Why Is Karnataka Govt Hiding Fare Panel Report On Bengaluru Metro, Asks Tejasvi Surya

Even today, the Bengaluru Metro is the most expensive metro system in the country. Public transport should be made affordable, says Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya
As the Karnataka High Court (HC) continues hearing a petition seeking transparency in metro fare hikes and the delay in the launch of Bengaluru's Yellow Line, Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya has hit out at the state government and the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) saying they are 'in a war against public transport".
Speaking to News18 after the Karnataka HC heard his writ petition on transparency in the fare fixation report of the BMRCL, he stressed there was 'deliberate opacity" and 'callous indifference" to commuters.
Surya pointed out that the committee went on a multi-country tour, only to return and recommend a 130% hike in fares. 'As consumers of a public transport system — built and funded by public money — don't we have the right to know how fares are being fixed? Are we not living in a democracy? Does this report compromise national security? Will it help enemy nations if it is made public? If not, why the secrecy?"
Criticising the partial rollback in fares after public protests, calling it 'mathematical gymnastics" that offered no real relief to long-distance commuters. 'Even today, the Bengaluru Metro is the most expensive metro system in the country. Public transport should be made affordable, but instead we're being forced to fight for basic transparency. Citizens and even elected representatives are being pushed to approach the High Court for information that should be in the public domain. That tells you everything about the quality of governance."
The Karnataka HC also questioned, 'The state of affairs which is driving an elected MP coming to appeal for this?"
'This is a fight for transparency, for public transport, for commuter rights," said Surya. 'We live in a city that is choking with congestion. People are mentally harassed by traffic. What we need is denser, more reliable and affordable public transport. But instead, the government seems to be waging a war against public transport."
Surya also hit out at the inordinate delay in the commissioning of the Yellow Line, which has now dragged on for over four years. 'Deadlines come and go — now they're saying August 15. The civil work was completed over a year ago. This line has the potential to cater to 8 to 9 lakh people and take lakhs of private vehicles off the road. But BMRCL is in no hurry to launch it."
Blaming the agency for botching up the project, Surya said he had to step in personally in 2023 to get things back on track. 'I've visited the Titagarh rail factory four times, coordinated with Mitsubishi and other stakeholders — all of which is the BMRCL's job. Instead, like a court adjourning cases endlessly, the BMRCL keeps giving new deadlines every month. No deadline seems to have any sanctity. It's crazy."
'I have urged the BMRCL that the August 15 deadline should be met at any cost. The line has been ready for over a year," he said.
Asked what he plans to do next, the MP said, 'We've raised this issue in every forum. I've spoken with the Union Urban Affairs Minister, with the Metro Chairman. I will keep pushing until this line is operational. Bengaluru deserves better."

Karnataka high court declines to issue directions on dropping of Betta Halasuru Metro station in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court Wednesday declined to issue any direction regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the dropping of Betta Halasuru Cross Metro station along the Krishnarajapuram - Kempegowda International Airport route. The question of whether the station is to be constructed at a particular place is not amenable to judicial review under Article 226 of the Constitution of India. The decision on the manner in which a Metro line is to be constructed lies solely in the reserve of the concerned authority, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bhakru and Justice CM Joshi observed in their order. "We accordingly dispose of this petition by directing BMRCL to consider the representations filed by the petitioners," the bench further observed while disposing of the PIL filed by BG Nanjundappa and four others. "Metro rail is constructed mainly for providing a speedy and convenient travel facility to the general public and reducing traffic. By dropping the proposed station at Betta Halasuru, the authorities are putting to inconvenience the people of about 20 villages and about 2 lakh people every day. Students, working-class people, and businessmen will have to use their own vehicles as there will be no Metro stations for about 8km," the petitioners stated in their PIL.

Karnataka High Court asks BMRCL to consider residents' plea for metro station at Bettahalasur cross on airport line

The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) to consider representations given by the public for construction of a metro station at Bettahalasuru cross on the airport link line of Phase-2B metro project as was originally planned. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Joshi issued the direction while disposing of a PIL petition, filed by B.G. Nanjundappa and four others from Bettahalasur area. Not domain of court However, the bench made it clear that it cannot issue any specific direction on the issue of construction of the station as the issue does not come under the domain of the court. The petitioners had complained that the BMRCL in 2019 had planned a metro station at Bettahalasur cross, had acquired land for this purpose, and paid compensation to the land owners. However, the BMRCL dropped the plan of constructing station at Bettahalasur cross. On enquiry made through RTI, the petitioner came to know that the plan of station at Bettahalasur cross was dropped as a private company, Embassy Group, had backed out from sponsoring the station as was agreed earlier. In public interest However, the petitioners have said that withdrawal of the private company from sponsoring the station should not result in construction of a station as it would be responsibility of the BMRCL to construction the station in public interest. The petitioners have also pointed out that a station at Bettahalasur cross is essential as it is situated between Bagalur and Doddajala stations, which are situated around 4 km away from Bettahalasur cross on either side, as the BMRCL's proposal is to have a station for every 4 km.

Supreme Court asks YouTube channel to first approach High Court in ‘Dharmasthala burials' case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) declined to hear a challenge to an 'ex-parte' and 'sweeping gag order' passed by a Bengaluru civil court restraining media outlets from publishing any defamatory material against Harshendra Kumar D., brother of Dharmasthala pattadhikari D. Veerendra Heggade, in connection with the alleged burials in the temple town. Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, when the petition was mentioned orally for an early listing, advised advocate A. Velan, appearing for the YouTube channel, Third Eye, to first approach the Karnataka High Court. It argued that the civil court 'effectively imposed a sweeping gag order and mandatory content deletion on hundreds of media entities nationwide'. 'This order, secured through a calculated abuse of judicial process and material misrepresentation by the plaintiffs, directly obstructs a high-level State criminal investigation into allegations of mass burials and serious crimes linked to the influential Dharmasthala temple. It is a frontal assault on the freedom of speech and the Press (Article 19(1)(a)) and the foundational principles of natural justice and due process (Article 21),' the petition said. The Karnataka government has already constituted a Special Investigation Team to enquire into the allegations.
