How Season 3 of ‘The White Lotus' could set a new record for Emmy acting nominations
Season 3, which comes to an end this Sunday on HBO, could end up beating the previous number of acting bids for both Season 1 (eight) and Season 2 (nine). Jennifer Coolidge won back-to-back Emmys for playing quirky resort guest Tanya McQuoid, while Murray Bartlett claimed gold for the first season as the Maui hotel manager.

The third installment, which focuses on wellness and spirituality in Thailand, boasts a whopping 17 series regulars as of the penultimate episode, which aired March 30. The actors can essentially be divided into four cliques: the Ratliff family (Jason Isaacs as Timothy, Parker Posey as Victoria, Patrick Schwarzenegger as Saxon, Sam Nivola as Lochlan, and Sarah Catherine Hook as Piper); the female best friends (Leslie Bibb as Kate, Carrie Coon as Laurie, and Michelle Monaghan as Jaclyn); hotel employees/acquaintances (Natasha Rothwell as Belinda, Lalisa Manobal as Mook, Lek Patravadi as Sritala, Tayme Thapthimthong as Gaitok, and Jon Gries as Gary/Greg); and those involved in a revenge storyline (Walton Goggins as Rick, Aimee Lou Wood as Chelsea, Sam Rockwell as Frank, and Scott Glenn as Jim).
HBO
That doesn't even count the recurring actors billed as guest stars, such as Nicholas Duvernay as Zion, Arnas Fedaravicius as Valentin, Christian Friedel as Fabian, Dom Hetrakul as Pornchai, and Charlotte Le Bon as Chloe. (Note that actors are only eligible for the guest categories at the Emmy Awards if they appear in fewer than 50 percent of the episodes.)
This year's group of acting contenders has been blowing up the TV buzz-meter on a weekly basis. First, there was the internet's obsession over Posey's North Carolina accent — "Tsunami! Buddhism! Piper, no!"
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Then, the brother characters played by Schwarzenegger and Nivola went viral for their sexual escapades while on an overnight trip. Rockwell also made headlines for his debut scene with Goggins, in which he opened about his desire to become an Asian woman.
Since The White Lotus considers itself to be a true acting ensemble, none of its main stars campaign in the lead categories at the Emmys. Instead, they all compete in the supporting races, where it's a true logjam. Usually there are eight nominees for the drama supporting categories, though last year, fewer shows aired within the eligibility period due to the strikes, so that number temporarily dropped to seven.
According to Gold Derby's latest Emmy odds, there are seven Season 3 actors who are virtual locks for nominations: Coon, Posey, Rothwell, and Wood in Best Drama Supporting Actress; and Goggins, Isaacs, and Schwarzenegger in Best Drama Supporting Actor. Beyond that, Bibb, Monaghan, Rockwell, and Nivola currently rank in the top 14 of their respective categories, meaning nominations are well within striking distance. If all 11 of those nominations come to fruition, that would mean a new acting record for the franchise. (The guest acting slots have yet to be added to our predictions center, but at the very least Glenn and Le Bon would likely be among the early favorites.) For those keeping score at home, another HBO series, Succession, holds the all-time Emmy record for acting nominations with 14 — a feat it accomplished twice. The White Lotus has that overall milestone in its sights.
Season 1's eight Emmy acting nominations in 2022:
Murray Bartlett as Armond — WINNER
Jennifer Coolidge as Tanya McQuoid — WINNER
Connie Britton as Nicole Mossbacher
Alexandra Daddario as Rachel Patton
Natasha Rothwell as Belinda
Sydney Sweeney as Olivia Mossbacher
Jake Lacy as Shane Patton
Steve Zahn as Mark Mossbacher
Season 2's nine Emmy acting nominations in 2023:
Jennifer Coolidge as Tanya McQuoid-Hunt — WINNER
Meghann Fahy as Daphne Sullivan
Sabrina Impacciatore as Valentina
Aubrey Plaza as Harper Spiller
Simona Tabasco as Lucia Greco
F. Murray Abraham as Bert Di Grasso
Michael Imperioli as Dominic Di Grasso
Theo James as Cameron Sullivan
Will Sharpe as Ethan Spiller
The first season, set in Hawaii, competed as a limited series at the Emmys and won 10 total trophies (program, supporting actor Bartlett, supporting actress Coolidge, directing, writing, casting, main title theme music, music composition, picture editing, and sound mixing). Because Season 2 included returning characters played by Coolidge and Gries, the show shifted to the drama races for its Italy cycle and won five more Emmys (supporting actress Coolidge, casting, hairstyling, music composition, and music supervision). Likewise, Season 3 contains returning characters played by Rothwell and Gries, so it's considered a drama at the upcoming 2025 Emmys.
The White Lotus is created, produced, written, and directed by Mike White. The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15 — see the full calendar.

Josh Hutcherson Is Pretty Obsessed With Dogs And Hopes You'll Adopt One
When Josh Hutcherson was 18, he fell in love with a pit bull puppy named Driver. The actor adopted the pittie from the nonprofit Angel City Pit Bulls and within a year, started acting in the first 'Hunger Games' movie. Driver, now 13, has been a constant companion as Hutcherson's career exploded. 'It's crazy going through so much of life together,' Hutcherson, 32, said. 'Since the day I met Driver, he was just the most happy, open, joyful, deep soul of a dog. He's just the absolute best. His eyes are just pools of knowledge that I'm trying to gleam something from.' Because Driver has always been friendly with other dogs, Hutcherson adopted another pittie named Manchi four years ago. Within a week the dogs were cuddling and became best friends. 'Somebody was fostering Manchi's whole litter because the litter got abandoned and they all had pneumonia and some didn't make it. I wanted to take them all, but I chose Manchi because he was the littlest runt and weirdest. I was like, 'This guy's got a good vibe,'' he said. 'Manchi is this very odd, kind of shy, but so sweet and loving boy. He has a 1,000-yard stare, which I absolutely love. Sometimes I'll just sit by the fireplace, and we'll just make eye contact and not look away for minutes on end.' Helping Clear The Shelters With his love of shelter dogs, Hutcherson felt it was a 'dream scenario' to partner with Hill's Pet Nutrition to visit adoptable pets yesterday at Pasadena Humane — the nonprofit shelter that took in over 1,500 pets displaced by January's Southern California wildfires — as part of NBCUniversal Local's Clear The Shelters campaign. Clear The Shelters aims to increase shelter adoptions and donations throughout August. 'The reason why I wanted to be a part of this campaign is there are so many amazing dogs and cats and critters at shelters all over the country that need homes,' he said. 'I know from my experience, I'm two for two and they're even better than I could ever have dreamt.' He loved meeting 'every single' dog and cat at Pasadena Humane. He bonded with a pit bull mix named Lula with 'ice blue eyes and great energy' and a possible Rottweiler mix named Finn. Big dogs linger longer than smaller dogs or cats in shelters — they stay nearly twice as long as they did in 2019 — and only 25% of people surveyed in the 2025 Hill's State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report said they will likely adopt a dog weighing over 55 pounds in the future. 'I think some people feel like if they don't have a big house, they can't have a big dog, and that's just oftentimes not the case,' he said. 'I know Great Danes, one of the largest breeds, don't actually need a lot of space. They're happy in small apartments.' His own big dogs get a walk every day but then are content lounging around and following him from room to room. 'They won't leave my side,' he said. 'I think big dogs are amazing. I've always had big dogs, from boxers to Labs to pit mixes, and every dog I've had has been 50-plus pounds and I just love them. There's something about their big bodies that when you're cuddling them, it's just this massive animal that you have this bond with that's so incredible.' Josh Hutcherson's Feline Connection Visiting Pasadena Humane also reminded Hutcherson of his love for cats. He grew up with cats named Paws, Walter Aloysuis Zimmerfloss the Third, and Jell-O. 'Jell-O was a big old girl,' he said with a grin. 'Her name was very appropriate.' At Pasadena Humane, he loved meeting kittens as well as a cat named Catnip with no boundaries. 'As soon as I held Catnip, she crawled up on my shoulder and perched on top of my shoulders. It was the cutest thing,' he said. 'It was great to reconnect with my feline side.' A History With Animals On And Off The Screen In addition to personal pets, Hutcherson enjoyed bonding with the canine actors on the set of 'Miracle Dogs,' his first movie, which he starred in as a 9-year-old. 'My entire life, every time I'm around dogs just makes me more in love with dogs. I've worked with dogs multiple times and they're so impressive. A trained movie dog is wildly impressive,' he said. 'My favorite things in the world: making movies and dogs. They should make more movies with adults and dogs, not just kids and dogs. I'm going to push for that genre.' Some of his favorite canine characters include Baxter in 'Anchorman' — 'That was a top-notch performance' — and the dog who starred in 'The Artist.' 'There are some great dog actors out there,' he said. Though Hutcherson believes his own dogs aren't cut out for the big screen, other shelter dogs are. Recently a shelter dog named Sparrow stole hearts with a cameo in 'Superman,' and Krypto the Superdog is based on the director's rescue dog, Ozu. As part of Clear The Shelters, potential adopters can search by ZIP code for nearby shelter pets at with filters for breed, size, gender and other preferences. People who aren't ready to permanently adopt a furry family member can consider fostering, volunteering or donating to help shelters nationwide, Hutcherson noted. 'If you can't adopt or you want to see how it feels, fostering is a great step,' he said. 'There's a lot of things you can do to be a part of the movement of giving some love to these animals.'

Anthony Mackie Jokes He's the 'White Dude Legend' After Multiple Co-Stars Earned Emmy and Oscar Nominations
Anthony Mackie reacted to being nominated for a guest actor in a comedy Emmy and joked that he has helped many of his former co-stars earn Emmy and Oscar nominations while working together. While appearing on the Wednesday episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host congratulated Mackie on getting two Emmy nominations. The Marvel star then shared how he learned about his nomination for his guest appearance on The Studio. 'I didn't know. I was at work,' he recalled. 'And I look over and everybody's like, 'Congratulations!' And I was like, 'Oh, what white dude got nominated?' 'Cause I'm the white dude legend when it comes to nominations and wins,' Mackie said before he listed off his past co-stars who have been nominated for Oscars and Emmys. 'I made Ryan Gosling famous. I made Jeremy Renner famous. I made Bryan Cranston famous,' he jokingly said. 'I made now Ron Howard famous. I'm like, if you want to get nominated, I'm the dude. You know what I mean?' Mackie and Gosling starred in 2006's Half Nelson and the latter earned a best actor nomination at the Oscars. He also worked with Renner in 2008's The Hurt Locker, which earned him an Oscar nomination, and Cranston in 2016's All the Way, which the Breaking Bad alum earned an Emmys nod for. Most recently, both Mackie and Howard appeared on Apple TV+'s The Studio in guest starring roles. Despite having worked in the entertainment industry since he was a child, the nomination is Howard's first acting nod. After Fallon joked that Mackie is the 'secret sauce' to help his co-stars get nominated, he responded, 'I am the secret sauce. I am the jelly in the donut, you know what I'm saying?' In addition to Mackie and Howard, fellow The Studio guest stars Cranston, Dave Franco and Martin Scorsese are also nominated for outstanding guest actor in a comedy category. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal rounds out the category for his role in The Bear. Fallon noted that the nominees are 'stacked,' which led Mackie to admit that he was fine not winning. 'So the way I look at it, I'm very honored and proud to be nominated,' he said. 'But the reality of it is, I'm excited to be in second place.' Mackie continued, 'Because you know it's Ron Howard, and it's Scorsese. So, one of them is going to take it, but they're going to take votes from the other person. So, I'm going to be in second.' The audience broke out into laughter before Fallon asked, 'You don't want to win this?' 'Oh man, I don't care about no winning. Who cares about … winning is being nominated against Scorsese and Ron Howard … because one of them is going to have to say, 'Damn, I lost to Anthony Mackie,'' he joked. 'They're thinking about me. They're shaking.' In addition to his nomination for The Studio, Mackie also scored a Daytime Emmy Awards nomination in the outstanding daytime personality (non-daily) category for Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast. Steve Buscemi Recalls Failed Audition for Barry Levinson's ‘Tin Men': 'There Was This Silence'
Steve Buscemi is known for many of his recognizable roles, but he was not able to secure a part in Barry Levinson's 1987 comedy Tin Men, the actor recalled on Wednesday's Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The host asked Buscemi if there were any roles he auditioned for that stung when he didn't secure them. I never knew, like, if I should wing it 'cause sometimes I'd be good if I went in the room and I didn't really prepare,' he said about his experience with auditions. 'And then the next time I'd do it, I would fail.' Buscemi then recalled his audition process for Levinson and said he knew he couldn't wing it. 'I studied the sides, the script and went in there and did my reading, did my audition and he looked at me and he went, 'That was really good, that's really good, Steve. All right, let's do it again,'' he said. 'He gave me a very specific note and I don't remember what that was.' The Wednesday actor explained that Levinson wanted him 'to add a different color to it or shading.' He continued, 'I went, 'OK.' And then I read it again, the exact same way I just did it.' 'There was this silence and we both just looked at each other,' Buscemi continued as the audience laughed. 'I think I even said, 'That was the same, wasn't it?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's OK, it's OK.' Needless to say, I did not get that part.' Another audition he recalled was with director Mike Nichols and casting director Juliet Taylor. Buscemi explained that he didn't want to audition because he already booked another job that had a conflict with the shooting schedule. However, his agent at the time encouraged him to go to the audition so he could meet Nichols and Taylor. 'I went in, I do the audition and they love it,' he said. 'They were laughing, they were like, 'That's great! Yeah, good.'' Following the positive responses from Nichols and Taylor, Buscemi asked when they were filming the project. He then told them that he wasn't available, and he was met with a memorable response. 'And again, this, like, silence,' he said. 'And I could see Juliet Taylor just looking at me going, 'What is wrong with you?'' Despite not securing some of the roles he auditioned for, Buscemi has been able to make a name for himself in both comedies and dramas. Some of his most notable movie roles include parts in Reservoir Dogs, Fargo and The Big Lebowski, while he also starred on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
