupe. No bother, because this Sport Plus model has all of 471bhp and 398lb ft. Admittedly, a 10-speed gearbox is a bit much, but we doubt you'll care with the astonishing V8 bellow this little Lex creates. You might like Aston Martin Vanquish (first generation) Speaking of fiddly gearboxes, the first-gen Vanquish was notorious for it. But again, it can be forgiven for that noise, those looks and the sheer amount of style oozing from this gentleman's express. If you can get over the slightly dated technology and appalling rear legroom, here's a mint example of the Bond-approved V12. Advertisement - Page continues below It feels wrong to do a performance car list without a Prancing Horse, and this Ferrari 360 Spider ticks the box. Its first owner specced it superbly, opting for bronzed alloys, a metallic blue body, part-cream interior and lots of optional carbon inserts. There's a Capristo exhaust installed too, which sings to the tune of 400 Italian horses. While the Ferrari's V8 sounds like an orchestrated melody, this supercharged Jag's is more comparable to a rock ballad. It's a pre-facelift SVR, so the key figures are as follows: 567bhp, 516lb ft, 0-62mph in 3.7s and 195mph all in. There's AWD too. TVR Tuscan Speed Six (second generation) Despite having two fewer cylinders (six) and far less power (400bhp) than the SVR, this Tuscan is just two-tenths slower to 62mph, and matches its top speed. Throw a five-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive into the mix, and you've got the right conditions for fear. Audi R8 V10 Spyder (first generation) Unavoidable, given that the R8 was known as the budget supercar for over a decade. Here's one with a rare 'Teak Brown Metallic' body over the brightest interior we've seen in some time. It's got the same 5.2-litre V10 as you'll find in a Lamborghini Gallardo, with a useful 518bhp sent to all four corners thanks to quattro. Advertisement - Page continues below There's no shortage of choices if a 911 is what you're after. We'd opt for a 997 Turbo, and while a full-fat 'S' is out of budget, a standard variant like this still offers an immense amount for the money. The flat-six is capable of a 0-62mph run in 3.6s, which is mighty impressive considering this car is 15 years old. As a technical achievement, the 12C was a spectacular entry from McLaren's road car division. It's the fastest car on this list by some distance, hitting 62mph in 3.1s and pressing on to 205mph. Here's the cheapest one we could find right now, and yes, it's a fair bit over budget. But the 12C is probably the best all-round used performance car you can buy for £60k. Advertisement - Page continues below Wildcard: Ferrari Testarossa Quite simply a Gulf-liveried Testarossa with a Jaguar V12, a lightweight spaceframe chassis and a five-speed transaxle gearbox. It's a proper racing car for the road, and one that could be yours for exactly £35k. See more on Used cars

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 will bow out with this ‘Final Edition'

First Look But sadly, this 410bhp baby brute won't do its bowing out in the UK… Skip 8 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Mercedes-AMG is waving goodbye to its current-gen CLA 45 S with a 'Final Edition' encore, which gains various exterior and interior modifications for a bit more sugar and spice. It won't be coming to Britain, however. C'mon, Merc. Anyway, the package will be available for both the coupe and shooting brake body styles in the US of A, and includes 19in forged alloys, a large vinyl along the flanks and some neat little yellow accents. Advertisement - Page continues below You'll also get the option of an AMG aero package, which brings a dinky rear wing, a larger front splitter plus a revised front apron, and a blade diffuser out back. The exterior can then be sprayed in two finishes: 'Mountain Grey Magno' or 'Night Black Uni'. Pretty sure we had some of the latter while at university, too. The cabin gets even more yellow, with stitching along the leather and microfibre seats, the Nappa steering wheel, door panels and instrument cluster. It actually works pretty well with the red ambient lighting. You might like Otherwise, the Final Edition will be familiarly CLA: a pair of 10.25in screens gelled together, many 'buttons' on the steering wheel and those fancy air vents. We're still not bored of those. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot still sends 410bhp and 369lb ft of torque through an eight-speed DCT 'box. That allows for a 0-62mph sprint in 4.1s, on the way to a top speed of 168mph. The 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive can also split its torque, sending extra power to the rear axle for more dramatic sideways action. Advertisement - Page continues below Pricing is yet to be revealed, but we do know that the Final Edition will only be available until the end of 2025. That's when the current CLA is discontinued outright, and production of the new generation ramps up. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter.
