How Clint Eastwood foreshadowed controversial Brokeback Mountain Oscars loss

Metro2 days ago

Brokeback Mountain's co-writer has revealed the moment she released the much-lauded gay cowboy drama wouldn't win the best picture Oscar in 2006.
Despite the accolades and praise it had garnered up to that point – including four Baftas and four Golden Globes – and going into the evening with eight nominations, the movie was destined to lose the night's top prize.
The 78th Academy Awards also became infamous as the film chosen instead was Crash, now often cited as one of the worst candidates to win best picture
In a new interview to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain's release, producer and co-writer Diana Ossana agreed that she felt her film should have won instead but insisted she 'hold[s] no grudge'.
Ossana also revealed she knew before the Oscars that Brokeback Mountain wouldn't triumph in that category after attending a nominees' party after Academy Awards voting had already closed – and learning a personally disappointing piece of news.
The event was held at the home of Paul Haggis, co-incidentally the director of Crash, and also attended by Clint Eastwood, who the previous year had enjoyed success at the Academy Awards with Million Dollar Baby.
As a fan of Unforgiven in particular, Ossana was particularly excited to meet Eastwood.
'Paul started walking me over and he goes, 'Diana, I have to tell you, he hasn't seen your movie.' And it was like somebody kicked me in the stomach,' she recalled while speaking to the New York Times. 'That's when I knew we would not win best picture.' More Trending
Brokeback Mountain did still go on to scoop best director, best adapted screenplay and best original score at the Oscars.
But Ossana, who co-wrote the picture with Larry McMurty, believes that homophobia contributed to the western's defeat in the main category.
'People want to deny that, but what else could it have been? We'd won everything up until then,' she added.
Metro has contacted a representative for Clint Eastwood for comment.

John Travolta reprises iconic Grease role 46 years after the original

A Grease comeback in 2025 was not on our bingo cards, but we are hopelessly devoted to his new look. John Travolta left fans speechless at the Hollywood Bowl last night by bringing back his classic Danny Zuko get-up. The signature slicked-back quiff and leather jacket were back on the stage for a surprise Grease sing-along gig. Travolta, now 71, appeared spontaneously on stage to roaring applause at the La La Land outdoor event celebrating the 1978 musical comedy. Surprising not only fans but also his former Grease co‑stars who were in attendance – the audience went wild when Travolta emerged as Danny. The audience wasn't the only ones in complete shock, Travolta kept his surprise show a secret from the Grease cast: Barry Pearl, Michael Tucci, Kelly Ward, Didi Conn and even director Randal Kleiser were not in the know. Travolta himself later confirmed on Instagram that 'no one knew' about the surprise appearance, not even his on‑screen pals. Once on stage, Travolta dropped into character, joking in true Zuko style: 'L.A., I thought you were going back to Australia? That's cool, that's cool, baby…' He went on to lead the cast into a heartwarming chorus of We Go Together before closing the unforgettable show with the line, 'Enjoy the show, we love you!' Travolta's return to the role echoes a similar reunion from 2019, when he and the late Olivia Newton‑John, who died in 2022, surprised fans at a Florida sing‑along, both clad in full Danny and Sandy gear. Fans adored the moment when Travolta picked up his high-quality Zuko wig. Travolta said at the time he found the 50s-style hairdo suited him better than his own bald look, and this year's Hollywood Bowl appearance gave the fans the nostalgia they were craving. The 2019 event also marked a reunion with Newton‑John, who cherished the time spent reliving their iconic Grease roles on stage together. Newton‑John later reflected that the energy was incredible, saying: 'That movie is still loved … the excitement from the people, it was amazing'. More Trending Her infamous leather jacket from the final scene of the 1970s classic was auctioned off, with all proceeds going to her cancer wellness foundation. As for Travolta, he proved last night that Zuko can still light up a summer night, just like he did in 1978. Whether the wig is rollers for Edna Turnblad or covered in gel for Zuko, the actor remains one of the best showmen of all time. And as the Hollywood Bowl event showed, with a quiff, a leather jacket and a wink, Travolta has very much still got it. Got a story? Huge Emmerdale exit as beloved character is ordered to move out

Things have been strained between Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) since Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) left the house in Emmerdale, and a violent attack is set to tip things over the edge. Paddy and Bear have butted heads since Bear left Eve playing with some dangerous sleeping pills, and Paddy saw his carelessness as a threat to Eve's life. They came to verbal blows again when Bear played the inconsiderate housemate by trying to fix his bike all over the house. While anyone on the outside looking in can see something is up with Bear, Paddy is simply growing more and more frustrated. They find common ground again and seem to be getting along, and when Paddy suffers a vicious dog attack while saving a sheep, Bear comes to his rescue and saves the day. The attack is bad; Paddy is mauled and needs surgery. Having fought off the dog, Bear gets his son to hospital and anxiously waits with Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) for news. Paddy pulls through, but instead of relief, Bear unleashes a torrent of abuse on his son and his son's character. Mandy makes him leave, but the damage is done. Bear's words wound him more than the dog's teeth, and once home and well enough, he grabs his vets' gun and heads off to Celia's farm and confronts her about her dog – which is something Bear tells him to do. But the confrontation goes about as well as Bear's post-surgery pep talk. Paddy spirals and his birthday is a non-event due to his low mood. He confronts Bear over his bad advice and the fallout is catastrophic. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? Paddy harshly berates Bear for his treatment of him and then he snaps – ordering Bear to move out for good. Their relationship is done. More Trending But with something clearly brewing with Bear, will fragile Paddy be left with the guilt of the way he's now treated his dad when whatever it is comes to light? Teasing the arrival of new character Celia, played by Jaye Griffiths, Dominic Brunt said: 'I don't think anybody's come across anyone like Celia before! She's brilliant. She's a true baddie. And in the same way that like classic baddies, like Kim Tate, for example, the way that they actually enjoy being a baddie, the reason they are a villain is because they enjoy being a villain, you know, not because they have any choice, but they enjoy it. And she's got that, you know, she really likes toying with people. View More » 'She's got nothing to lose. She's in her own space and time, and she's in charge, and you'll never get one past her.' Disney holds ‘crisis talks' after Jared Leto sexual misconduct report threatens to derail release of movie Tron: Ares

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DISNEY has found itself scrambling to organize the promotion of Jared Leto's new movie amid historic claims of sexual impropriety, an insider has exclusively told The U.S. Sun. Leto, 53, has been accused by nine women, including some who were teenagers at the time. Recalling the alleged experience at his house, she said, "I thought maybe this was just what adult men do." Leto's reps denied any wrongdoing, saying, "Their communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms La Rue later applied to work as his personal assistant." La Rue denied she ever applied for the job, according to AirMail. He is not being sued or charged with any crime, but the report has thrown a wrench in the works when it comes to promoting his latest films. The Oscar-winning actor has two big-budget films being released in the coming months at Disney and Amazon MGM, Tron: Ares and Masters of the Universe. Ahead of Tron's release in October, Disney is scheduled to host a panel at San Diego ComicCon at the end of July, The Wrap reported, although it's not known whether or not Leto will appear on it. "Jared wants it to be business as usual ahead of the release of his new movie, but Disney is nervous about the promotion of Tron," an insider exclusively told The U.S. Sun. "The accusations of sexual misconduct couldn't have come at a worse time. "The marketing team has been having crisis meetings ahead of its theatrical release in October. Jared Leto shows off bold change to his appearance at MTV VMAs - as fans think he looks just like Kanye West's ex "Disney is planning to host a panel at San Diego ComicCon to push Tron: Ares and Jared has made it known that he's happy to be on it. "He doesn't want to hide away having denied the allegations and not only is he the lead, he's one of the producers. "Talks are still ongoing about how to handle the situation, but he will likely take part in some capacity and hold his head high. "He is not being sued civilly and he isn't being charged with a crime, if he were I think things would be a lot different." Disney may still have to cut its losses on this one." An insider told The U.S. Sun Leto took to the stage to speak about Tron: Ares during CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas on April 3, 2025, just two months before the report was published by AirMail. One woman speaking to the outlet claimed his behavior "has been an open secret for a long time." The U.S. Sun's source added, "Disney may still have to cut its losses on this one but will still do what it can to promote the movie and create a buzz." Neither Disney nor a representative for Leto responded to a request for comment. San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 24 to 27. Tron is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 10. The movie also Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Jeff Bridges. And although a big-budget movie usually comes with TV and print interview slots for its lead star and a social media push, there has been no marketing since the initial trailer was released in April. Leto is also set to appear in Masters of the Universe, which is scheduled for release in June 2026, although he is not the lead character in the live-action feature film. The actor has been cast as Skeletor, the primary antagonist to Nicholas Galitzine's He-Man, according to reports. Leto is also the frontman of the rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars, which is on tour until the end of the summer. He has played major roles in several movies, including The Joker in Suicide Squad, and won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Dallas Buyers Club. 4 Fans got to see the trailer for Tron: Ares, which was screened at The Walt Disney Studios presentation during CinemaCon in Las Vegas Credit: Getty
